On behalf of the team and myself, I would like to welcome you all to the best city in the world. I still vividly remember my first week

in London; the confusion, the excitement and the anticipation of things to come. I know that many of you will also be going through the same emotional roller coaster I did. This is why we have decided to make this edition of the magazine all about getting to know your neighbourhood. Coming straight from our residents, you will find out about some of the best restaurants, bars and other local gems that make your neighbourhood special and unique. We also want to introduce you to the London nightlife – and since studying will also play a key role in your lives, we have included some tips on how to ensure you make the best start to your studies this year.

I hope you enjoy your time in London, wish you success in your studies and I look forward to seeing you around!

Letter from Karol

Welcome back to all our previous residents and a warm welcome to all of our new residents this academic year! If you’re looking for the best restaurants, bars and shops in

your accommodation area, here are the top suggestions from our residents.

King’s Cross has so many great restaurants to offer, and are all within walking distance from the accommodation. My top three are, Caravan, located in the old granary building, which

has a great upbeat vibe and a wide variety of eclectic global dishes. Granger & Co, a new restaurant that has an Australian flair – it’s a great spot to bring friends for a different experience. My personal pick is just on your doorstep and is a must for all burger lovers; Honest Burger, which you can find around the city. They offer the most delicious burgers combined with great atmosphere and an always welcoming staff.

If you’re looking for a fun pub The Big Chill House (just a few steps from the Kings Cross accommodation), is the place to be. A great location with happy hour and late-night drinking. The last place, which I will always remember, is Drink, Shop & Do, where, alongside amazing cocktails and food, you can basically buy anything they have displayed as well as join in on one of the amazing events which happen daily.

Notting Hill is an amazing and beautiful area with so much to offer and many hidden gems. My top suggestions would be to check out a great pub, restaurant and club called The Paradise; they have open mic night every Wednesday which is always

good fun. The Electric Diner and Cinema is a great restaurant with a cinema on Portobello Road. Another suggestion would be Sacro Cuore, which is one of the best pizzerias in London and just a ten minute walk away. There is also a delicious and fun Mexican restaurant

and small club called Santo. The Chamberlain Pub is beautiful with excellent steaks. I recommend head to Union Tavern to enjoy the ribs night with other residents each Thursday just a minute from your home.

Restaurants aside, I would suggest exploring Notting Hill by taking a walk along-side the canal. Portobello Market on Sundays is good fun and highly recommended. Queens Park is beautiful, with football and tennis courts open to the public. Aside from that, enjoy all the beautiful, charismatic and colourful homes that Notting Hill offers. It is a magical neighborhood!

Spitalfields is a charming area where tech and corporate meets fun and trendy – located just a five minute walk from the 'always happening' Shoreditch. Home to restaurants such as the fantastic Mudmee Thai

Restaurant; which have the best pad thai and other Thai dishes that London has to offer. If you fancy an amazing experience, The Breakfast Club is a must for an all day breakfast, followed by a visit to the The Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town,

located ‘behind the fridge’ and requires a secret password to enter. How cool is that?

The cocktail bar I would definitely recommend is The Discount Suit Company. The bar focuses on great cocktails with traditional methods and forgotten classic recipes, which you will fall in love with. Other areas I would strongly suggest checking out are Old Spitalfields Market; a charming market just a two minute walk from the residence, with great little vendors for accessories, clothes and delicious street food. Boxpark is also worth a visit as they have pop-up shops at the bottom, and great street food on top. It is also a great spot for Happy Hour drinks on weekdays.

IDENTIKITAge: 25Nationality: Colombia, BogotaUniversity: LCF - MA Fashion Design ManagementAdvice fo newcomers: ‘Explore! Also be part of the parties and activities to meet the people who live in your residence.’

“Be more focused, be organised and achieve higher grades.” We’ve all been guilty of making empty promises at the beginning of every

new academic year. All of these goals are great, however, it’s important to instil a plan that will allow you to achieve them successfully. Here are my top

seven suggestions to ensure you’re starting the new school year on the right foot.

to start the new academic year on the right foot

| Editor’s article

by Amanda Aziz

10

1. STAY ORGANISED WITH A PLANNER: I cannot stress this enough: time management is crucial

to the success of your academic performance. A good planner can make time management and remembering deadlines much easier. As soon as your lecturer advises on the assessment due dates, I suggest plugging these into your planner. This allows you to see the amount of time you’ll need to prepare. I like to circle the dates I should begin revising for each of these assessments in advance, to avoid putting it off once you’re focused and deep into your studies.

2. PREPARE MATERIALS THE NIGHT BEFORE: You never know what will happen tomorrow, so getting your materials ready ahead of time is a great habit. This will definitely decrease stress levels and save you time. It also helps ensure you are prepared, gives you extra time to get organised and reduces the possibility of forgetting things and a sleepless night.

3. BALANCE IS KEY: It is extremely important to balance your studies with your personal life. Make time for what I call “The Triple F’s”: family, friends and fitness. Ensure your study schedule allows you to spend time with family, go out with friends and stay active about 3-5 times a week.

Editor’s article | 11

4. CREATE A SCHEDULE: During the assessment period, I would strongly advise creating a study schedule that divides a big chunk of

work little-by-little. This will allow you to balance your work a little bit every day and avoid feeling overwhelmed. It also affords time for the “Triple F’s”. For example, if you have to study five chapters for an exam, divide this over a week and reserve studying for six hours a day on weekdays, three hours on weekends and allow yourself time at night to visit family, go out with friends or go for a run.

5. STAY ENGAGED: It is important to stay on top of your work day-by-day. In addition to preparing class material the night before, I would suggest taking notes during class and reviewing the notes after class before you go to bed. It may seem tedious, but this will help you keep the information fresh in your mind as opposed to not reviewing it at all until the assessment period.

6. GET FIT: My sixth tip is to maintain your body as your mind will follow. There are fully equipped gyms available 24/7 in all our residences, as well as fitness classes for you to join. So be sure to take advantage of this – afterall, who else

can boast about having so many options available at their doorstep? Only you!

7. SLEEP WELL: Sleep is just as important as everything else in ensuring you have a successful academic year. Although it may seem tempting to stay in bed longer, try to get 7-8 hours of sleep. Studies have shown that this is the optimal amount and any more or less can have adverse effects. Sleep also allows your brain to process everything you have studied during the day so it is vital in ensuring you remember the content come exam time.
