    PASTURE MANAGEMENT FIELD DAY WIVENHOE

    The focus of the day was on managing and monitoring native and sownpastures to maintain good land condition, with the outcome being sustainabilityand profitability of a grazing business. It captured interest from graziers acrossthe Lockyer from Flagstone Creek to Coominya as well as graziers fromneighbouring catchments including the Upper Brisbane, Mid Brisbane andbeyond.

    Damien OSullivan from DEEDi led discussions on:

    Principles to balance pasture growth, utilisation and animal performance.

    Using indicator species to assess and monitor and when to sow pastures

    Suitable pasture and legumes for different land types and tips forsuccessful establishment

    25th August RegrowthVegetation workshop to be heldin Gatton from 9.30a2pm atStockyard Creek CommunityHall. This session is beinghosted by Lockyer ValleyRegional Council and

    participants will be given abackground to QueenslandsVegetation Management Act(1999) and vegetation frame-work, as well a detailed sessionon the recently releasedRegrowth Vegetation Codepolicy and procedures. Farmerswho have questions about theprotected native vegetation ontheir properties or are unsure ofwhat the Regrowth Code is, orhow it applies to them, will find

    these workshops worthwhile.Landholders who do not have aProperty Map of AssessableVegetation (PMAV) or have notrecently checked the DNRMwebsite to check their vegetationstatus on their property are alsoencouraged to attend.

    There will be a discussion onFire and Biodiversity in theLandscape by Craig Weldon(SEQ Fire & Biodiversity

    Consortium)

    The workshops are free andlunch and morning or afternoontea will be provided along with aready-reckoner summary of theRegrowth Vegetation Code.Participants are encouraged todownload their free Remnant andRegrowth Maps and bring themalong to the workshop fordiscussion.

    24 Aug 12 FACETS 2012FREE EVENT from 8.30AM to 5.30PM at the University of SouthernQueensland Toowoomba Campus. There is a promise of short, interesting andpunchy topics with a point, all from the perspective of agriculture.     To help people get involved, the Queensland Government will be offering Every-ones Environment grantsto community groups for a wide range of environmen-tal initiatives from 2 July 2012, such as: tree planting and restoring degraded land community clean up cleaning up our waterways run-off reduction and water quality improvement enhancing the natural beauty of local communities; andmonitoring the level of pollutants in streams.The $12 million grant program will provide for grants between $2000 and$100,000 over the next three years. The program will work with localcommunities, and small and large environment organisations to tackleenvironmental degradation throughout Queensland.     The Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland is the oldest, largest, and verywell respected wildlife-focused conservation group in Queensland and isbringing together some of Queensland's leading wildlife researchers andcampaigners to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2012.
