CONFIRMATION SUNDAY

7TH SUNDAY OF EASTER; MAY 8, 2016

8:30 & 11:00 A.M.

*CALL TO CONFESSION

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Creator God, by your design we are whole people, yet we deny this gift

of wholeness when

we have been willing to be entertained but not changed;

We have allowed our insights to harden into clichés;

We have seen our youth as “the future of the church,”

but not as valuable members of the church today;

We have called on you only to hear the sound of our own voices;

Forgiving God, who makes community from the raw materials

of our lives, teach us the humility to learn from those who know

a true rejoicing.

Restore to us wholeness through the Oneness we have in your Son,

our risen Savior, Christ Jesus.

(period of silent prayer and meditation)

Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE

*PASSING THE PEACE

The peace of Christ be with you.

And also with you!

In the presence of a holy God,

we become aware of the ways

we fall short of God’s best

hopes for us, and the ways we

have hurt others. We turn to

God in prayer, asking

forgiveness.

We express gratude that

through God’s grace and

Christ’s giving of himself on the

cross we are forgiven and

restored to God and

one another.

We sing in thanks for the gi, of

forgiveness and new life.

The Passing of the Peace is one

of the most ancient

responses in worship. Having

received Christ’s peace,

we pass it on.

PROCLAIM GOD’S WORD

GATHERING HYMN (11:00) “ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA! GIVE THANKS”

Refrain: Alleluia, alleluia!

Give thanks to the risen Lord.

Alleluia, alleluia!

Give praise to his name.

Jesus is Lord of all the earth.

He is the King of creation. (Refrain)

GOSPEL LESSON JOHN 17:20-26 (PAGE 111, NT, PEW BIBLE)

This is the Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

SERMON JESUS’ FINAL PRAYER DR. MONTGOMERY

We invite young children to

come to the front at this me.

The children lead the

congregaon in The Lord’s

Prayer (using “Forgive us our

debts as we forgive

our debtors”).

Following the Children’s Time,

three-year-olds through senior

kindergartners may go to C3.

Parents, please take your

children out to the hallway, by

the T.K. Young Room, and sign

them in. Helpers will escort

them to Room 203W in the

Jones Building. If you have

babies, toddlers or two-year-

olds, you will take them to the

nursery area (2nd floor east,

Jones Building).

Before we can know God, God

knows us. Baptism, one of the

two sacraments of the

Presbyterian Church (USA), is in

response to the grace of God,

who calls us to be the people of

God. We welcome children and

adults into the fellowship of

faith. Parents, the

congregation, and children of

the church make promises to

guide, nurture and love the

baptized person.

A parish priest at St. Brendan’s

on the South Side of Chicago

was very involved in the local

1960s, Civil Rights movement

and needed something for his

youth choir to sing at

ecumenical, interracial events.

Finding nothing, he wrote “We

Are One in the Spirit” in a

single day.

The sermon is a reflecon on

the day’s scriptures, suggesng

implicaons for our faith

and life.

.

Our Confirmaon Ministry

serves ninth graders who

explore bapsmal promises and

discern their faith in Jesus Christ

by studying the Trinity in

scripture, fellowship,

and prayer.

Throughout the spring, weekly

lessons were built on Gardner’s

theory of mulple intelligences.

The ministry began at the font,

with a blessing offered between

a confirmand and mentor in the

hope that the relaonal nature

of a bapzed life would be

emphasized.

While a%ending a service at

Temple Israel, the youth were

challenged by Rabbi Greenstein

to “know who and whose” they

were as God’s beloved. The

apex of the process was an

overnight retreat, when

statements of faith were

wri%en and acvies shared

with mentors. A profound

moment happened as mentors

shared with confirmands a

response to the prompt, “These

are the five fundamentals by

which I live my life …”

Please take me to study the

string art crosses, made by the

confirmands, on the stage in

the T.K. Young Room today.

Each journey and life of faith is

woven together differently, yet

grounded in the saving life,

death and resurrecon of Jesus

Christ. The cross is a symbol

that points us to God’s mystery

and saving love. Inscribed on

the back of these string art

crosses are hopes and

expectaons for a life of faith

wri%en by parents, mentors,

and confirmands.

Our gratude goes to the

confirmands, mentors, teaching

team and families who take this

commitment seriously.

Confirmand Wendell Henson

will be confirmed at

a later date.

STATEMENT OF CONFIRMATION MINISTRY MS. APPLE

MR. GIB WILSON

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH THE CONFIRMATION CLASS OF 2016

Who is God?

Where does God come from?

Is there only one God?

Is God even real?

It is difficult to give ourselves up to One we have never seen.

Jesus is extraordinary.

He died on a cross and three days later he rose from the dead.

Jesus listens to us.

He forgives us and performs miracles.

Jesus leads us to be strong and courageous.

When we slow down and search with our eyes and hearts,

even though we have questions, we can have faith

and put our trust in God.

God is peace, calm, and security.

God, the Creator, is somehow able to be by our sides, all the time.

God is generous, merciful, and divine.

God, the Helper, connects with everyone, every day.

God comforts, guides, and encourages us.

God trusted people to follow Jesus and to have faith in God's plan.

God is many things, and we are God’s children.

Sometimes, when everything seems perfect, God shifts our lives

in unimaginable ways.

God sends us the Advocate.

The Holy Spirit is a representation of hope, a first spark of pure life.

The Holy Spirit gives to us the capacity for kindness, understanding,

and cooperation.

The Holy Spirit helps us to notice the details and to love when it is hard.

The Holy Spirit helps us to be surrounded by God's love,

These quesons mirror those

asked at bapsm.

We bring to God our

celebraons and cares, praying

for the world, the church and

those close to us.

The Holy Spirit gives us the knowledge that God is with us always.

The Holy Spirit sends us to share God's peace with all.

In faith, we trust in one triune God. Amen.

CONFIRMATION QUESTIONS MR. FRANK KELLY, MS. LAURA RUSSELL,

& MS. MARY TAYLOE

Do you profess your faith in Jesus Christ?

Confirmands: I do, with God’s help.

Do you renounce evil, and affirm your reliance on God’s grace?

Confirmands: I do, with God’s help.

As you continue along your journey of faith, will you do your best to

participate actively and responsibly in the worship and mission of Jesus

Christ, being a faithful member of his church? Will you use your God-

given gifts to make a difference in God’s world?

Confirmands: I will, with God’s help.

GIFT OF THE STOLES MS. CATHERINE BERGER

BLESSING MS. BURNETT & DR. MONTGOMERY

May the Lord bless you and keep you. Remember you are God’s beloved.

May the Lord make His face to shine upon you.

May the Lord give you comfort and peace. Remember you are Christ’s own.

May the Lord challenge and convict you, guard and guide you

through the Power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

“CHILD OF BLESSING, CHILD OF PROMISE” (verses 2 & 3)

Child of love, our love’s expression, Child of joy, our dearest treasure,

love’s creation, loved indeed! God’s you are, from God you came.

Fresh from God, refresh our spirits; Back to God we humbly give you:

into joy and laughter lead. Live as one who bears Christ’s name.

Larry King (not, that Larry

King!) was Organist and

Director of Music at Trinity

Church, Wall Street in New York

City for 21 years. Trinity has one

of the finest professional choirs

in the country, yet Larry chose

to delegate the directorship of

this world-class ensemble to his

associate so that he could

devote himself to conducng

Trinity’s volunteer family choir,

a community which he loved.

It is for the family choir that he

wrote this seJng of

1 John 3:17-23, with its tender

message to love one another.

Doxology literally means

“words of glory.” Doxologies

have long been used by Jews

and Chrisans to praise God.

Here we honor and thank God

“from whom all blessings flow.”

The invitaon to the Lord’s

Supper is extended to all who

desire to follow Christ,

remembering that access to the

communion table is not a right

conferred upon the worthy, but

a privilege given to the

undeserving who come in faith,

repentance, and love. Even one

who has doubts or whose trust

is wavering is invited to the

table in order to be assured of

God’s love and grace in

Christ Jesus.

Based on Christ’s

great commission

(Ma%hew 28:19–20), this text

was wri%en for a convocaon

of Emmanuel College in

Toronto, the largest theological

school of the United Church of

Canada, a denominaon

formed by the union of

Methodists, Congregaonalists,

and Presbyterians.

(11:00) “LET US LOVE IN DEED AND TRUTH” LARRY KING (1932 – 1990)

If anyone has the world’s goods, and sees a neighbor in need, yet closes the heart against

him, how does God’s love abide in him? Let us not love in word or speech, but in deed and

in truth: By this we shall know that we are of the truth: We have confidence before our

God, and we receive from God whatever we ask, because we keep the commandments, and

do what pleases God. And this is that commandment, that we should believe in God’s Son,

Jesus Christ, and love one another. –I John 3:17–23
