A new national study reveals thatmembership in a local chamber ofcommerce can significantly boost abusiness’s image among consumers,as well as among other businesses. Ina scientific survey of 2000 U.S. adults,The Shapiro Group, and Atlanta-based strategic consulting firm, foundpositive perceptions of chambermembers in a number of area, includ-ing overall favorability, consumerawareness and reputation, and likeli-hood of future patronage.

The study, commissioned by theAmerican Chamber of CommerceExecutives (ACCE) showed thatwhen respondents were told that aparticular small business was a mem-ber of a local chamber, they were 44percent more likely to rate it favorablethan study respondents who werenot told of the chamber affiliation.Respondents were also 63 percentmore likely to want to purchasegoods or services from a small busi-ness that is a chamber member.

“We discovered that informingsomeone about a company’s chambermembership opens the door to sub-stantial increases in positive percep-tions of that business,” said AlexTrouteaud, Ph.D., senior strategist forThe Shapiro Group. “There clearly isa feeling by our respondents that

chamber membership is synonymouswith quality and desirability.”

The positive impact of perceivedchamber membership is felt by bigbusinesses, too. For example, whenconsumers believed that a restaurantchain was a member of the localchamber of commerce, they were 40percent more likely to eat at the fran-chise in the future. And if a consumerbelieved that one of the major auto-mobile manufacturers was a memberof its local chamber, that a consumerwas 9 percent more likely to considerpurchasing his or her next car fromthat automaker.

“Join your local chamber, be anactive participant in your chamber’sprograms and be sure to let your cus-tomers and prospects know you’re aproud chamber supporter when theycome in your business and when theysee your marketing material.” said JimBlasingame, small business expertand president of Small BusinessNetwork, Inc.

J. mac Holladay, CEO of MarketStreet Services, an economic develop-ment consulting firm based in Atlantathat helped create the study, said, “It isrefreshing to learn what we have sus-pected for years - - that chamber mem-bership and community involvementare good investments.”

National Study Findings:

• Consumers are 44% more likely to think favorable about a busi-ness that is a chamber member.

• Consumers are 51% more likely to be highly aware of a business that is a chamber member and 57% more likely to think posi- tively of its local reputation.

• Consumers are 63% more likely to buy goods and services in the future from a company they believe is a member of a local chamber.

• When business decision-makers believe that a business is a chamber member, they are 37%

more likely to think favorably of the business, 51% more likely to be highly aware of it, 58% more likely to think positively of its local reputation, and 59% more likely to buy goods and services from it.

• 82% of respondents believe that the local chamber of commerce helps create jobs and promotes local economic development.
