From Karen’s Desk
Welcome back to the routine of school for all of our school families.
We hope you had an exciting summer!
This year our summer programs were filled with field trips, physical activi-
ty, community events and plenty of outdoor time playing in the sun.
Our Montrose location shared a loss of our beloved Anthony. Some of our
families and educators attended his memorial service in July and the children
decided as a group that they would have a memorial baseball game and raise
money for the charity he loved. They raised a great deal of money for the
charity. What an amazing group of children to honour him this way!
Our location in South Pointe now has a draft landscape plan ready to take to
the school division for approval then begin our grant writing process. We will
host another meeting in October to move the process forward. Take a look at
the plans placed on the bulletin board within the preschool and infant
hallway. It will be great to get moving on that project.
Our location in École Sir William Osler opens on September 4 to a great
group of families who worked so hard for us. We had many volunteers build
shelves, deliver donations and come to our open houses. Our rooms are set up
in a Reggio inspired manner. I will tell you more about that in our October
newsletter.
We look forward to working with all of the new K.I.D.S. Inc. families!
Sincerely,
Karen Ohlson
Executive Director

South Pointe Fall information
We have enjoyed a fantastic summer at K.I.D.S. Incorporated South Pointe. Our team of
dedicated, caring exceptional professionals created and implemented an array of age
appropriate, diverse indoor and outdoor experiences throughout the summer with the children
looking forward to what was happening each day. We are excited to begin our fall programming
with the children in our centre, with new families and a few new educators. Please take the
time to introduce yourself to the new members of our K.I.D.S. Inc. community. Each program
will highlight the staffing teams per room in their program specific reports.
- Parking in the school drop off zone: drivers are required to park in the parking spots, not in
the loop as it can be a danger to the children and drivers when pulling out of designated park-
ing spots. Please follow the school protocol and only park in the parking spots.
- Between the 8:30 am—8:50am and 3:10pm -3:40 pm the school drop off zone is very, very
busy. Families may want to avoid this time period to bring and pick up their child as there are
over 800 children in the school.
- Please help keep the centre clean by removing outdoor shoes and scooting them to the side be-
fore entering the Centre.
- Label all your child’s belongings (i.e., hats, shoes and clothes) so we can keep lost items to a
minimum.
- Wash hands (yours and your child) upon entering the Centre.
- Ensure that your child has appropriate clothing for fall outdoor play
- Ensure that your child has a pair of indoor shoes as well as outdoor footwear appropriate for
the weather
Some of the familiar faces of the summer months are going back to school or onto other areas
of life. We were so fortunate to have them at South Pointe over the summer months. A fond
good-bye and with much appreciation to Paulo, Matt, Laura, Christie and Carrie. We wish you
all the best !

South Point Preschool News
What a wonderful summer we had in the Preschool Program! Days were filled with incredi-
ble activities and experiences, interactive theme days, and daily adventures planned by the educa-
tors such as Icky Sticky Day, Animal Kingdom, and Halloween in July. The children also enjoyed
many visitors such as School of Rock, Fire Safety House, and Activate Sports. Lunches and snacks
were often enjoyed picnic style outside around the community along with daily experiences being
provided outside. The children spent many days splashing in our little wading pools, running
through the sprinklers, chasing bubbles and butterflies, catching crickets and ladybugs, digging in
the sand and dirt, and generally enjoying all that summer had to offer.
Moving into the Fall 2018, we are getting prepared for new preschool groups and new adventures
to be had and memories to be made. Some educators and children will be moving into new spaces,
along with new educators joining the preschool program, so please feel free to take some time to say
“hello” and get to know the new educators.
Cedar Room Main Educators are: Anjana, Yuner, and Robyn
Pine Room Main Educators are: Kathia, Emma, Brittani, Hilarie, and Carly
Spruce Room Main Educators are: Charini, Rupinder, Amy M., and Amy L.
Kate, Jill, and Chhaya will be spending time in each of the preschool rooms throughout the day and/
or week.
We are looking forward to the new changes, and cannot wait to see the new friendships, and
relationships and the children’s development blossom and grow as we move forward.

South Pointe School Age News We had amazing weather for the summer holidays which provided us with the opportunity to explore our community on a regular basis. We had 2 groups this summer: Our Tamarack which consisted of grades 1 and 2 children and our Cottonwood group who had children in grades 3 and up. Here is some of our highlights this summer:
Tamarack
The Tamarack children got to participate in many theme days such as Mad Science day, Halloween in July, Bob Ross day, We had some awesome visitors like Star Dome and Prairie Wildlife Centre. There were countless field trip as well. The children had fun exploring the neighbourhood, playing games together and creating multiple structures with blocks.
- Robyn Lucas
Cottonwood
The cottonwood children enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere that summer brought. They enjoyed the easy going flow and having the ability to influence their day. This group spent countless hours playing gym games, exploring the community (parks, going on neighbourhood walks,), riding bikes and playing group games in the field. They amazed us with their never ending energy level. Music became a big interest this summer and you could often hear music playing in the background. The children loved the independence of being able to choose their songs, often coming up with a system they felt was fair to ensure that everyone got to hear their favourites. The end of summer brought School of Rock to our centre. A fantastic end to a wonderful summer. The children “rocked out” on drums, guitars and pianos while belting out the lyrics to some old time favourites. We had countless field trips, special theme days, visitors and experiences for the children. A couple of our favourites was having a campfire at Birds Hill Park and riding our bikes with Paulo. The end of summer was bittersweet for the Cottonwood children. The excitement of new beginnings was tainted with sadness. The last day of summer brought a goodbye for the Cottonwood children. Our educator Paulo had his “Last day” with the children as he prepares to return to school in September. I know that the children will miss him greatly but we wish him all the best in his future plans which we hope includes us.
Fall This fall is an opportunity for new beginnings. Our groupings have changed a little. Outside the hallway to school age there are letters posted to families outlining the particulars as well as the names of the children in each group. Lots of thought and planning was put into placing the children with their age group, the children’s emotional and social needs as well as their interests. Our Tamarack Room has two programs, Kindergarten and School Age. Shuai and Rupinder will be the primary educators for these children with Shuai spending the majority of his day with the kindergarten age group. Our Cottonwood room has our younger school aged children and their primary educators are Robyn and Elizabeth. The Poplar room has moved and is now on the first floor and is attached to the library. Our oldest school aged children will call this home base. Their primary educators are Carly and Lisa. Please note that rooms are no longer divided by Permanent and Temporary Space groupings. Please ensure that you know what days of care your child has at K.I.D.S. Inc. by referring to your program manual. Outside is an important part of our curriculum. Your child will be going outside daily so please ensure that they have the appropriate clothing. Children will need outside boots or shoes, layered clothing (sweaters or jackets that they can remove as the day warms), and a water bottle. Check the “Places that we go” bulletin board located on the right side as you walk in to the centre to see where your child’s group is. Lisa Klassen School Age Supervisor

Jaime is planning on returning back with us in the spring after her courses are completed. Good luck! We are also going to miss the wonderful children from Sir William Osler who joined us for the summer. We know you are going to enjoy the new K.I.D.S. Inc. at your school. We are excited to introduce our 2 new staff, Shae Lynne and Julia, who started at the end of August. Welcome! Thank you Graham for returning to help out during the busy last wo weeks in August to help out with the children, moving furniture, and participating in our field trip.
School Age News
In the summer at K.I.D.S. Inc., Brenda brought in Monarch caterpillar
eggs that were laid on the milkweed in her garden. This year was one of
the best years we have ever had for Monarch butterflies. Prior to
mid-August the children reared and released over 30 butterflies here at
Montrose School. After mid-August we continued to released release
butterflies, but now we attached special stickers to the butterflies. These
stickers are supplies by an organization called Monarch Watch, https://www.monarchwatch.org/tagging/.
The reason the late summer monarchs are tagged is because it is generation of butterflies that migrate to
Mexico to over winter. The children learned to establish a monarch habitat, the gender of a butterfly and
identify the caterpillar’s developmental age. They also have a greater awareness if need to grow milkweed,
as it is the only host plant for monarchs. The joy and excitement the children express when they see a but-
terfly take flight for the first time never gets old.

Preschool News:
Take a look at some of our pictures that we took this summer on the Parent Board to see the
adventures we enjoyed. Whether it was a preplanned theme day, visitor, or regular hot
summer day, educators dreamed up amazing ideas to help enhance children’s play.
Summer is a special time to relax and enjoy free time from the other 10 months of structured
routines. The educators ensured our summer was presented to children as a child-led, fun-filled
experience, while encouraging reading, social awareness, physical fitness, and other
preschool skills to continue to thrive in our environment. Now that the weather has started to
cool and the leaves are changing colours, we eagerly look forward to continue fostering relationships with
our current friends, and new preschool friends that will join us this fall.
