From Cantor azu

By the time that you read this, I will have just returned from my solidarity mission to Israel with JNF. As exhausted as I will feel after that travel, I know how much my travelling to Israel means to our community and to the people of Israel. We stand together – and must continue to do so in the future.

While Israel remains on our minds, we also find ourselves reflecting on the arrival of Rosh Hashanah. What stands out from 5774?

Looking back, I am amazed by how much has been packed into this last year: life with a third child (definitely different than two!); shaving my head in memory of the remarkable “Superman Sam;” planning a social justice mission to travel to Kenya (although postponed for safety reasons); and now a trip to Israel.

I know that the year consisted of more than those isolated pieces, yet it was those events that gave my year definition and made it memorable. Those were the times when I was pushed out of my established comfortable boundaries. To borrow from Passover – what makes this year different than every other year? The events and experiences when we break out and reach new places.

Moving outside of our familiar boundaries is not easy. We often feel a mixture of excitement and trepidation. Harnessing that energy, we can achieve amazing results. One social innovator explains, “If it feels comfortable, ‘I’m going to sign this petition; I’m going to post it on Facebook,’ then you’re not doing enough to move things forward. You’ve got to have butterflies in your belly, your heart has to be racing, your palms have to be sweating.”

As you reflect on the events that made 5774 memorable for you, I invite you to join us for Selichot, on September 20th. Selichot is our annual ritual of preparation for the High Holy Days. This year we will be showing the powerful film David, the story of the unusual friendship that forms between a Muslim boy and a Jewish boy in Brooklyn. The movie examines boundaries and explores what is possible when one goes beyond what is comfortable.

May 5775 be a memorable year, having brought us the strength and courage we need to stretch beyond our comfort zones. May it be full of blessing and hope. And may this year be a year of peace for us, and our people everywhere.

Wishing you a Shanah Tova U’Mtukah!

Exciting developments are taking place within the Reform movement. Several months ago we shared that the Central Conference of American Rabbi’s (CCAR) is in the process of creating new High Holiday machzor, Mishkan HaNefesh. This new High Holiday prayer book will feature substantial changes from Gates of Repentance

and is the first High Holiday prayer book written for the Reform Jewish community in over a generation.

Separated into two volumes, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the new machzor will be based on the layout of Mishkan T’filah and will feature the now familiar multi-vocal approach to prayer by featuring Hebrew text, an English translation, interpretations of the prayer, as well as additional explanation and illumination. The new CCAR machzor not only presents modern interpretations of many of the High Holiday prayers, but it also includes many traditional ancient and medieval liturgical poems (piyyutim).

As a URJ (Union of Reform Judaism) congregation we made the decision to transition to this new machzor when it becomes available to us in 2015. This past spring, to help with the transition, Temple Shalom invited members to participate in piloting the Rosh Hashanah and Kol Nidre services The response we received from those who attended was overwhelmingly positive! Unfortunately at that time we were not able to pilot additional services. However at our 3pm Yom Kippur service on October 4, Rabbi Miller and I are pleased to present a draft of the new machzor’s afternoon service. We hope you’ll join us for all of our High Holiday services but especially this new afternoon service as you share in the development of this prayer book!

May this New Year be a sweet one for you and your loved ones!

From rabbi miller

The New Year 5775As President, I am proud to be part of the leadership of Temple Shalom and am grateful to be surrounded with an impressive group of individuals that care. Our clergy, staff, Board of Trustees, and other volunteers work endlessly to

make sure that Temple Shalom is the best it can be.

As we move into the New Year of 5775, Temple Shalom is very thankful for many things. First we deeply appreciate the spiritual leadership, support and service that the Rabbi and Cantor have provided. We are thankful for all the volunteers without whom it would be very difficult to provide our many events, activities and spiritual experiences. Thank you to all the educators who spend an enormous amount of their time making sure that our children have an outstanding education and Jewish experience. Thank you to the directors, both religious school

and preschool, for providing their guidance and expertise to support the teachers and our youth. We appreciate and value our staff who keep our office and building working smoothly.

Without this family of devoted and passionate people, Temple Shalom would be a hollow place. Because of them we are the house of worship, the house of learning, and the house of community and relationship building we cherish. It takes a great deal of work and time to bring the members the experience that they expect. We thank all of you for what you do.

As our holiest time of year approaches, we wish health and well-being to all in our community, to all who give so willingly of themselves – clergy, staff, and volunteers – to make Temple Shalom the One Family home.

May our congregation continue to go from strength to strength.

It’s September and our students are settling into their new fall routines and schedules. Religious School classes will begin on Sunday, September 14th with our annual “Back to School Breakfast” at 9:00AM which is generously sponsored each year by our Temple Shalom Men’s Club. This

is just one of the many things that they do for our Religious School children throughout the year and we are very grateful and appreciative of their support. Our first day of school will be packed with a full schedule for students and parents including meeting the teachers, an opening day assembly and parent orientation. Parents: Don’t forget to visit our “Temple Bean Café” located in the Library while your children are in school.

The first day of Hebrew School is on Wednesday, September 17th for all 3rd through 6th grade students from 4:30PM-6:00PM. Following T’filah, parents and students will go to the classroom to meet the

teacher and there will be an orientation for parents of 3rd grade and new students while the students are in class.

Students in the Confirmation program for 8th -10th graders will also begin on September 14 and remain with their assigned classroom for the entire morning. The first class for Senior Study 11th and 12th graders will be held on Tuesday, October 7th from 6:00PM to 7:30PM.

All students must be registered before the first day of school and families must be members of Temple Shalom. A “Back-to-School” packet with detailed information, calendars and schedules will be emailed to each family by the first week of September. Please review it closely and return any forms pertaining to your children.

Remember to read the weekly Shofar newsletter every Tuesday and check our new web page on the Temple’s website by going to www.naplestemple.org and clicking on the Education tab and then on the Religious School dropdown tab.

From the religious sChool direCtorby Caren Plotkin

As we dip our apples in honey, we pray for an additional measure of sweetness. May we continue to grow in our commitment to our faith, our people and community. May all Jews experience blessings in the year ahead, and may the world become a better place for all your

children.” Rabbis Bennett Miller & Eric Lankin

New beginnings. It’s always so delightful that as the Jewish New Year approaches, our students begin another year of their preschool experience. Here at Temple Shalom Preschool our staff is so excited to start another year of growth, dedication, and challenges. We watch the faces of both old and new students as they enter the building with looks of wonder and eagerness. Their growth, both physically and

emotionally, during their absence over the summer months, never ceases to amaze us.

With each New Year, our commitment to improvement and development continues. Our amazing enrichment programs and superb curriculum not only help to maintain Temple Shalom Preschool’s status as the unsurpassed preschool program in Naples area, but raise the standards of education enabling staff to bring out the best in each of our students, raising self-esteem, confidence, and a firm foundation for their school years ahead.

Here at Temple Shalom Preschool, we wish all a very Happy, Healthy, and Productive year ahead.

sisterhood newsby Sandy Stone, Sisterhood President

We’ve had a wonderful Men’s Club summer! The baseball outing at the Miracles game in Fort Myers was a great success! The game was good, but the fireworks were amazing! We are definitely planning to repeat this event next summer.

As of this writing, you should have received our annual Men’s Club dues statement. Please take time to renew your Men’s Club membership, or if you are not currently a member, please join us; we’re counting on YOUR support!

As in the past, your Men’s Club will continue to support financially and with man power, many of the Temple’s functions and projects. We will also continue to support our local Jewish community and the State of Israel. Over the past two years the Men’s Club has contributed over $35,000 in support of many worthwhile Temple and community causes.

Although the Men’s club has a wide variety of activities and events throughout the year, only one of them is a fundraiser. The Men’s club’s sole source of income is the money we raise from dues and the annual Dinner Theatre Fundraising Event. So please join us and become a member. By doing so, you will enable us to continue the support that we provide for the Temple, the community and the State of Israel.

If you have not received or have misplaced your dues statement and wish to join, it’s simple: Just send a check to the Temple, Attn. Men’s Club. Make the check out to the Men’s Club. The dues are $36.00/year. If you are able, please consider the Mitzvah Membership category which is $136.00 per year.

My wife Lori, along with the entire Men’s Club board, join me in wishing you L’Shana Tova…. A happy, healthy, prosperous and above all, peaceful New Year.
