An Inside Look At Our Amazing Banquet Staff! By Patric Miller - Board Member, Chair of Membership Committee

I had the sincere pleasure of seeing our banquet and event staff “as a client” this past month. The first occasion was the marriage of my daughter Katie, which included welcoming half of New Jersey to Shadow Hills for the week prior and during the “blessed event.” While I have always known that we have a great staff, I was completely blown away by the amazing work they did to make the event everything we had hoped for, and more! The attention to detail, the support at every turn, and the seamless execution and incredible food, made this an “epic event.” Members from our wedding party, several of whom belong to clubs back East, said they have never seen an event so beautiful and welcoming.

However, I also got to see just how extraordinary they really are, when they were operating at “full capac-ity” a couple of weeks later, handling four overlapping events, without as much as minor bump in the road.

Fall is right around the corner and it’s going to be a busy one on the golf course. Construction of the new tee complex on hole #2 will begin the first week of September. This project will be completed in house and seeded by mid-September. Play will continue from the exist-ing tees until next Spring. The last two weeks of September we will be aerifying and sanding fairways, tees, approaches and greens. Aerification of greens will take place on Sept. 25-26, as well as a deep-tine aerification on October 12-13. This same process was implemented last Fall and we observed a great improvement in the drainage of the greens. Sand-ing of the rough and traffic areas will also occur during this time. Tree work will continue, completing the pruning and canopy lifting that was not finished last winter due to the wet condi-tions. In addition, we will be working to improve landscape areas, installing drainage, filling edges along the new cart paths and removing the old paths. (The picture is of the wildflowers that added color to the course along water hazards this year!)

SHCC PGA Junior League Team Wins Greater Eugene and Competes in Regional Play In Boise

Our SHCC Team 2 won the Greater Eugene PGA Junior League championship for 2017! Players in the picture are from left; Jayden Tate, Blake and Tyler Mikel and Max Hunter. Of course Brandon Hepner and Pat Fitzsimons flank the trophy winners. There were five other members of team 2 not pictured; Brock Nelson, Kendall Smith, Olivia Thompson, Kai Holmes and Madison Holmes. Four of our kids, Tyler Mikel, Brock Nelson, Cal Potter and Carter Schmidt were selected to the All Star team which won at Trysting Tree, and competed at the regionals in Boise. A season ending banquet was held at RiverRidge on Saturday July 29th to award certificates and toast a great season!

It is one of the most wonderful times of the year to live and play in Oregon. Fall not only has great weather, but also Duck and Beaver football returns to help fill our weekends. It is my belief that golf in its purest form is a rural sport. Shadow Hills offers one of the most peaceful rural golf environments that I’ve experienced in 53 years of golf. The evenings at the club offer such a great place to practice, play or dine. Golfers of all levels can improve their game, while enjoying the scenery! The practice facility provides you a unique op-portunity to work on every facet of your game, all contained in one expansive area. The McKay Learning Center, offering the TrackMan Swing Analysis technology, only enhances the experience even more.

You would be hard-pressed to find a nicer outdoor din-ing facility than the deck overlooking your wonderful golf course. The idea of dining outdoors this time of year is very appealing, but most outdoor eating facilities in the Eugene area are noisy, or in an area full of commotion. The weather will probably provide us a few more great weeks to take ad-vantage of this opportunity. Don’t find yourself in November wishing you would have enjoyed the experience one more time before winter.

September marks the month when things begin to slow down at the club. The pool closes for the season as of Tues-day, September, 5th. It’s been a very busy pool season, and I hope you have all enjoyed it as much as our staff has. The last Monday we are open for food service until next May is September, 4th. We will be keeping the lounge open on Monday’s through September, but with the “after-hour’s menu” only. The process of aerification begins on Monday the 18th, fairways, then greens, followed by tee boxes. These are all necessary to provide a great winter golf experience.

In September we will be sending out the ballots for the board of directors elections. Please take time to make an informa-tive vote.

It’s hard to believe school is about to start, football games be-gin, and our summer golfing weather will be changing in the next few weeks. We have had a very good summer (although a little hot), and we are now through all of our traditional Shadow Hills Invitational golf tournaments. The course has survived well, considering the amount of play and the hot weather we have had. Hats off to Ryan and his crew!

This being September, the board of directors elections are just around the corner. Our by-laws tell us that we need to have in place the beginning of this month a list of candidates that will be running to fill 3 board positions. We have had 2 committees working for a while on developing a group of candidates. The candidates must be a full-time voting mem-ber, and a member of shadow Hills for a minimum of 2 years. The board also is encouraging the nominating committees to select nominees that have served on committees. These nominees will be posted soon. Later in the month, if you are a voting member, you should be getting a ballot by mail, with pictures and bios on each candidate. You can cast your ballot up to the beginning of the annual meeting, which is scheduled for October 12th at 6pm.

You will be seeing some construction activity out at the covered training facility. We will be installing a weather wall. This is being done to protect the covered hitting area, so we can better use this popular practice facility when the winter weather comes. The wall will be on the south side and both ends of the covered area. It will consist of a wood wall up to about 3 feet and then removable polycarbonate panels up to the bottom of the roof. These panels can be removed in the better weather months. We are targeting for the work to be completed by end of October.

Greetings from the Clubhouse!

The Luau was a great success as always. I’ve heard nothing but compliments about the food and the setting. Thank you again to Chef Diana and your staff, for a spectacular buf-fet. While I’m handing out kudos, Kayla Marshall and the Banquet Staff did some really great work setting everything up. Finally, Jenny Shelton and her staff decorated the venue beautifully as ever. These events take a monumental amount of work. The kitchen staff cooked for 3 days. The setting up of tables, chairs and the buffet lines took an entire day for the banquet staff, and decorating took a day and a half for Jenny and several assistants. It’s this kind of “plain ol’ hard work” on the part of the staff that makes Shadow Hills Country Club a great place to be!

Coming up in September: Monday, September 4th is Labor Day. The Clubhouse will be open at 6:30 for breakfast until 1pm. Lunch will be served from 11am to 5pm, with the kitchen closing at 5pm. This is the last day for the pool to be open, so come and enjoy it.

On the final three Mondays in September, The clubhouse will be open from 11am to 5pm for drinks and the After Hours Menu. The After Hours menu features Hot Dogs, 7-inch Pizzas, Warm Pretzels and Corn Dogs. The Kitchen will be closed on these days.

After Monday, September 25th, the Clubhouse will be closed on Mondays for the season.

On Monday, September 11th, the lounge will close at 5pm for routine maintenance.

Events: On Friday, September 15th, the course will be closed for the NCU Charity Tournament.

On Sunday, September 17th, we have the Shadow Hills Country Club Couples Classic. Please see Gary Davis in the Pro Shop for Details.

That’s all for now! Warm Regards!

It is hard to believe the summer is behind us and September is upon us!

The Me and My Shadow, and Men’s and Women’s Invitation-als were a big success! You can find the final results of the all of these tournaments on the web site, as well as in an upcom-ing ShadowHillsExtra.com article. We have some great golf events coming up. The upcoming Couples Club Championship will be held Sunday, Septem-ber 17th @ 1pm. In addition to crowning our Couples Club Champion, it is also a fun social couples event for those not as serious. You can sign up online or give us a call here in the golf shop.

The 11th Annual Patriot Golf Day Fund-raiser is a joint initiative of the PGA of America and the USGA. Patriot Golf Day enlists the support of public and private golf facili-ties across the country to raise funds for this worthy cause. Donations received will support Folds of Honor, providing educational scholarships to the children and spouses of ser-vice members killed or disabled while serving our country. Shadow Hills will participate by holding a special “Game of the Day” on Sept. 3rd & 4th with some amazing prizes, in-cluding a $10,000 hole-in-one opportunity. See the Pro Shop for details and watch the Email News You Need To Know for more information.

A couple of reminders:

• Pace of play is always of utmost importance. With that said, remember that all 5-somes must be approved through the golf shop. If you are going to play 5, remem-ber you are looked at as playing slow by definition, so make sure you always keep up with the group in front of you or keep it to a 4 hour round when possible.

• Also remember to not take your pull carts between greens and green-side bunkers and to keep power carts at least 30 yards from greens.

• To minimize negative effects on the West Practice Tee(WARM-UP TEE), please limit yourself to 1 green bag of balls and please hit within the hitting area desig-nated. Both the South and North Tees on the practice fa-cility have balls set up daily for your convenience. Thank you for your cooperation.

Friday August 11th, Shadow Hills entertained an outdoor wedding (for close to 150) in the Smith Wed-ding Garden…The Sand and Seed Party, the opening BBQ for the first Member Camp-In event, as well as a High School Reunion in the Din-ing Room. Four events...at the same time...it was amazing to watch! And through it all, the staff moved with smiles on their faces, while going out of the way to make sure every-one was taken care of, from 150 plated dinners, a huge buffet in the dining room, a BBQ feast in the pool area, to “S’mores” when the campfires were lit.

We are truly blessed to have an outstanding staff here at Shadow Hills. In addi-tion, as you can imagine, we are on track to break all standing records for Wed-ding and Banquet income for calendar year 2017.

If you are considering any event in the coming year, from Weddings, Banquets, Reunions, to Holiday Company Parties, you owe it to yourself to find out what “All Inclusive Pricing and Service” is about at Shadow Hills. Amazing food…amazing service…with every detail taken care of on site. Take it from a satisfied customer…the results are EPIC!

Valley League Team Play Our Shadow Hills VL Team has played 4 of the 5 events for 2017. We are in a solid FIRST place for Low Gross. The last event is in September, and we should be bringing the Low Gross trophy back to Shadow Hills. Susie Leo, Rep.
