Welcome and Welcome Back!

The Cherrytree staff, Mrs. Gibson and I welcome you and your family to Cherrytree Public School. We are all looking forward to a year filled with learning and growth for the entire Cherrytree School Community. Over the past week, we have had the pleasure of reconnecting with some families and meeting new families. Our Open House is scheduled for Thursday, October 9rd . We look forward to greeting many more of you on that evening.

As ever, we look forward to parent involvement in our school community and activities. Our students benefit immensely from your participation, and as we all know, children whose parents are involved in their school DO BETTER!

One way you can support Cherrytree is by serving on the school council. School councils play an important role in ensuring the success of all students and communicating student success to parents and community members. Serving on Cherrytree’s School Council can give you the opportunity to be involved in the school, be part of the advisory role of Council and become a voice for parents and other members of your school community. Please see the attached letter for more information about serving on our school council.

We want our families to feel welcome at Cherrytree. To keep all our students safe, please use the main doors only and sign in at the front office at all times. All visitors moving around inside the building must wear a Cherrytree Visitor Badge.

As in the past, if you are interested in volunteering at Cherrytree, please call the main office and speak with Mrs. Gibson, our Vice Principal. We will be setting up an interview and orientation session for volunteers. We want to have our Reading Coaches in classrooms as soon as possible.

Our new kindergarten classrooms opened last spring. The final phase of our construction is nearing completion. However, we are waiting for the fences for the kindergarten yard to be installed. Until these fences are completed, we will be using the original kindergarten yard at the back of the school.

The teachers have been busy the last week of August preparing their classrooms for our students. Our custodians, Mr. Brantom, Ms. Ellis and Mr. Sganga have also been

working very hard over the summer to have the school ready. Thank you. The school looks beautiful.

Attached to the back of this newsletter you will find a staff list for Cherrytree.

Reorganization at Cherrytree

Last June, we created classes with a balanced make-up. At this time, all class lists are tentative until after reorganization day. As enrolment can still vary in September, we may have to reorganize our classes and some students may be placed in a different class. Our class sizes are determined by provincial and board staffing guidelines. Staff at Cherrytree will continue to carefully assess student needs when making decisions on class placement.

There is a Reorganization Day this year. Reorganization Day is on Tuesday, September 23. There will be no school for students that day. Re-organization is used to fine-tune the best possible balanced class make-up for the school. Any changes to classes will be made by Wednesday, September 24th.

Students with Life-Threatening Allergies

At Cherrytree, we have many students who have life-threatening food allergies. Please do not send any nuts or food items containing nut products to school in lunches and snacks.

If you have a child who has severe allergies, please contact the school immediately and speak with the principal or vice-principal and your child’s teacher.

Because of the severe allergies and safety of all our students, staff cannot distribute treats or food which has been sent in from home. If you wish to remember your child’s birthday or wish to send in a class treat, please consider items such as pencils, special erasers or little notebooks.

Assemblies at Cherrytree

On Thursday, September 25th, Cherrytree will hold our first Climate Assembly for this school year. Our Climate Assemblies are based on the Cherrytree Code of Conduct and the 6 Peel Character Traits—responsibility, respect, caring, honesty, co-operation, and inclusion. The topic for September is respect. Special awards will be handed out to two students in each class who consistently demonstrate responsibility throughout the month of September. We welcome and encourage parents, who are able, to attend these assemblies.

Our Code of Conduct and the Peel Character Traits are in the student agenda. To support your child’s success at school, please review these pages with your child(ren). When you have reviewed these pages, we ask that you and your child sign the first page of the agenda.

Arriving on Time for School

The entry bell rings at 8:55 a.m. Classes begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. Please help your child to arrive on time. If you child will not be attending school, please call the attendance line by 8:55 a.m. The attendance line number is 905-454-2252, extension 1.

Supervision on the Yard

We want our Cherrytree students to be safe. There is staff supervision on the yard starting at 8:45 a.m. Please do not drop off your children before 8:45. Our supervising staff are wear orange safety vests so that there are visible to parents and students alike. Morning and afternoon recesses for students in grades 1-4 are supervised by staff. During lunch hour, the yard is supervised for students in grades 1 to 4 from 12:15 to 12:55. Students should not return after lunch until after 12:15 p.m.

Kindergarten parents, please refer to the separate letter that was sent home about kindergarten lunch. In kindergarten, the policy in Peel is “hand over hand”. This means that a kindergarten child is transferred from the parent/caregiver directly to a Cherrytree staff member.
