September Block – Birds in the Air Use a fall color for the darker pieces (green, brown, rust, red) and a cream, off white or light tan for the lighter pieces. Cutting Darks: Cut (3) 3 ½” squares. Subcut once on the diagonal to make (6) triangles Lights: Cut (2) 3 ½” squares. Subcut once on the diagonal to make (4) triangles. You’ll only be using 3 of them. Cut (1) 8 7/8” square. Subcut once on the diagonal to make (2) triangles. You’ll only be using 1 of them. Make 3 halfsquare triangles by sewing a dark triangle to a light triangle on the long edge. Be careful as you’re sewing on the bias. Press towards the dark.

September  Block  –  Birds  in  the  Air  

Use  a  fall  color  for  the  darker  pieces  (green,  brown,  rust,  red)  and  a  cream,  off-­‐white  or  light  tan  for  the  lighter  pieces.  

 

 

Cutting  

Darks:    

Cut  (3)  3  ½”  squares.  Subcut  once  on  the  diagonal  to  make  (6)  triangles  

Lights:    

Cut  (2)  3  ½”  squares.  Subcut  once  on  the  diagonal  to  make  (4)  triangles.    You’ll  only  be  using  3  of  them.  

Cut  (1)  8  7/8”  square.  Subcut  once  on  the  diagonal  to  make  (2)  triangles.    You’ll  only  be  using  1  of  them.  

 

Make  3  half-­‐square  triangles  by  sewing  a  dark  triangle  to  a  light  triangle  on  the  long  edge.    Be  careful  as  you’re  sewing  on  the  bias.    Press  towards  the  dark.  

 

Sew  the  half-­‐square  triangles  and  the  other  3  dark  triangles  to  form  the  upper  left  pieced  triangle  of  the  block.      

Sew  this  pieced  triangle  to  the  large  light  triangle  to  finish  the  block.      

Finished  block  size  8”
