Blogs are web-based sites that are normally created by an individual with a personal blog

or who works for a company or organization and is hired to contribute to their blog about their

products or services. There are many advantages and benefits to blogging as a means of

    communication.

Blogging allows individuals and/or businesses to build their brand(s) in a more personal

way with consumers. It allows you to establish a difference between yourself and your

competitors in a way that is more direct, clear and concise to your target customers. Blogging

allows for the development of personal relationships that are more personal rather than all

business. Additionally, it provides a platform for two-way communication with your customer-

base who can interact with you through your blog. As a result of the ability to build a better

rapport with your customers, they will become more loyal to your brand.

Another benefit of blogging for communication is to generate traffic to you or your

business web page. If written by a skilled and creative blogger or writer using powerful

keyword, the blog can really draw more attention to your site. Blogging can also establish

credibility when expertise is shared. The sharing of information and ideas can and will help build

credibility, which will give you an edge over the competition. For example, if youre blogging

about a specific product and are able to establish yourself as an authoritarian who has earned the

right to speak knowledgably on the subject matter, people will trust your recommendation and

will likely return to your blog in the future. Additionally, blogging can help expand your

customer base by reaching customers through the sharing of your regular customers. People who

would not have normally seen your blog or information posted to a website may now receive

your information when shared. An additional benefit to extending your reach through sharing

also increases the likelihood that those new readers will sign up or subscribe to your blog, which

in turn could grow your email database.

The great thing about blogging is that an individual or company can add their own

personality to it where it doesnt have to be so direct and impersonal like many websites are.

Another great benefit of blogging is the turnaround time for feedback on service, products or

simply your writing. Because blogging is a two-way communication between you and your

readers, you can get immediate feedback on something that youre either working on or an idea.

If youre considering a new product or service, you could first blogabout it and ask your readers

for their opinion before committing to anything 100%. If you do not receive favorable feedback

from your audience, perhaps you should hold off on the idea until it is more developed. The

same two-way communication that allows for feedback also gives you an opportunity to learn

more about your audience. Listening is a significant of blobbing because if your audience does

not feel that you are interested or responsive to them, it could affect your credibility.

Blogging can increase your influence within your industry or several industries. There are

individuals who blog for a living and can speak knowledgably about different products and

services. Their influence can increase their income as a result of their increased influenced.

Many companies pay bloggers to write about their products and/or services or give them free

product in exchange for their blog about the company. Additionally, advertisers pay bloggers

who have a large audience. Some companies also have internal blogs that can only be accessed

by their employees where they are encouraged to share their ideas and provide feedback on

products, services, and even employee relations. The blog serves as a forum for employees to

voice their opinions and/or concerns and allows leadership to assess some of the things that their

employees have shared, in an effort to make improvements or changes within the company.

Many blogs are also monitored by crisis management professionals in an effort to try to

prevent or minimize crisis level situations from the public. When bloggers write about a

particular service or product, it allows an organization to see not just what the blogger has to say,

but what the bloggers audience has to say about their experience. This can afford them the

opportunity to address concerns before they become major problems. Therefore, they regularly

troll blogs to maintain a handle on things concerning their brand.

Blogging is a very inexpensive way to communicate with your customers or general

public. Many people who blog do not actually have a website and therefore, do not have the

expense of the upkeep and maintenance of a website. Managing a website can be very time

consuming as well. The time one spends managing a site can be better spent writing and staying

in touch with your audience. There are many sites that offer free blog hosting like

www.blogger.comand www.WordPress.com. The free sites also offer premium services and

    upgrades for a minimal cost.

Blogging is also a great way to get press and media. Journalists often check blogs to find

trending and interesting articles from bloggers they might be interested in interviewing for a

    journal or article.

From a personal perspective, many people also use personal blogging as an outlet to

publicly express their feelings and emotions. Studies have shown that blogging helps writers in a

psychosocial manner through their communication with other people (Baker). It is considered

therapeutic to many who share their thoughts with their audience. Blogs serve as somewhat of a

diary or journal for people who wish to express themselves and may not have other outlets to

    share their true sentiments.

Blogs have also become very popular in education. Teachers have started using blogs to

allow their young grammar school aged students to communicate with other students across the

world by using videos, pictures, and podcasts. Blogging is used as a tool to encourage and

motivate students to become better writers by improving their spelling, punctuation and keeping

their thoughts focused since they know other people will be reading them. The students are

engaged because theyre learning about other countries and communicating with the people who

    live there.

Many writers create blogs for fun or as a hobby, which normally depends on their

interest. There are many blogs that began as just a hobby, which developed and grew into a

business. As a blog draws more attention and their audience grows, some blogs attract the

attention of organizations who are interested in ad placement on their blogs. Obviously if a

company is interested in placing an ad on your blog, this generates income for the blogger.

There are many reasons why people and organizations blog in an effort to communicate

information to a large number of people in a short period of time for a minimal cost. The key to a

great blog is consistency and to be forthcoming with your audience to maintain a good reputation

and credibility in the industry in which you blog.
