Pensacola (34-40, 4-2 Second Half) won their fourth straight, taking the series from the Generals (41-34, 2-4 Second Half) with timely hitting and stingy pitching. After striking out the side in the first inning, Generals starter Justin Donatella (3-4, 3.73 ERA) got two outs in the second inning before damage was done. Batting for the first time in 2018, Pensacola pitcher Victor Payano poked a double down the left field line that cleared the bases, giving Pensacola a 3-0 lead with his first career hit. Donatella held the Wahoos down through the next three frames, but he gave up two more runs in the sixth and was saddled with the loss, totaling five hits allowed with three walks and six pun- chouts. Brad Goldberg, Wei-Chieh Huang, and Mason McCullough all made scoreless appearances over the final 3.2 innings to keep the Generals in the game. Josh Prince built on Monday’s 3-for-3 effort by belting his third home run of the year in his second plate appearance on Tuesday, putting the Generals on the board in the fourth. On the very next pitch, Jason Morozowski swatted a homer of his own, as the Generals hit back-to-backs jacks for the second time in June and the first time at home. The two solo dingers brought Jackson within a run at 3-2, but the Generals had trouble scoring again until the eighth. Down 5-2 with four outs to go, consecutive two-out RBI singles from Marcus Littlewood and Galli Cribbs lifted the Generals back within a run at 5-4, but the equalizer never came, as Jackson left the bases loaded in the eighth and did not threaten again. The 'Pen Is Now Mightier | In a 3-week span from May 16 to June 5, Jackson's bullpen received four new arms who threw 5.0+ First Half innings: relievers Bud Jeter, Daniel Gibson, Kevin Ginkel, and Brad Goldberg. In their first month (May 17- June 17), those 4 finished 12 games and notched 6 holds, 4 saves, 3 wins, 45 Ks, a 0.94 WHIP, and a 0.74 ERA in 36.1 IP. GInkel's performance has been especially strong, as his 11.1 scoreless innings of work to start his time at Double-A bested the previous season-high mark from Colin Poche (11.0) in April. >>RHP Wei-Chei Huang, who arrived for the start of the 2nd Half, brings a 2.59 ERA and 1.05 WHIP from High-A Visalia. Mac Still Working His Way Back | Before going on the DL on May 28, Mason McCullough's 1.72 ERA led all Jackson pitchers in 16.2 innings of relief. Since his return, McCullough has given up 11 earned runs over his last 3.1 IP in 5 appear- ances, allowing his ERA to balloon to 6.63. McCullough was a Midseason All-Star in 2017 (Cal. League, Visalia) and 2018. Regions Field Recap | Six of the eight Generals voted into the 2018 Southern League All-Star Game at Regions Field found their way into the action on June 19. After Galli Cribbs, Rudy Flores, and Jamie Westbrook all participated in the Home Run Derby, the Generals trio combined with Kevin Medrano to collect 3 hits, 3 runs, and an RBI in a 9-5 loss to the South Division All-Stars. Gratefully, neither Taylor Widener nor Justin Donatella allowed a run in their 1.1 combined innings pitched. Two Outta Three Ain't Bad | The Generals clinched the First Half North Division title with their 38th win of the year on June 15, beating Jacksonville 3-1. It's the second time in three years that Jackson has earned a postseason bid. Thanks in part to a red-hot start to the season, hitting coach Vince Harrison and the Generals offense ended the first half with league-leading marks in batting average (.273), on-base percentage (.346), slugging percentage (.413), total bases (982), doubles (136), hits (649), and runs (357). On the hill, pitching coach Doug Drabek can be pleased by a league-low total for the Jackson staff in runs allowed (278) and earned runs allowed (244), as well as 664 strikeouts and 31 holds, both league highs. Coming off a solid 2015 season at low Class A, Huang’s 2016 season got off to a late start because of an offseason military commitment in Taiwan. After six rocky starts at high Class A Visalia he was shut down with shoulder fatigue and soreness. After a couple of months of rest and rehab, Huang finished the season pitching long-relief outings at short-season Hillsboro. His durability has been an ongoing issue and is a red flag moving forward. When he’s right, Huang is able to locate his pitches well. He pitches to contact with a plus changeup that he uses to get swings and misses, and his fastball has good angle and sits 87-91 mph. His low-70s curveball is a below-average pitch. The most optimistic projection for Huang is No. 5 starter, but his subpar breaking ball and durability concerns may target him for a bullpen role.” (2016 - #21 Arizona prospect description)
