Moving on, making way …
At this time of year our thoughts often focus on our youngsters as they move on to a new phase of their education – 4-year-olds beginning their school life, 11-year-olds starting at secondary school, young people being introduced to college or uni-versity life or employment – it can be a scary, exciting, challenging time of life for them in many ways and so we often share those emotions, wondering how they’ll cope, remembering how we felt, eager to see them grow, and to discover a bit about education today. And sometimes we adults are sad to leave behind the years of meeting children at the school gates, seeing children and teenagers on a daily or regular basis.
The one thing we don’t so often think about is the fact that when people, young or old, move on to a new things they create opportunities for others! Children mov-ing into the top year group of their school often find opportunities to discover and develop their own talents – responsibility, organisation, leadership, etc. We were very sad to say farewell to several children and a few mums at Little Fishes in July but it leaves space for other children to be ‘top dogs’ and other mums to use their own ideas and creative talents to help with running Little Fishes.
I’ve just heard a short item on Radio 4 about research into female life patterns – apparently female killer whales (orcas) also stop child-bearing some decades be-fore the end of their lives, unlike most of the animal world. The older lady orcas use their long experience to guide the whole group to the best feeding grounds etc. – even the male orcas live considerably longer lives when there is an experienced matriarch in the group!
We keep changing and our world never stands still – but one thing never changes and that’s God himself. He is with us through all the ups and downs of our life, through all the beginnings and endings and he has a wider and infinitely much wiser view of human life – he is the rock on which we can lean throughout our lives, especially when things are changing around us or when we’re seeking a new role in life. We are never too old or too young – there is always something we can contribute to our communities. May September bring its own rewards to us all!
Mary

Continuing below is the beginning of an excellent article by Dave Hill of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Colorado, defining the words in common use within the church broken up under various headings: These are general terms used in the church that don't fall into the other categories. Candlemas: The Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord in the Temple, February 2nd. The term comes from the tradition of blessing candles on this feast and carrying them in procession as a symbol of the "Light to Lighten the Nations" (see Nunc Dimittis). Christmas: The Feast of the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ celebrated on December 25th. The Christmas Season extends through January 6, the Feast of the Epiphany. Also known as the Twelve Days of Christmas. Easter: Both the Sunday celebrating the Lord's Resurrection and the season of Fifty Days following. Easter is always the first Sunday after a full moon that falls on or after March 21. It therefore always occurs between March 22 and April 25. The odd dating is based on the Lunar Calendar used by the Jews, which then sets the date for Passover, the meal celebrated at the Last Supper. Epiphany: The Feast of the Manifestation of Our Lord Jesus Christ (i.e., celebrating the visit of the Wise Men to the infant Jesus). It is observed on January 6th. The Epiphany Season continues until the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. Fast: A day of special devotion observed by acts of discipline and self-denial. Fasting Days include Ash Wednesday, other weekdays of Lent and of Holy Week, Good Friday and all other Fridays of the year, except for Fridays in the Christmas and Easter seasons, and any Feasts of our Lord which occur on a Friday.

Orlingbury Parish Council VILLAGE REVIEW
We have been asked by Wellingborough Borough Council to under-take a review of our village needs. This includes housing, road safety, lighting, building land, general maintenance or anything else that you believe your Parish Council should be attending to. As we are currently designated an infill village this presently means that there is no building allowed outside of the village building line. Do you have an interest or question on any of these matters, if so please come along to our friendly Parish council meeting on Thursday 8th September 2016 at 7.00pm or if you are unable to attend please send your correspondence to Mrs A Mclaven, Parish Clerk. 6 Wellingborough Road , Isham, NN14 1HR [email protected]
SPEEDWATCH
We are hoping to take part in Speedwatch again, early next year. To take part in this scheme we need at least ten volunteers. You will be required to attend a morning of training which is held on a Saturday, even if you have taken part in Speedwatch before. If you would like to know more or volunteer please contact Ali Campbell [email protected]
Or Ali McLaven. Parish Clerk. [email protected]
ALLOTMENTS
The Parish council has some allotments available for rent
in the village. If you are interested please contact

Local Sight Loss Charity receives £356,000 Big Lottery Grant The county’s leading sight loss charity, Northamptonshire Association for the Blind (NAB), is today celebrating being successful in gaining a £356,000 award from the Big Lottery Fund. The money comes from BIG’s Reaching Communities programme, working across the coun-try to help improve the lives of disadvantaged people. Launched in 2012 with the support of £300,000 from the BIG Lottery Fund, this new funding helps secure Northamptonshire Association for the Blind’s (NAB) Enable Project, which help thousands of the county’s blind and partially sighted adults and children to live independently within the community and make the most of what life has to offer, for a further 3 years. It is estimated that there are over 19,000 people living with sight loss in Northamptonshire who could benefit from NAB’s Enable Project, which provides a range of complimentary ser-vices including Home Visits, Emotional Support, Advice on health, welfare, wellbeing, and coping with daily living tasks, Assistance with specialist aids, equipment and new technology, Interest and Social Groups across the county, Befriending and Sight Centres in both North-ampton and Kettering - plus a Mobile Sight Centre which travels the county. Alex Lohman, Chief Executive of NAB said: “This is really great news. The Enable Service costs £300,000 a year and this award, along with commitments made by local trusts as well as the continuing generosity and support of the people of Northamptonshire on whom we rely so much, goes a long way to securing the funding needed to keep this vital service going for at least another 3 years.” Lyn Cole, Big Lottery Fund England grant making director said: “So many local community organisations are enabling people and communities to grow together bringing positive changes to their lives and futures. It’s wonderful to hear the stories of how through these great projects people have overcome barriers, learned new skills and improved their lives.” Today’s awards have been made through the Big Lottery Fund’s Awards for All and Reaching Communities programmes. Awards for All provides grants between £300 and £10,000 to vol-untary and community organisations and Reaching Communities awards larger grants of £10,000 and above. GARDENER’S CORNER by Alistair Peak
SEPTEMBER 2016
With late summer here and harvest well on the way, we can only hope that
we see an Indian Summer, it is such a special time of year that brings that special smell of autumn. This is the time of year that dahlias are at their best (these have always been a favourite of mine), there are many shades of reds, oranges yellows, purples, crimsons, white and even two tone colours. These are good vibrant colours, which can be accentuated by the autumn colours just arriving. These tuberous rooted perennials will – by continual dead heading, continue to flower right up to the first frost and are great for flower arranging. They are wonderful plants, you can get many different types of dahlias, from large decorative types to small bedding varieties so if you haven’t much room, think about next years planting, they can include some pots with bedding varieties in the planting scheme. Remember to include single headed varieties for the insects and that the tubers need to be over wintered in a frost free environment. The tender pot plants have enjoyed their holiday outside you will soon need to return them back indoors. The late flowering, potted up chrysanthemums also need to be brought in. Should we get a warm September, remember to give the greenhouse some ventilation as they soon heat up.
There are many colours of Buxus including green, golden and variegated suitable for hedges, topiary and planting in open or shady shrubberies. If you are lucky to have Box Hedge or Topiary and you trimmed them in June, they will have made more growth and now is the time to give them another trim. This will give them a tight finish for the winter, producing great structure for the winter period, especially in the frost and fog with the winter sun throwing new light on them.
Gardener’s Tip:
Spring is only five months away, that must mean the garden centres and nurseries are now selling BULBS. Get down as soon as possible to ensure your
favourites and sound strong bulbs.
