“I really enjoy workingwith our Councillors, community volunteersand staff to move ini-tiatives forward,”Wildman stated. “I’vebeen really lucky tohave served with a

Council who bring different perspectives, but have alwaysseemed to get along well.”

A number of staff retirements over the past few years have re-sulted in new hirings throughout the Township’s staff struc-ture.

“We are still in a period of transition and working out somekinks with roles, responsibilities and core duties,” he added.“With personnel changes in almost every staff position, it isimportant to maintain some continuity.”

Throughout the years,Wildman has served on the St. JosephIsland Museum Board, and chaired the Recreation & Parks,Events, and Environmental Committees. He also has servedon various ad hoc committees working on such things as thefunding model for the Algoma Manor re-development, the fu-ture of Matthews Memorial Hospital, lobbying for local healthservices in central Algoma, and has worked to restore blooddraw services in Richards Landing and Thessalon.Wildmanhas also been very active in attempting to convince the Al-goma District School Board to maintain school resources inlocal communities.

I have several yearsexperience on St.Joseph TownshipCouncil both in themid 1970`s andmore recently fromthe mid 1990`s to2002. While onCouncil, I servedon several boardsand committees in-cluding being Chairof the PlanningBoard. I sat on theMatthews Memo-rial Hospital Asso-ciation Board andrepresented the Is-land and area onthe Sault and Area Hospital Board.

While in business in Richards Landing, I served as Chair ofthe Chamber of Commerce. I currently volunteer as a driver atthe Trefry Centre and I am on the Board of Directors of the St.Joseph Island Free Methodist Church.

I originally filed nomination papers for Councillor, but afterbeing encouraged by several people, I decided to withdrawand run for Mayor, because I think it is time for a change, andI have a strong interest in serving the residents of this commu-nity. I believe I have the skills, knowledge, experience and abil-ities to do the job in a way that will benefit the entirecommunity. I believe in community, I believe in helping yourneighbour and working hard for the benefit of everyone. I lovethis Island and if I am elected, I will always strive to give mybest so that others can prosper, grow and have the quality oflife they deserve and expect in this community.

I try to live each day focused on two basic principles: first,“love God” and second, “love your neighbour as yourself”. It isnot easy but it is that simple, and this is how I will approachmy job as Mayor of St. Joseph Township. My top priority dur-ing this election campaign is to listen. I want to hear what isimportant to the people of St. Joseph Township. If you want totalk, call me at 705 246-3502 or email me [email protected]

Anger Management: 10 Tips toTameYour Temper

Taken from a recent study by the Mayo Clinic

Do you fume when someone cuts you off in traffic? Doesyour blood pressure rocket when your child refuses to coop-erate? Anger is a normal and even healthy emotion — but it’simportant to deal with it in a positive way. Uncontrolledanger can take a toll on both your health and your relation-ships. Ready to get your anger under control? Start by consid-ering these 10 anger management tips.

1. Think before you speakIn the heat of the moment, it’s easy to say something you’lllater regret. Take a few moments to collect your thoughts be-fore saying anything — and allow others involved in the situ-ation to do the same.

2. Once you’re calm, express your angerAs soon as you’re thinking clearly, express your frustration inan assertive but nonconfrontational way. State your concernsand needs clearly and directly, without hurting others or try-ing to control them.

3. Get some exercisePhysical activity can help reduce stress that can cause you tobecome angry. If you feel your anger escalating, go for a briskwalk or run, or spend some time doing other enjoyable phys-ical activities.

4. Take a timeoutTimeouts aren’t just for kids. Give yourself short breaks dur-ing times of the day that tend to be stressful. A few momentsof quiet time might help you feel better prepared to handlewhat’s ahead without getting irritated or angry.

5. Identify possible solutionsInstead of focusing on what made you mad, work on resolv-ing the issue at hand. Does your child’s messy room drive youcrazy? Close the door. Is your partner late for dinner everynight? Schedule meals later in the evening — or agree to eaton your own a few times a week. Remind yourself that angerwon’t fix anything and might only make it worse.

6. Stick with ‘I’ statementsTo avoid criticizing or placing blame — which might only in-crease tension — use “I” statements to describe the problem.Be respectful and specific. For example, say, “I’m upset thatyou left the table without offering to help with the dishes,”instead of, “You never do any housework.”

7. Don’t hold a grudgeForgiveness is a powerful tool. If you allow anger and othernegative feelings to crowd out positive feelings, you might

THE BRIGHT DANCING LIGHTS OF THE AURORA are ac-tually collisions between electrically charged particles fromthe sun that enter the earth's atmosphere. The lights are seenabove the magnetic poles of the northern and southern hemi-spheres. They are known as 'Aurora borealis' in the north and'Aurora australis' in the south..

Auroral displays appear in many colours although pale greenand pink are the most common. Shades of red, yellow, green, blue, and violet have been reported. The lights appear inmany forms from patches or scattered clouds of light tostreamers, arcs, rippling curtains or shooting rays that lightup the sky with an eerie glow.

What causes the Northern Lights? The Northern Lights are actually the result of collisions be-tween gaseous particles in the Earth's atmosphere withcharged particles released from the sun's atmosphere. Varia-tions in colour are due to the type of gas particles that arecolliding. The most common auroral color, a pale yellowish-green, is produced by oxygen molecules located about 60miles above the earth. Rare, all-red auroras are produced byhigh-altitude oxygen, at heights of up to 200 miles. Nitrogenproduces blue or purplish-red aurora.

What are Northern Lights?

Bad Habits for the HeartDr. Dan Sicoli, Chiropractor & Clinical Acupuncturist

It’s known that if you want a healthy heart, keep triglyceridesdown. What are triglycerides (TG’s)? It’s the fat found in theblood, and an increase in TG’s equals an increased risk ofstroke and heart disease. Here are some bad habits and howto fix them:

Bad Habit (BH) #1: Drinking soda and fruit juices. Sugarand fructose, which are used as sweeteners, increase TG’s.Extra calories in sweetened drinks can cause a weight in-crease, which places more stress on the heart. Drinking waterand unsweetened drinks is the easiest fix.

BH #2: Eating white foods like pasta, rice or bread at mostmeals.White flour can increase TG’s. Switch to whole wheatpasta.Whole grain or sprouted grain bread are better alterna-tives.

BH #3: Eating a lot of red meat.Red meat is high in satu-rated fat. Butter and cheese contain the same saturated fats.Choose lean meats and protein alternatives, like chicken andturkey, which are lower in saturated fats.

BH #4: Drinking several glasses of alcohol per day. Toomuch beer wine or spirits can increase TG’s.What to do is setlimits; one drink per day for women, 2 for men.

BH #5: Overeating. Large meals can greatly increase TG lev-els. A solution is obviously to eat less and slower, as it givestime for your body to tell you you’re full.

BH #6: Skipping meals. You’re never too busy to eat some-thing. If you skip a meal, you’re more likely to overeat at yournext meal, causing a TG spike. Your best bet is to eat 3 squaremeals a day with sensible portion sizes.

BH #7: Being sedentary. Not moving around makes it diffi-cult for the body to metabolize the sugar we ingest. The solu-tion is to move around: walk around the house duringcommercial breaks, for every 30 minutes of sitting at thecomputer, walk for 5, walk to get the mail etc…You get theidea.

BH #8: Smoking. This increases the chance of heart disease, thereby doubling the chances of getting heart trouble if highTG’s are present. Live tobacco free. Besides increasing the riskof COPD and other lung diseases, amplifying the effects ofTG’s is just another reason to stop.

Take care of your heart and it will take care of you.

The connection between the Northern Lights and sunspot ac-tivity has been suspected since about 1880. Thanks to re-search conducted since the 1950's, we now know thatelectrons and protons from the sun are blown towards theearth on the 'solar wind'. 1957-58 was International Geo-physical Year and the atmosphere was studied extensivelywith balloons, radar, rockets and satellites. Rocket research isstill conducted by scientists at Poker Flats, a facility under thedirection of the University of Alaska at Fairbanks - see webpage http://www.gi.alaska.edu/

The temperature above the surface of the sun is millions ofdegrees Celsius. At this temperature, collisions between gasmolecules are frequent and explosive. Free electrons and pro-tons are thrown from thesun's atmosphere by the rota-tion of the sun and escapethrough holes in the mag-netic field. Blown towards theearth by the solar wind, thecharged particles are largelydeflected by the earth's mag-netic field. However, theearth's magnetic field isweaker at either pole andtherefore some particles enterthe earth's atmosphere andcollide with gas particles. These collisions emit lightthat we perceive as the danc-ing lights of the north (andthe south).

The lights of the Aurora gen-erally extend from 80 kilome-tres (50 miles) to as high as640 kilometres (400 miles)above the earth's surface.

Where is the best place to watch the NorthernLights?Northern Lights can be seen in the northern or southernhemisphere, in an irregularly shaped oval centred over eachmagnetic pole. Scientists have learned that in most instancesnorthern and southern auroras are mirror-like images thatoccur at the same time, with similar shapes and colours.

Because the phenomena occur near the magnetic poles, northern lights have been seen as far south as New Orleans inthe western hemisphere, while similar locations in the eastnever experience the mysterious lights. However the bestplaces to watch the lights (in North America) are in thenorthwestern parts of Canada, particularly the Yukon,Nunavut, Northwest Territories and Alaska. Auroral displays

can also be seen over thesouthern tip of Greenland andIceland, the northern coast ofNorway and over the coastalwaters north of Siberia. South-ern auroras are not often seenas they are concentrated in aring around Antarctica and thesouthern Indian Ocean.

Areas that are not subject to'light pollution' are the bestplaces to watch for the lights.Areas in the north, in smallercommunities, tend to be best.

When is the best timeto watch for auroraldisplays?

Winter in the north is generallya good season to view lights. The long periods of darknessand the frequency of clearnights provide many good op-portunities to watch the auro-ral displays. Usually the best

ANGER..continued from page 6

find yourself swallowed up by your own bitterness or sense ofinjustice. But if you can forgive someone who angered you,you might both learn from the situation. It’s unrealistic to ex-pect everyone to behave exactly as you want at all times.

8. Use humour to release tension

Lightening up can help diffuse tension. Use humor to helpyou face what’s making you angry and, possibly, any unrealis-tic expectations you have for how things should go. Avoid sar-casm, though — it can hurt feelings and make things worse.

9. Practice relaxation skills

When your temper flares, put relaxation skills to work. Prac-tice deep-breathing exercises, imagine a relaxing scene, or re-peat a calming word or phrase, such as, “Take it easy.”Youmight also listen to music, write in a journal or do a few yogaposes — whatever it takes to encourage relaxation.

10. Know when to seek help

Learning to control anger is a challenge for everyone at times.Consider seeking help for anger issues if your anger seems outof control, causes you to do things you regret or hurts thosearound you.

Our Hilton Beach Drop-Off Box IsNo Longer Available

FOR YEARS, OUR READERS have enjoyed being able to gettheir classified ads, announcements and other items into theIsland Clippings simply by using one of our Drop Off Boxes, located at Ambeault’s Confectionery, Kent’s Corner and theHilton Beach Post Office.

Recent events have now resulted in the elimination of two ofthose three boxes. Following the hopefully temporary closingof the Kent’s Corner store, Canada Post regulations have nowforced the removal of our box from the Hilton Beach PostOffice, although we were able to retrieve its contents for thisweek’s issue first.

We will continue to monitor and pick up reader submissionsfrom the Ambeault’s box for at least the near future, as we as-sess the possibilities and viability of other options.

We remind our readers that classified ad and announcementcontent can also be emailed to us directly [email protected] or mailed, faxed or phoned in.Our contact information is included in every issue.

time of night (on clear nights) to watch for auroral displaysis local midnight (adjust for differences caused by daylightsavings time).

Legends of the Lights'Aurora borealis', the lights of the northern hemisphere, means 'dawn of the north'. 'Aurora australis' means 'dawnof the south'. In Roman myths, Aurora was the goddess ofthe dawn. Many cultural groups have legends about thelights. In medieval times, the occurrences of auroral displayswere seen as harbingers of war or famine. The Maori ofNew Zealand shared a belief with many northern people ofEurope and North America that the lights were reflectionsfrom torches or campfires.

The Menominee Indians of Wisconsin believed that thelights indicated the location of manabai'wok (giants) whowere the spirits of great hunters and fishermen. The Inuit ofAlaska believed that the lights were the spirits of the animalsthey hunted: the seals, salmon, deer and beluga whales.Other aboriginal peoples believed that the lights were thespirits of their people.
