SERENITY SURVEY

• The purpose of the survey was to understand how online meetings are perceived by Serenity in response to Covid-19, and to be used to improve the on-line experience and determine the course of action moving forward

• The survey was completely anonymous, in keeping with the 12th tradition: “Anonymityis the spiritual foundation of all our Traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities.”

• The survey ran from 6/5/2020 to 6/14/2020 and was posted at most online meetings

• Total responses: 69

QUESTION 9: COMMENTS

The online meetings are great and need to evolve. IT STARTS WITH THE CHAIRPERSON. There are too many meetings offered throughout the day. And the focus from the chair person is becoming too lackadaisical. TOO MUCH TALKING BY CHAIR AND OTHERS BETWEEN EACH SHARE DURING THE MEETING. NO CROSS TALK NOR DOUBLE DIPPING. IT SHOULD BE MENTIONED IN THE INTRO AND SCRIPT. There are more than 2 people in the meeting. And we don't need music playing in the background by others before during and after the meeting. We should educate those to have respect while online before during and after the meetings. Someone online very well could be in pain and not be capable to reach out. I personally have heard a lot of bs before during and after the meetings. It's a learned trait to have respect for others regarding AA. Thanks for ALL YALL DO AND I HOPE IT CONTINUES TO EVOLVE WITH MORE STRUCTURE bc it is getting out of hand quickly.... THANKS FOR ALL THE HARD WORK AND EFFORTS TO MAKING THIS EXPERIENCE BETTER.

I like the online meetings not only for safety during COVID, but for the convenience. I personally work in Houston, so my commute is quite long. Having the meetings online during the week makes it easier for me to get to a meeting in-between other household priorities. I would love if our core group continued the meetings online. I still make it to meetings on the weekend, but the online meetings during the week really help me out.

I love the additional support this online meeting will allow. I would still attend once a weeknight person At least maybe more. Love love the online intimacy.

Start & end meetings right on time.

Thanks for the survey. Personally I attended 1 meeting in person and for the time being am more than satisfied with the online meeting due to Covid19. I am appreciative for ALL efforts. It is a personal choice for me. I am glad Serenity is providing a safe environment for our elders during this time, along with people having underlining health conditions; whether being online or in person. Serenity is providing this as best they can. One of our members in the medical field recommends taking temperatures of all who attend. Similar to what is happening in all other mental health facilities throughout the country. The device is less than $200 from what I was told. May be a solution for not having to wear masks throughout the entire meeting. I APPRECIATE ALL EFFORTS MADE AND MISS MANY. Thanks for offering this survey.

Due to concerns about family immunity concerns I cannot attend in person. My plan is to wait and see what happens with this disease. I do miss in person meetings

I got sober at Serenity, but moved away in Feb. The on-line meeting have been a God sent.

I have underlying health issues and as long as the Corvid-19 virus is still an issue, I plan on attending the online meetings as long as they are available. I would like to see both online and in person meetings continue. Especially the 6:39 am online meetings. We had 33 people at this morning’s online meeting. Plus, it was a new comer meeting.

I believe the on line meetings have been invaluable during our period of isolation, but I honestly believe that as beneficial as they are, there is no better exchange of "experience, strength and hope" than in-person meetings at Serenity.

I love the additional support this online meeting will allow. I would still attend once a weeknight person At least maybe more. Love love the online intimacy.

I believe online meetings remain vital right now.

QUESTION 9: COMMENTS

It would be interesting to try and meld the in-person and on-line meetings.

I’m worried that Serenity will not be cleaned & sanitized for me to feel comfortable attending.

The Serenity meetings are way too close together. I understand that some people don’t really care about being safe, but I can’t afford to do that for my health. I love y’all, but it’s not safe.

Many online chairpeople are prone to be over vociferous - there should be no reason a chairperson monopolizes the discussion in the meeting - example there is roughly 50 minutes for discussion in open meetings numerous chairs are prone to talk incessantly for up to 15 minutes when the meeting starts - thus shortening the opportunity for others to speak. Chair should bring a topic announce the topic - call on people quickly to keep the meeting moving. Also we have folks chairing meetings with much less than 6 months continuous sobriety

I love the online meetings but I think it is important to get back in the rooms where the newcomer can come and be a part of the hands on fellowship. Where they can pick up a book right then. Where they can talk to people face to face, in person, and find the support they need.

Please continue online meetings. They have helped me feel connected not isolated.

Online meetings are good as it concerns 'me'. During the time we've been doing online, there's been a couple of visitors BUT ZERO FIRST TIMERS! So nice and comfy for me seems to be not so good for being open to those currently in need.

thank you for being there for this alcoholic!

I will return to in person meetings when masks/face covers and the ultra cleaning are no longer required. I understand all the reasons and applaud the protocol. The online meetings have been wonderful for me. I attend daily. I have been able to reconnect with people I wouldn’t have probably had an opportunity to see. Great tool when traveling too, although I do enjoy out of town meetings. We would also need to post it on GSO and intergroup websites so more alcoholics will be aware of it.

We need to hustle to build membership. Small meeting will die; they always do. People get tired of hearing the same things from the same people.

Due to transportation difficulties, the online meetings will be great for me even after COVID. During this time, online meetings are essential for me as I am older and have health issues. I prefer Zoom because it has a breakout room feature that could be helpful for talking with newcomers after the meetings.I have shared this Zoom feature idea with Scott and Carol.

We attend more meetings because it so easy to sign-on with all our AA materials handy and no "commute". We can also hear each speaker more clearly by adjusting the volume and attend in a relaxed environment. Only wish is that more people would activate their screens to give the meeting more of a Fellowship feeling.

Keep up the good work

I have medical issues that will prevent me from regular meetings until my Doctor tells me its ok. I do prefer regular meetings but feel the online should continue in some form. I have been sober 43 and also prefer closed meetings.

I am more attached to the people in my group than in the online format. If they all decided to go to the club, that is where I would go. For now, I avoid the club because: -it’s convenient to do online; -I don’t want to have to wear a mask, keep our distance, not hug, etc; -I don’t want to have to sanitize afterward, particularly when I have to run to work to make it on time; -It’s too impersonal; -I’m perfectly happy online; and -I don’t want to transition mentally all over again.

Online attendees should edit their online meeting name for attendance by 1st name or 1st name w/ last initial only for anonymity.. Also, encourage camera use of face for online meetings. We connect more by seeing each other's smiles and pain.... fellowship identifying is important.

Covid will be an ongoing issue and many people need to protect their physical health.

Friday, June 5 Thought for the Day We alcoholics are fortunate to be living in a day and age when there is such a thing as Alcoholics Anonymous. Before A.A. came into being, there was very little hope for the alcoholic. A.A. is a great rebuilder of human wreckage. It takes men and women whose personality problem expresses itself in alcoholism and offers them a program that, if they are willing to accept it, allows them not only to get sober, but also to find a much better way of living. Have I found a better way of living? Prayer for the Day I pray that I may listen for the still, small voice of God. I pray that I may obey the leading of my conscience.

We haven't had many newcomers online unfortunately
