makes us temples of the Holy Spirit in the midst of the world.

11am—12:30
Teaching point: Jesus, through his Church, uses His creation to draw us into His life.
Symbols used to point to something greater:
K-1:
3-4: Draw creative pictures that describe the words below. Remember, you cannot use words!
Love, Joy, Sadness, Mom Dad Anger
God uses the visible world to show us Him
Examples:
Creation story– God shows his creative glory by everything that he created. He created all of it for us!
Genesis 2: 7 God makes man out of the dirt
Genesis 14:18-20 Melchizedek the priest used bread and wine and blessed Abraham.
John 9: 1-7 Jesus uses clay to heal the man born blind
Luke 22, 14-20 Jesus uses bread and wine at the last supper.
Also Jesus used stories about people to help them learn about the Kingdom of God:
Matthew 13:3-9 and 18-23. Read the story and ask them to draw a picture of what they heard.

Give them signs sheet. What does this sign represent? Does it make you do what it represents?
*It came from a book. It has a no parking sign, a wash your hands sign, be careful don’t slip sign
and a recycle sign. I have them printed and ready to go.
God uses signs in the sacraments that both tell us what is supposed to happen and then it
happens.
For instance, in Baptism, we use water. What does water do? It washes dirt away, it helps life
grow, it quenches our thirst. In Baptism, Holy Water washes our sins away, it helps us grow in
the life of Christ because we have been washed clean and given entrance into the life of Christ,
the Church and the life of Christ quenches our thirst to be loved. Water is both the symbol and
the effect of Baptism. It symbolizes these things AND it does these things.
Sacramental Signs:
Show other sacramental signs. What signs to they see? What are the signs making happen?
Baptism—water, person is baptized
Confirmation—Bishop anoints with oil, person is Confirmed
Holy Eucharist—bread and wine become Jesus’ body and blood which fed and strengthen us
Reconciliation—you say the words of your sins and you hear the words of absolution from the
priests: your sins are forgiven.
Healing—anointing of the sick brings Christ’s healing power
Marriage—love between one man and one woman in marriage, and their vows to each other
helps them grow closer to Christ and build a family that lives for Christ. Children are the visible
sign of their love.
Holy Orders—the very person of the priest is used and become in the person of Christ “in
persona Christi”. He serves as Christ serves. His ordination makes him Christ to us.

Disposition and Reality
In each Sacrament Christ gives himself to us. The Sacraments are the most direct way we expe-
rience Christ in our lives. They are meant to change us.
Drop rock in a bucket of water. Did the rock change? No. It got wet but it did not change.
The Sacraments really have an effect but for the Sacraments to make us more like Jesus we
need to be like this sponge
Drop dry sponge into water. Did the sponge change? How did it change?
When you experience a Sacrament, Jesus’s love and ministry is really there, but it won’t force us
to cooperate. For the Sacraments to change us, we need to be like that sponge, ready to let God
make us more like him. Be open to the Sacraments!
What can we do to get ready for Mass and be ready to hear everything, pray and receive Jesus
at Mass? How can we make our hearts most open? What activities could we do?
What can we do to get ready to go to Reconciliation? What are some activities that can help us
be open to God’s forgiving love? (this one might be harder. Ideas could be: be aware of when
we have hurt someone else, or disobeyed mom and dad, at the end of our day think about the
ways we chose God and the times we did not choose God. When we prepare for Reconciliation,
doing an examination of Conscience which means what are the things I tend to do more often
that are sins? What don’t I do that I should do? )
Teaching point: The Mass : Everything flows to and out of the Mass
1. God Himself found men’s worship of Him pleasing or unpleasing. He was pleased with Abel’s
sacrifice but not that of his brother, Cain
In the course of time Cain brought an offering to the LORD from the fruit of the ground,4while
Abel, for his part, brought the fatty portion* of the firstlings of his flock. The LORD looked with fa-
vor on Abel and his offering (Genesis 4:3-5)
2. God was pleased with Noah’s offering and he instructed Abraham to make an offering of his
son Isaac. In Exodus 19, God established a way for the Israelites to worship Him and in His 10
Commandments he tells us to “Keep the Sabbath Day Holy”.
Talk—or draw: What is your favorite toy? What do you do you make sure your favorite toy is
ready to play with?
When we really love something, we play with it often and we take good care of it. When we real-
ly love someone, we like to spend time with them.
Who do we love? Who do we love to spend time with?
Who loves us the most? What could we do to spend time with the person who loves us the
most? Jesus loves us the most and wants us to put everything aside for him. He comes first and
then everyone and everything can be loved and enjoyed after Him.

Teaching point: Beginning to learn about the Church: What is in a Church?
(next meeting we will go through all of the parts of the Mass)
The Mass
Things in the Church to help us celebrate Mass– the following pages have pictures and activities
that I will print out for you and the students.
See attached “What will I see in a Catholic Church”. I did not use ALL of their things, so use it to
help you with the pictures I have. And not all of the pictures I included are in this additional docu-
ment, but I did label things for you in an identical page after the pages for the students.
I am going to print out Page 4 “A typical Church layout” for you and the students so that they can
color or identify the parts of a Church.
Because our Church is set up slightly different, do you want me to draw our Church and label it
for you or can you do this and explain it? Let me know.
After you are done with the pictures, do a closing prayer.
Closing Prayer: Jesus thank you for the 7 Sacraments and that you give them to us to help us
become more like you. Help us to always be open to the graces that come from the Sacraments
so that we can be your light and love to the world. Amen!
