Back then, before air conditioning was invented, hot city summers were miserable and even unhealthy for children, so escaping to the country or the mountains for a few weeks became a popular trend. Today, kids have different reasons for making Bible Sum- mer Camp a part of their lives, such as: 1. Children learn independence; 2. Children learn to make friends with kids they haven’t met before; 3. Chil- dren learn to value community; 4. Children learn the importance of money management; 5. Children learn they are loved beyond their family circle; 6. Children learn that worship can be fun; 7. Children learn new skills; 8. It’s good, clean (though often dirty) fun; 9. Lives are changed. This year, the PDCOC youth were all encouraged to go to summer camp. Our lead- ership instituted the “No Kid Left Behind” motto and through your special contributions every kid should be able to go to our Church of Christ spon- sored summer camps. THANK YOU! Outreach and Family Ministry

This team offers home bible studies, hospital and home visits, shut-ins

visits, baptisms, and any encouragement needs. This team also offers

general maintenance duties - such as minor home/yard work and heavy lifting.

SUNDAY MORNING:

Bible Classes at 9:15a.m. with Worship Service to follow - we offer classes for all

ages. Donuts and coffee are provided in the kitchen before and after class. We also

have headsets for Spanish translations during Worship Service.

CHILDRENS BIBLE HOUR:

Bible Hour for young children is located in the large classroom next to the kitchen.

An announcement will be made to dismiss the children to the classroom.

SUNDAY EVENING SMALL GROUP STUDY:

Please see the insert for our “In the Word” Sunday Evening/Afternoon Bible Study

locations. Group leaders are available for more information.

LADIES’ TUESDAY BIBLE CLASS:

Over the summer they will be studying the scriptures and sending cards of encourage-

ment every Tuesday morning from 10-11:30am.

MEN’S WEDNESDAY MORNING PRAYER:

Wednesdays at 7:30a.m., the men meet at the church building for prayer and then go

out for breakfast.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY:

Wednesday night at 7:00p.m., here at the building.

SKY VALLEY WORSHIP & BIBLE STUDY:

4pm starts the combined Worship Service/In The Word Bible Study for the DHS/Sky

Valley areas.

This is Independence Day Weekend. We are in Coos Bay, Oregon today and will

be in Eureka, CA on Monday as we wind our way back home. As I ponder our Independ-

ence Day I keep thinking back to the last paragraph of the Declaration of Independence

which concludes with these words: “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm

reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our

Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.”

As each placed their name on the document they understood that they were com-

mitting treason. Benjamin Franklin is reported to say as he signed, “We must all hang

together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately.” Five were captured by the British,

were tortured and died as traitors. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two

lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army while another had two sons captured.

Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships from the War. Thomas Nelson,

Jr. urged General George Washington to open fire on his home when it was discovered

that the British General Cornwallis headquartered there. His home was destroyed and

Thomas Nelson, Jr. died bankrupt. John Hart lived in forests and caves for more than a

year after being forced from the bedside of his dying wife and 13 children. When he fi-

nally was able to return home his wife was dead and he couldn’t find his children. John

Hart died a few weeks later.

Why would they do this? They were not in the majority by far. Most people at

the time wanted to just keep things the way they were. War is so drastic. They must have

believed that their cause was just and right. They believed strongly “on the protection of

divine Providence.” Even so, many lost their lives and their fortunes. Yet they main-

tained their “sacred honor”. Their pledge to each other was sacred, and could not, would

not, be violated. They were men of their word! They made a pledge to each other before

God and upon keeping it hung their entire honor. They could lose home, farm, business,

family and even their own lives, but they would not break their pledge.

When we are true to our word we will find true independence. Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No.' – Matthew 5:37 (Berean Study Bible)
