ASSEMBLE IN GOD’S NAME
THE GATHERING (8:30) MS. SARAH WOLF
(11:00) THE REVEREND MARGARET BURNETT
HANDBELL PEAL (11:00)
PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP
Whenever I groan within myself and think how hard it is to keep writing
about love in these times of tension and strife, which may at any moment
become for us all a time of terror, I think to myself, “What else is the
world interested in?” What else do we all want, each one of us, except to
love and be loved, in our families, in our work, in all our relationships?
God is love. Love casts out fear. Even the most ardent revolutionist,
seeking to change the world, to overturn tables of the money changers, is
trying to make a world where it is easier for people to love, to stand in that
relationship to each other. ... The keenness and intensity of love brings
with it suffering, of course, but joy too, because it is a foretaste of heaven.

Lux aeterna Luceat eis, Domine. (Perpetual light shine upon them, Lord.)
Turn to me and be gracious for my heart is in distress.
O God, my God Why hast Thou forsaken me?
My tears linger at night but joy comes in the morning light.
Lord, in your infinite mercy grant them rest forevermore.

This is the day that the Lord has made,
Let us rejoice and be glad in it!
SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY

5TH SUNDAY IN LENT; MARCH 18, 2018

*PROCESSIONAL HYMN NO. 475
“COME, THOU FOUNT OF EVERY BLESSING” NETTLETON
*CALL TO CONFESSION
*PRAYER OF CONFESSION
When we are confused, and harden our hearts,
forgive us we pray.
When we are afraid, and immobilized by fear,
forgive us we pray.
When we are divided, and sort ourselves into like minded groups,
forgive us we pray.
In Jesus Christ, we seek the courage that comes with forgiveness
and calls us to serve.
In Jesus Christ, we pray to be bold and brave, forgiven and
forgiving. Help us, Lord.
As only you can, create in us clean hearts, O God.
And put a new and right spirit within us.
KYRIE
(silent prayer and meditation)
Amen.
*ASSURANCE OF PARDON
*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE
Wri en for Pentecost by a
Brish Bapst pastor, this hymn
text is full of biblical terms like
“Ebenezer” (1 Samuel 7:12),
Hebrew for “a stone of help” set
up to give thanks for God’s
assistance. The tune name
honors hymnal compiler Asahel
Ne leton, who probably did not
compose it.
In the presence of a holy God,
we become aware of the ways
we fall short of God’s best
hopes for us, and the ways we
have hurt others. We turn to
God in prayer, asking for
forgiveness.
We express gratude that
through God’s grace and
Christ’s giving of himself on the
cross we are forgiven and
restored to God and
one another.
We sing in thanksgiving for the
gi5s of forgiveness
and new life.
.
*PASSING THE PEACE
The peace of Christ be with you.

BAPTISM HYMN
“CHILD OF BLESSING, CHILD OF PROMISE” (verses 1 & 4)
Child of blessing, child of promise, Child of God, your loving Parent,
Baptized with the Spirit’s sign, Learn to listen for God’s call.
With this water God has sealed you Grow to laugh and sing and worship,
Unto love and grace divine. Trust and love God more than all.
BAPTISM PRAYER
The Passing of the Peace is one
of the most ancient
responses in worship. Having
received Christ’s peace,
we pass it on.
We invite children to come to
the front at this me.
Each week children bring
quarters to put in educaon
scks, so that young girls
around the world might have
the opportunity for an
educaon. Just $275 (1,100
quarters) provides scholarship,
supplies, and empowerment for
a young girl. As our children
come forward for the Time with
the Younger Church, please
pass them quarters to share.
The children lead the
congregaon in The Lord’s
Prayer using “Forgive us our
debts as we forgive
our debtors.”
Following the Time with the
Younger Church, PK and JK
children (three and four-year-
olds) may go to Children’s
Church Connued (C3). Parents,
please take your children out to
the hallway by the T.K. Young
Room and sign them in. Helpers
will escort them to the library.
Children two years old or
younger may go to the nursery
(Conference Room).
C3 is in the library for PK and JK
children. Children in senior
kindergarten and older are
welcome to come up for the
Time with the Younger Church,
then stay in the sanctuary for
the enrety of the worship
service.
Before we can know God, God
knows us. Bapsm, one of the
two sacraments of the
Presbyterian Church (USA), is in
response to the grace of God,
who calls us to be the people of
God. We welcome children and
adults into the fellowship of
faith. Parents, the
congregaon, and children of
the church make promises to
guide, nurture and love the
bapzed person
.
“Come Inside” was
commissioned by Idlewild
Church in memory of Margaret
Montgomery, mother of Steve
Montgomery. It is based upon
the biblical emphasis on
hospitality that, when Abraham
and Sarah welcomed strangers,
they turned out to be angels. It
also reminds us of the vision of
Idlewild, that “all who enter
find a home.”
With its ballad-like repeons
before and a5er each stanza’s
central narrave lines, this
meditave hymn text needs
performance in order to be
effecve. Its haunng melody
proves the means of convincing
us that the only adequate
response to “wondrous love” is
to “sing on.”
The sermon is a reflecon on
the day’s scriptures, suggesng
implicaons for our faith
and life.

“After Jesus had said this, he departed and hid from them.”
We bring to God our
celebraons and cares, praying
for the world, the church and
those close to us.
Doxology literally means
“words of glory.” Doxologies
have long been used by Jews
and Chrisans to praise God.
Here we honor and thank God
“from whom all blessings flow.”
The invitaon to the Lord’s
Supper is extended to all who
desire to follow Christ,
remembering that access to the
communion table is not a right
conferred upon the worthy, but
a privilege given to the
undeserving who come in faith,
repentance, and love. Even one
who has doubts or whose trust
is wavering is invited to the
table in order to be assured of
God’s love and grace in
Christ Jesus.

One Great Hour of Sharing is a global and interdenomina onal
Chris an mission to empower, provide water, supply food, and
give relief from disasters. In Isaiah 58, God issues a call and a
challenge—to love one another more deeply by sharing what
we have with those in need. All around the world, children are
collec ng and dona ng coins by filling a “fish” bank. Children
in PK-5th grade are encouraged to pick up fish banks in their
Sunday School classrooms to fill with coins for One Great Hour
of Sharing. The fish banks are to be returned to the church on
Easter Sunday, April 1, in baskets outside of the sanctuary
doors. The rest of the congrega on is invited to join our
children in this cause by leaving an offering in the offering plate
specifying that it is for One Great Hour of Sharing, or by
dona ng online at hHp://specialofferings.pcusa.org/oghs.html.
Service Opportunity: Idlewild par cipates in a backpack
program with Mid-South Food Bank in order to fill backpacks
with meals and snacks for children in need at Brewster
Elementary. We would like to encourage parents to have their
children do extra chores around the house to earn money to
buy the following type of snacks:
-peanut buHer crackers
-fruit snacks
-granola bars
-Goldfish
-any other type of snack that your child enjoys
Snacks must be in individual packages and can be dropped off
at the church no later than April 8. They can be placed outside
of Caitlin’s office, located in the Chris an Forma on Suite (next
to the Strock Room). We hope that you will find this to be a
meaningful experience for your children, and a me for you to
talk at home about how we can help those in our great city
who are in need.
Monthly Fellowship Opportuni?es: Fellowship gatherings are
held most every month for both SK-5th grade families and JK
and under families. There is no agenda for these gatherings
other than to enjoy each other’s company and grow in
community through the challenge and joy of raising children.
Fellowship for SK-5th Grade Families: Saturday, March 24:
Hosted by Jenna and Jeremy Sykes from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. at
487 Wolf View Cove, Cordova 38018. Older and younger

will even be a small peRng zoo.) This event is for families with
children JK and under, but older siblings are welcome. Please
RSVP to Caitlin by March 18, and bring a basket. Many thanks
to Presbyterian Women for helping organize this event!
Children’s Leadership in Worship: As a church that strives to
have an intergenera onal approach to ministry, we believe that
children’s par cipa on in worship is vital to the health of our
congrega on, and helps tremendously in the way of giving
children a sense of purpose and belonging. If your child would
like to be a bulle n greeter or an usher for the 11:00 service,
please contact Caitlin.
First Sunday Bulle?n Greeters: Children in SK-5th grade are
given the opportunity every first Sunday of the month to help
pass out bulle ns prior to the beginning of the worship service.
Third Sunday Ushering: Children in 3rd-5th grade are given the
opportunity every third Sunday to usher during worship. Today
Louise and Eliza Lawhead are helping with this responsibility
during the 11:00 service. We are so thankful for the ways
children lead us in worship!

OUTREACH MINISTRY
Unless otherwise noted, contact Sara Dorrien-Christians, 726-4681 ext. 42 or
Outreach opportuni?es abound as we seek to reflect Christ’s
love in Memphis and beyond. Volunteers worship and enjoy a
hot meal with many who are homeless in our community at
MTAM every Thursday evening; tutors assist students with
reading and math at Idlewild Elementary School; helpers stuff
backpacks with weekend meals for students at Brewster;
gardeners work with neighborhood children to tend the
McMerton Gardens in Binghampton; mission leaders work with
partners in Ghana and Cuba to install and sustain clean water
systems and learn about one another; and a hospitality team
offers compassionate care to those seeking assistance and
prayer on Sunday morning. And this is just a sampling!
These ministries are sustained by those who present the
offering of their hearts and me. If you feel called to join in, or
are simply curious and want to learn more, don’t hesitate to
reach out. We’d love to plug you in somewhere or discern

These listening sessions will collect input from our members

want in an Execu ve?” You will be receiving details about
these listening sessions soon. If anyone is unable to aHend
one of the listening sessions, a survey link will be posted on
the Presbytery’s website.
The Execu ve Presbyter posi on is provided to nurture and
guide us in our witness, worship, and service. The specific
tasks for the Execu ve Presbyter posi on, as specified in
the Presbytery’s Manual of Administra ve Opera on, are

WELCOME TO IDLEWILD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
Whether you are visi ng for the first me, or are a
long me member, we are blessed to have you with us.
You will no ce that our vision statement begins and ends
with “Idlewild Presbyterian Church is a community in
which....all who enter might find a home.”
We take these words seriously. We strive to be a
community as diverse and hospitable as God’s kingdom.
We don’t all look or act alike; God knows we don’t all
think alike. We don’t all read the Bible the same way. We
bring different ques ons, and we carry different burdens.
But every Sunday, we worship together as one.
In this grand old church, we do Sunday morning in some
preHy tradi onal (very Presbyterian!) ways. We study the
teachings and the ac ons of Jesus. We sing many of the
same hymns our grandparents sang. Yes, in our preaching
and our prayers, (and many of our newer hymns!) we
wrestle with the challenges of the modern world. I hope
your heart will hear something personal and relevant this
morning—a word of comfort, a spur to ac on, a call to a
deeper rela onship with God.
A=er the 8:30 service, join us for Sunday School. There are lots
of op ons. A=er the 11:00 service, s ck around. Come to the
fellowship hall for refreshments in the T.K. Young Room.
Introduce yourself to one of our clergy.
There are tons of opportuni es here to feed your soul and
expand your spirit. Try one out. You never know—you just
might be home!
Joyfully,
Pastor Steve Montgomery
