(an excerpt from the sermon Rev. Phil Butin preached on February 11, the Sunday of the ice storm)

The theme of our winter and spring sermon series is “Reaching Out with the Love of Jesus.” God’s challenge for us in today’s scripture passage from Mark 5:21-43 is to reinterpret the interruptions in our lives as opportunities to do just that. To reach out and meet others where they are with the same love that Jesus showed during his earthly ministry.

• With the stranger standing at the corner asking for food. • With the co-worker who comes in your office right when you’re working under a

deadline and needs to talk about a loved one who was just diagnosed with cancer. • With the friend at school who gets hurt on the playground and needs you to help them

stand up and walk back into the class. • With that phone call that comes when you’re right in the middle of something you feel

is really important—but you know from your caller ID that the caller needs you. To offer peace in the midst of anxiety. To offer prayer in the midst of grief or sickness. To offer grace in the midst of guilt. To offer strength in the midst of weakness.

“The great thing, if one can,” C. S. Lewis said, “is to stop regarding all the unpleasant things as interruptions of one's 'own,' or 'real' life. The truth is of course that what one calls the interruptions are precisely one's real life -- the life God is sending one day. Henri Nouwen reflects the same challenge in different words: “My whole life I have been complaining that my work was constantly interrupted, until I discovered that my interruptions were my work.”

When I began my ministry, interruptions were a huge annoyance to me. But somewhere along the way, I came to see that very often, the real ministry happens not in accomplishing our plans—but in how we respond to interruptions in a way that reaches out to others with the love of Jesus. In a way that sees interruptions—not as annoyances, but as God putting an important opportunity before us to care more about someone else than we do about ourselves. To look—not to our own interests—but first to the interests of others (Phil. 2.4).

I learned that quite often, it is God who is interrupting me.

Faith in Action (The Present Word) Dennis Brewer and Jane Steinkraus • Calvin 203

The Present Word guides our exploration of biblical text in an experiential style of learning—connecting faith and life —as we continue to seek a deeper relationship with God. This month we will begin our spring series, Acknowledging God. This study focuses on the God who calls people to worship and to acknowledge God’s ways in their lives.

Mudhouse Sabbath: An Invitation to a Life of Spiritual Discipline Sara and Brett Torbett • Upper Witherspoon

After author Lauren Winner’s conversion from Orthodox Judaism to Christianity, she continues to find that her life is shaped by the spiritual essences of Judaism– rich traditions and religious practices that she can't leave behind. In Mudhouse Sabbath, Winner illuminates eleven spiritual practices that can transform the way we view the world, and God. Winner writes with appealing honesty and rare insight. All ages are welcome!

You Are What You Love and Out of the Silent Planet Derrik Olsen and Phil Butin • Calvin 201

We will finish our current book, You Are What You Love: The Spiritual Power of Habit, on March 4. On March 11, we will begin our new book, Out of the Silent Planet, by C.S. Lewis. This is the first book in the Space Trilogy. We will decide as a group whether we will continue the trilogy with Perelandra and That Hideous Strength.

Serve God, Save the Planet Rebecca Haden • Library

Join us as we explore how the scriptural lessons of personal responsibility, simplicity, and stewardship can be applied to modern life through the experiences of the J. Matthew Sleeth, author of Serve God, Save the Planet. Sleeth encourages us to make environmentally responsible life changes by providing a how-to guide for making those changes in a hopeful invitation to re-imagine the way we live.

Children are an important part of worship here at FUPC! Children of all ages are invited to lead the call to worship, prayer of confession, or passing of the peace. This can be done independently or with the help of a parent, grandparent, or older sibling. Children in third grade and above may also sign up to acolyte! If your child would enjoy helping during worship, please visit with Kristi Button ([email protected]).

We have a special Time with Children in worship each week. Afterward, children under five years old may stay for the entire service or join our talented caregivers in Lower Witherspoon. Children’s worship packets are available each Sunday.

Childcare is provided in Lower Calvin for children under three years old where children hear a special Bible story each week.

Preschool Children (three- and four-year-olds) meet in Upper Knox with Ruth Rodgers and Lora Horne.

Kindergartners-First Graders meet in Upper Knox with Sara Eichmann and Melissa and Randy Werner.

Second-Fourth Graders meet in Lower Knox with Wendy Robbins and Christi Cox.

Fifth-Sixth Graders meet in Lower Knox with Hillary Fischer.

Vacation Bible School will be held June 18-22. Please save these dates on your calendar.

First School February was a busy month at First School. We learned about groundhogs, the US Mail, dental health, the Chinese New Year. And there were valentines to make! March will start with a Dr. Seuss celebration and end with Easter egg hunts and parties.

Box Tops are collected outside the Church Office, in the Narthex, and in the First School Lobby. Thank you to those that have been faithfully bringing them. The school receives 10 cents for every Box Top. The money is used to purchase supplies for our classrooms!

Children’s Ministry News Those with children are invited to join the FUPC Children’s Ministry Remind Class. If you have downloaded the Remind app for use with your children’s schools, this will just be adding a new class code on the app. The code is @fupcc. You can also text the number 81010 with the message @fupcc. This will be a way to get updates and reminders on what is going on with children’s ministry via text or the remind app. The information will be the same as Kristi’s emails, but occasionally there will be a reminder closer to the time of a children’s ministry event.

Be on the look-out for a new weekly newsletter format to highlight and promote the wonderful things going on with the children of FUPC! If you receive emails from Kristi already, this will automatically come to you. If you would like to be added to the children’s ministry email list, let Kristi Button know ([email protected]).

A Word from the Library A good way to share the wonder of the Lenten and Easter season is with books. The FUPC Library has a large selection of new and classic children’s titles from Carol Heyer’s The First Easter, to Jan Brett’s beautifully illustrated The Easter Egg. Although there are not as many offerings for adults, He is Risen: A Collection of Easter Stories, Poetry, Prayers…., and Teaching and Celebrating Lent-Easter are recommended.

Girl Scout Sunday is March 11. We invite all Girl Scouts to wear their uniforms to the 11:00 a.m. service and we will honor them during the announcements.

Summer Camps The time has come to consider summer camp at one of our nearby Presbyterian Camps! There are two-day camps available for children who just finished Kindergarten, as well as week-long camps for elementary through high school. Both Dwight Mission and Ferncliff have great things going on!!! The leadership at both camps is some of the best in the country right now and we are blessed to have two wonderful camps so near to us.

Dwight is an hour and a half to the west of Fayetteville. Ferncliff is three hours to the southeast of Fayetteville. Visit www.dwightmission.org for dates and Visit www.ferncliff.org for dates and registration registration information. information.

We have several church families who have already chosen weeks they plan to attend. We can let you know which and coordinate groups going together.

The P.L.A.C.E. 2018 The Changing Face of the Church

Are you an elder, deacon, teacher, leader, member, pastor, friend, youth or adult who wants to understand more about carrying out God’s vision for your congregation with change happening all the time around us—in our churches and in our communities? Then the place to be is The P.L.A.C.E.! This year we have BIG news! The Presbytery of Arkansas is offering the Presbytery Leadership Academy for Congregational Enrichment in TWO locations so we hope you’ll come and learn at one and, hopefully, both of these events. (Several workshops will be different in the two locations although both events will have the same theme.) These events are for ALL members and friends in ALL congregations of our presbytery.

The NWA P.L.A.C.E. First United Presbyterian Church, Fayetteville • April 7, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

The Central P.L.A.C.E. Second Presbyterian Church, Little Rock • August 4 (times to be decided)

A quick sampling includes workshops on new ways to present the Word in worship; ideas from Sunday that inspire Monday living; creating safe spaces for children and youth, including all with special needs; what to know in the face of an active shooter; getting news out through social media; embracing Hispanic culture and ministry; creating a canopy of care for the people of our world; growing young; what college students find in the Church; and what’s new in Clerk Training. Our Executive Presbyter, Rev. Stewart Smith, will present the keynote on the theme of the day. You’ll be able to attend two or three workshops. Afterward, lunch groups will form to eat together off-campus. We anticipate that these will be inspiring opportunities for congregations. We’d encourage you to bring a group from your church to talk together about what you hear and learn.

Please contact Sara Koenig (263-3971 or [email protected]) to volunteer for related hospitality at FUPC (greeting, baking cookies, set-up, or other help). We’re excited to offer this here. More information will be available soon through The Weekend Update and weekly bulletin announcements.

The event is free of charge. It promises to be a wonderful day. We hope you’ll plan to attend.

Brochures and registration materials are available through the Church Office or on our website (www.fupcfay.org). Childcare can be provided if requested by March 21.
