Dear Sequoits, On January 22nd, ACHS hosted the 8th Grade Open House, welcoming the Class of 2019. Prospective students and parents/guardians benefitted from learning about the many clubs, activities, athletics and other opportunities to become involved in ACHS. English The AP Literature classes will be heading down to Navy Pier to watch a Chicago Shakespeare Theatre’s pro-

duction of Macbeth on Friday, February 13. IF you know anything about “the Scottish play,” you’ll appreciate the irony. The Freshman classes have been working on To Kill a Mockingbird for a couple weeks, but will interrupt those lessons to help students navigate the new PARCC tests mandat-ed by the state. They will be practicing using the chromebooks and answering some PARCC example questions to prepare them for their battery of state tests. The Literary Magazine class is up and running. If your student has any poetry, short sto-

ries, screenplay, essays, artwork, etc, they would like to see published in our award winning magazine, please ask them to submit those entries to Mr. Worden in room 255.

TED-Ed TED-Ed has been meeting about once a month this year! In our meetings we watch a TED talk and then have a discussion about what we saw. The talks cover a range of topics and students often select the talks and lead meetings! We plan on meeting on the following Thursdays during semester 2: February 12, March 5, March 19, April 16, and May 7. We hope to see you there!

Science In Earth Science students mined copper carbonate and extracted pure copper metal from the green rock. They started by reacting the powdered one with acid until they had a blue copper sulfate solution. Then they dipped an iron nail into the blue solution and cemented copper out of the liquid! Students in Chemistry have been trying to determine whether orange juice, Gatorade or milk is better by looking at the concentration of sugar in each drink. Students made a concentration curve by creating sugar in each drink. Students made a concentration curve by creating sugar water solutions where they knew the concentration. They then compared the orange juice, Gatorade and milk to this graph to determine the sugar concentration.

Career and Technical Education Business students are exploring successful futures and careers, starting by creating Vision Boards. The boards, also known as Vision Maps or Treasure Maps in the business world, in-clude things that each student wants to achieve in order to have a happy and successful life. Once the broad goals are in place, students then research to determine the steps necessary to reach those goals. Does a career require college or additional training? What classes can students take at ACHS to start on the path to a dream job? As students interview profession-als in the field and conduct additional research, some confirm their career choices while oth-ers realize a need to make a change, or do some deeper digging. It’s a life lesson for all!

Students in Creative Foods (Foods 2) are working hard to design the perfect chili recipe, in honor of the Super Bowl. It’s all very scientific as they analyze the effects of various ingredients and quantities. It is also a com-petition, so they are keeping their ideas private for now. Of course the true winners are the lucky classes that will visit the kitchens to taste test and vote!

5 Essentials Survey Please help us reach our goal on the Illinois 5Essentials Parent Survey. In an attempt to solicit and gather as much information as we are able through various feedback mecha-nisms, ACHS is participating in the third annual Illinois 5Essentials Survey again this year. This 20-30 minute research-based survey is a unique opportunity for you to have a voice in improving our school. It assists us in identifying both strengths and weaknesses in our learning environment. This survey is based on the Five Essentials for School Success, an evidence-based framework developed by the University of Chicago. This framework identifies how school performance on five factors or “essentials” can indicate important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. Prior research has shown that schools strong on three or more of the 5Essentials were 10 times more likely to improve student learning gains than schools weak on three or more of the Essentials. Those 5Essentials are:

Effective Leaders Collaborative Teachers Involved Families Supportive Environment Ambitious Instruction

Please find the link below to complete the survey. The survey window will be open from now until March 13, 2015. We greatly appreciate your feedback and certainly value the perspective you are able to provide through this process.

Taking the Advanced Placement exams is an important part of all AP courses. Antioch Community High School desires that all students take AP exams for the AP classes that they have taken. Scor-ing well on an AP exam can often earn students college credit for their high school class, saving a significant amount on tuition. Please consult www.collegeboard.org to confirm course credit and placement for individual colleges and universities. For the 2015 AP exams, students at Antioch Community High School will be registering online. This registration will take a few minutes and can be completed from any computer with internet access. This year each AP exam costs $91.00. Antioch Community High School desires that every student be able to take their AP exams. The cost per exam for students that currently qualify for the free or reduced lunch program is $53.00. Students requiring financial assistance should contact Ms Johnna Slocum, [email protected], or see her in the Student Services Office to learn more.
