Hello and a warm welcome to everyone!

I hope the beginning of this academic year finds you in good spirits and excited for the journey ahead of you! My name is Miranda Cain and I look forward to serving you as the Online and Print Editor of College Week. My staff and I have published this issue of College Monthly so that we might be with you on the first steps of your 2014-2015 college experience.

For many of us we find ourselves at home in the halls on campus, and comfortable in the chairs we sit on, but for a number of us this is new, thrilling, and maybe a little intimidating. Regardless if you are a first time freshman, a transfer student, or a returning student, you are not alone. I remember my first day at USF as a blur. I was not sure where my classes were, how friendly I should be or how difficult the material was. I soon stumbled upon what seemed to be my niche here at USF. I fell love with the media program and dove into the taxing workouts with the softball team. I discovered how much I really did love this campus and all the people from all walks of life that contribute to our uniqueness. I hope that you can find that here too.

I want to help you feel at home, wanted, welcomed, and loved. Here at USF we consider ourselves a family, Coofam to be more specific, and that is something I have found never leaves you. College Monthly and College Week are reflections of you. These publications are what you make them because you matter, because you are USF. I want to personally extend the invitation to be a friend of our staff, our department and me because we are not able to do what we do without you and your help. So please, get comfortable, read our articles and tell me what I can do to make your college experience more than memorable.

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the University of Sioux Falls’ 131st year. On behalf of faculty and staff, I want to congratulate you on your decision to attend USF this semester. We look forward to a great year! A presidential colleague of mine remarked that come mid-August three things show up on a college campus; student leaders, fall athletes, and our personal adrenaline! I couldn’t agree more, and I am thrilled to welcome students and their families.

At USF, you will encounter some of the same characteristics you would find at a much bigger institu-tion. NCAA athletics, a multitude of academic majors from which to choose, student organizations, activities, honor societies, a television studio and two radio stations, technology-laden classrooms and a beautiful campus. There is one unique difference. At USF, you are part of a Christ-centered campus community where friends and mentors look out for one another. We encourage our faculty and staff to integrate their faith into every aspect of the University – whether they’re teaching in the classroom, coaching a sport, directing a play or musical ensemble or interacting with students in the cafeteria. My hope for you this semester is that you will appreciate the small classes, personal atten-tion, comfortable atmosphere, and the opportunity to form close relationships with peers, professors and administrators.

As I begin my 18th year as President of USF, I continue to marvel at the quality of students who enroll each year. I wish you the best as you navigate your way around campus in search of new aca-demic challenges, the development of new relationships and your exploration of service and ministry opportunities. This fall we are also welcoming several new faculty and staff, a new Director of Ath-letics, a new Dean of Students, a new Vice President of the USF Foundation, a new Director of the Bookstore, a new Director of Facilities, new leadership within the residence halls and a host of other new employees with fresh minds and energy. Exciting events will be held on campus from the very first few days of the semester. I encourage you to get involved and bring a high level of energy to all you do at, and for, the University.

Blessings for a great year . . .

Mark BenedettoPresident

The members of the Residence Life team welcome students into their new homes and help them get situated; this is what we live for. It brings me such joy to walk around cam-pus on Move-in day and see all of the new and returning faces as they connect with friends who they are just meet-ing or reconnecting with after the summer months. We talk about community a lot at USF and move-in day and the events that follow during the first week are just a few ways that we try to help students get plugged into our commu-nity. My hope is that students feel comfortable here and want to get involved in as many ways as possible. God has created us for community and I feel so blessed to be in a role here at the University that helps in facilitating that for students. It is going to be a great year, GO COUGARS!

Cougars Move In

Move in day is probably one of my favorite days of the year! You see, after students leave for the summer the campus is enveloped in silence. There is the occasional summer visit or registration day to provide relief, but for the most part the campus is still. The Student Development team works with other offices to prepare campus for our new and returning students. Towards mid-august athletes begin to move in and the energy is almost palpable. Life slowly starts to fill the res-idence halls and the common areas. More students pop in to say “hello”; there is excitement in the air. The slow build-up of energy finally culminates on Labor Day in one glorious four hour block of time known as move-in madness. New and re-turning students alike flood campus with vehicles full of their belongings and parents who might not be quite ready to say goodbye. We have groups of cougar leaders who are ready to help students move all of their belongings in to their new rooms. These students volunteer to wake up early and carry stuff all day…with smiles on their faces!! This is why I love our USF students.

Italy will forever be one of those unforgettable experiences. The USF concert chorale was blessed with amazing memories on this tour. From going to old coliseums, to touring vineyards, to visiting some of the most famous art museums and cathedrals in the world, to nightlife with the locals and not to mention having the best tour guide in the history of awesome tour guides. Every part of this trip was an adven-ture and the people who I was able to share this experience with made it all

“Joe and his hospitable and welcoming team went above and beyond in assist-ing us with our production. To enter into an atmosphere that embraced and met the unique needs of our per-formers was beyond integral to our success. We look forward to having the opportunity to work with this team again in the future.” -Heather Pickering

While some students may have utilized the summer months for much needed rest and relaxation, the USF campus was buzzing with activity and gave a helping hand to local associations in need of assis-tance.
