    GOLD COAST COMMUNITY CATCHMENT CRAWL

In March 2012, a successful community catchment crawl visited four different community initiated projects in the Gold Coast region, rangingfrom coastal reserve anddune restoration projectsat Federation Walk andCurrumbin to riparian andcorridor restoration at

    Austinville and CraneCreek.

Visitors were given a tour at each site to see someof the achievements todate, and an overview of the project work bycommunity group members.

Austinville Landcare showed their restoration work along section of

Mudgeeraba Creek. Over six years, the group together with partners hasturned a stretch of 3km of the creek from a weed invested mess to awell managed stretch of creek that the whole community can enjoy.

Lyn Wright President of Friends of Federation Walk , said their stretch of 3km of coastal reserve at the Spit was the green beside the gold. In 10years the group has developed the walk way into a recreationaltreasure.

Within two years, Friends of Crane Creek have re -vegetated a barestretch of the creek bordering suburbia and transformed it into a wildlifeoasis. Significant improvements in water quality have been achieved. It is

a magnet for wildlife and today is a recognised wildlife release area.

The crawl was a community initiative coordinated and sponsored by SEQCatchments and Griffith Centre for Coastal Management with supportfrom all participating community groups.

    Horse Property Owners and Managers

Caring for your horse property is equally as important as caring for your horse. Horses are not native to Australia, andcan cause a huge impact on the environment if the land that they live on is not cared for properly. Caring for your horse and the land that they live on does not need to be an expensive undertaking. Slight changes can lead to bigsavings and have many benefits including, improved health for horses and people who live on the property, lower feed bills due to more grass for longer periods of the year, happier neighbours, fewer flies and less dust and mud, cleaner water and more habitat for wildlife and increased property value. To find out more please contact LindaDurham to obtain a free copy of the Horse Management on Small Properties booklet published by Equiculture andSEQ Catchments.

SEQ Catchments has been busy running a series of Managing Horses on Small Acreage workshops across theregion and will be hosting a local Grass and Manure management workshop here on the Gold Coast in theupcoming months.
