This year Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on February 14. When I first noticed that Ash Wednesday and Lent begins on Valentines Day I thought that was kind of unfortunate from the standpoint that we set aside that day to celebrate love. But upon further reflection what greater way to celebrate love than to begin the season that focuses on the greatest love that was ever dis- played in the course of human history. In fact, while we often focus on the love between a husband and wife, St. Paul reminds us that this expression of love reflects the great love of Christ for His bride the Church. So I do hope that you will make Ash Wednesday worship a part of your Valentines Day celebration too. We will of course be serving a meal prior to our worship, so you can bring your sweetheart to dinner at church that night and then celebrate the great love expressed for all of us as we begin our Lenten Journey. (And if you want to enjoy another dinner, dont forget that our LLL group will be having a Valentines Dinner on the 18 th . You can find more information elsewhere in this newsletter and in the Tidings and there is a sign-up sheet at the church.) Our Lenten focus this year will be Return from Exile. The land of exile from which we begin our journey is the wilderness of sin and death. Sin came into the world when our first parents were un- faithful and disobedient, eating fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Adam and Eve sinned, and we have inherited from them not only the sin itself, but also the result of that sin— separation from our Lord and God. From the first sin in the first garden, we have been exiled into the wilderness where we have wandered without any ability to find our way out. This is the beginning of our journey: exile. But every journey also has a destination, an ending point. Our return from exile brings us into the promised land. Our relationship with our God is re- stored by Christs sacrifice. Our destination, then, is the perfect place, the new garden, the courts of heaven—the ultimate destination which was established for us by His death and resurrection. There is great joy in the journey as we see where our returning brings us; but there is also a som- ber attitude when we consider what Christ faced on account of our sin. Servant Thoughts It’s hard to believe that we will begin the season of Lent in just a few short

weeks. This year Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on February 14. When I

first noticed that Ash Wednesday and Lent begins on Valentine’s Day I thought

that was kind of unfortunate from the standpoint that we set aside that day to

celebrate love. But upon further reflection what greater way to celebrate love

than to begin the season that focuses on the greatest love that was ever dis-

played in the course of human history. In fact, while we often focus on the love

between a husband and wife, St. Paul reminds us that this expression of love

reflects the great love of Christ for His bride the Church. So I do hope that you

will make Ash Wednesday worship a part of your Valentine’s Day celebration too. We will of course

be serving a meal prior to our worship, so you can bring your sweetheart to dinner at church that

night and then celebrate the great love expressed for all of us as we begin our Lenten Journey.

(And if you want to enjoy another dinner, don’t forget that our LLL group will be having a Valentine’s

Dinner on the 18th. You can find more information elsewhere in this newsletter and in the Tidings

and there is a sign-up sheet at the church.)

Our Lenten focus this year will be Return from Exile. The land of exile from which we begin our

journey is the wilderness of sin and death. Sin came into the world when our first parents were un-

faithful and disobedient, eating fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Adam and Eve

sinned, and we have inherited from them not only the sin itself, but also the result of that sin—

separation from our Lord and God. From the first sin in the first garden, we have been exiled into

the wilderness where we have wandered without any ability to find our way out.

This is the beginning of our journey: exile. But every journey also has a destination, an ending

point. Our return from exile brings us into the promised land. Our relationship with our God is re-

stored by Christ’s sacrifice. Our destination, then, is the perfect place, the new garden, the courts of

heaven—the ultimate destination which was established for us by His death and resurrection.

There is great joy in the journey as we see where our returning brings us; but there is also a som-

ber attitude when we consider what Christ faced on account of our sin.

Dear Christian Friends,

Sitting here in my home office this morning and looking out of the window makes me feel thankful that I am

no longer a practicing veterinarian. Watching the wind blow the snow around brings back many memories

when we would be in some cold barn delivering a calf or performing some other obstetrical procedure un-

der what would not be considered the best of circumstances. Then the thought occurs to me that even

though I am here in my comfy office doesn’t mean that there are not many other veterinarians and ranch-

ers who are weathering this storm out there in the cold. Have you ever, when you sat down to that deli-

cious piece of beef, thought about personally thanking those individuals for what they do to provide you

with that meal?

Asking that questions leads to another question. When was the last time you thanked someone in our

congregation for doing what they do to keep our congregation functioning in an orderly and worshipful

fashion? On numerous occasions, St. Paul encouraged congregations to work together to build up the

body of Christ. Each one has his or her individual part to do to further the kingdom. Even though you may

not consider encouragement a big deal, to the one who is doing some obscure task, a thank you and a bit

of praise means a lot and provides the fuel to continue.

Sometimes I think we hide behind that old adage, “My mother always said, ‘If you can’t say something

nice, don’t say anything at all’”. If someone is doing some act of service, you shouldn’t have to search for

something nice to say. A sincere “thank you” is never a bad thing to say. In the days ahead, let’s all make

it our priority to go out of our way to encourage our fellow Christians as we walk toward our Lord and Sav-

ior. It is Him that we need to thank the most but we must remember that it is also Him that places each of

us in the positions of service that we hold. To Him be all the glory.

Blessings in Jesus,

Women's Wednesday Night Bible Study Failure, rejection, sickness, losing a loved one, being alone—the fears we carry are many and heavy. Fear can be a tyrant, a bully we can't hide from. It can paralyze our spirit, damage our relationships, and hinder our faith. When we're struck with fear, where do we turn? Can God really be trusted? Together, we will spend five heartfelt sessions with speaker and author Trillia Newbell as we explore common fears and how those fears impact our relationships, self-esteem, peace of mind, and walk with God. We will walk through Scriptures that show God's love and strength when we are afraid and His faithfulness in times of trouble. Whatever your fear, you will realize you are not alone, nor are you without hope. You have the One who can calm your fears, grow your faith, and give the peace your heart craves.
