Hanging Around Harrogate: An account of the Gardening Society’s Visit to Yorkshire Friday 19th June: First Stop: Barnsdale in Rutland
This was a series of gardens uniquely designed for television by Geoffrey Hamilton. There was no organic unity because
each garden created its own criteria dependent on its theme. Visitors’ notebooks and cameras were much in evidence. It
was also a place of nostalgia: the Rose Garden and the Artisan’s Cottage Garden for me, and for many others, memories of
the gardens ‘as seen on telly’.
Saturday 20th June: Newby Hall
This is a magnificent 18th Century building, set in a huge estate. The House had almost an embarrassment of riches. I walked
round Sylvia’s Garden, dedicated to the mother of the present owner. It was at its best with its rising flowers in whites,
pinks, purples and blues. As well as admiring Europe’s longest double herbaceous border, we admired the Water Garden
with its wonderful primulas and the White Garden with silver foliage and plants specially chosen to shed their dying petals
on the ground because, as the gardener said, ‘Nothing looks worse than white flowers fading brown’. There was an
excellent restaurant and art centre, a steam train chugging along the riverbank and a water Tarantella for the children to
challenge. The artistic, historical and commercial fused appropriately.
The afternoon was spent at Littlethorpe Manor, Ripon. These exceptional gardens have been designed and
developed by Head Gardener, Eddie Harland, with the four acres of formal gardens and lawns around the house surrounded
by extensive parkland and a lake. This is a fine family garden, full of personal touches that reflected the contemporary tastes
of the owners, Mr and Mrs Thackray. The Walled Garden was a particular delight, but the Sunken Garden, Fountain Lawn
and Lake were impressive if only for the landscaping involved
Sunday 21st June: First stop: Norton Conyers, near Ripon.
This was delightfully laid back. The owners, Sir James and Lady Graham, are charmingly informal and modest about the
enchantment created. Laid out in the mid-18th century, this large and magical walled garden has a central Orangery, an
ornamental pond, magnificent herbaceous borders and parkland beyond
Next stop, Scampston, was entirely different. This is a unique and meticulously controlled walled garden designed by Piet
Oudolf. It is an impressive plantsman’s paradise.
Our last stop of the day was Jackson’s Wold. This family garden has been evolving since 1984 when owners, Richard
and Sarah Cundall, moved into the farm house. Designed to relate harmoniously with the surrounding countryside, the
garden is a wonderful testimony to the owners, with some unusual plants and innovative planting schemes. I treasure
memories of the wild flower garden and the sweeping views across the Vale of Pickering down to the sea at Scarborough
and Filey.
Monday 22nd June: The Journey Home. Harlow Carr. I sought out significantly placed seats to analyse the reasons
for their siting. Sometimes it was a point of convergence, sometimes an opening out of vistas. Sometimes it was a sinuous
line of planting and sometimes swathes of colours merging and contrasting. One personal note: I saw Diarmuid Gavin’s
modern garden soon after it was presented here. It now seems somehow disappointedly locked into its own limited time-
frame and already looking dated; whereas the gardens at Newby and Norton Conyers remain refreshingly stimulating after
many centuries.
The final stop of the holiday was at York Gate Garden. The rains came and some of the surfaces were slippery. So,
after a circuit to get the flavour, I made my excuses and left. I noted that the one acre garden was divided into a series of
smaller gardens with different themes and in contrasting styles. Motifs from the Arts and Craft Movement featured strongly,
and a member of our party described it as “one of the most innovative small gardens in the world.”
So, we returned to Elham, appreciative of the hard, preparatory work done by Hugh and the committee, and aware of the
horticultural tensions between working flexibly with nature and imposing rigidly controlled patterns on a landscape. As a
result, gardens in Elham will continue to reflect the beneficial Yorkshire influence when the plants brought home develop
local roots.

ATTENTION HORSE RIDERS
I am delighted to report that the three
gates on the Bridleway leading from Exted
Farm across the fields to the Byeway to
Upper Park Gate Farm have now been rehung. You
should be able to open the gates whilst still mounted,
do enjoy this bridleway which, although short, goes
through some lovely fields and is a valuable link to the
Byeway.
Many thanks to Chris Jelly and his band of volunteers
for completing this work.

SIR JOHN WILLIAMS TRUST
FURTHER EDUCATION GRANTS
This is the time of the year when some young people of
the Parish look forward to a new experience away from
home as they embark on their chosen course of further
education at college or university. This is a time when
funds can be stretched in setting up courses with books
and equipment that are necessary to ensure a smooth
learning experience. A grant, however small, can be put
to good use and perhaps allow the purchase of books or
equipment previously seen as beyond available funds.
The Sir John Williams Trust may be able to help, and
you can apply in the following manner:
Please supply curriculum vitae together with full details
of the course of studies to be followed, degree or
qualification being sought and the establishment being
attended, plus any other information you consider useful
to the Trust in assessing your application. The
application letter must be endorsed by a parent or
guardian. For repeat applications for a grant, ie further
years of study where a previous grant has been given, it
will be necessary to provide a report of the previous
year’s studies in detail, together with any achievements
and exam results and how these will satisfy the overall
course objective. Any repeat application will require a
CV if not already supplied, and a parent or guardian
endorsement indicating the accuracy of the application.
The Trust will meet in early October 2015 to consider
applications. This is the main grant meeting of the year
when the Trust expects to make the bulk of its grants
within its budget. Applications received after the meeting
will be considered at the next Trust meeting and will be
dependent upon available funds. The Trust is not bound
to make a grant and cannot do so until it is satisfied that
the application or applicant is within its remit and the
Trust Scheme.
Applications should be sent to the Clerk to the
Trustees, Mr K H London, Sir John Williams Trust, 17
Fairfield, Elham CT4 6UP by 25 September 2015. Please
do not hesitate to telephone for further advice at 01303
840440. PAST APPLICANTS PLEASE NOTE NEW
ADDRESS FOR REPEAT APPLICATIONS.

Royal Veterinary College, Animal Care Trust (ACT) Sponsored Walk 7 June 2015
The walk took place on the private estate of Gorhambury House in St Albans on a fine sunny day; the weather
was glorious! It was 5.5 miles in length and mostly off road through fields of livestock and wild flowers, the
scenery was lovely with a wonderful view of the house. There are some photos on my fundraising page:
http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/RosalindBrewer and I have posted the whole collection on Facebook.
It was a good day all round and with the help of sponsors and Gift Aid, to date my walk has raised a total of
£272.50 for the ACT which is fantastic! Hopefully, promotion of the walk has also helped to raise the profile of
the Animal Care Trust as well. Fundraising is on an ongoing basis and if you are interested in finding out more
about the ACT have a look at their website www.rvc.ac.uk/act.
I just want to take this opportunity to say a big ‘Thank You’ to all my supporters, your help has been very much
appreciated by me and the ACT.
Ros Brewer
With such a dry and cold spell beforehand (apart from the 2 inches of rain on the previous night), I wondered what
sort of Show we would see. The exhibitors surprised and delighted me with the colour and profusion of their
entries, and such a high standard, according to the judges.
1995 was my first Show, and this was my last as Show Secretary, and I have enjoyed almost every minute. Fresh
eyes and new ideas are long overdue, and I wish my successors, Carole and Claire, all the very best in their task.
My thanks to the Society for the gifts of flowers, bubbly and a beautiful bench – quite overwhelming. Last of all,
thank you to every single person who has entered and supported the Show, especially my assistant!
I couldn’t have done it without you all.

Travel tips for transporting your cat to the vets
Travelling to the vet can be an anxious experience for your cat. At Bourne Veterinary Practice, we want your cat’s
visit to be as stress-free as possible. Here are some tips to reduce the stress of travelling to the surgery:
Choose your cat carrier/basket carefully. There are many different types of carrier available and it is worth in-
vesting in a well-made one which will last, as your cat should make at least one trip per year to the surgery for
an annual health check and vaccination.
A basket that can be opened from the top and has a side opening too, is ideal. This means the top can be re-
moved, leaving your cat in the base of the box to be examined. A side opening/door front also means that your
cat can willingly enter the carrier.
Leave the basket out at home so your cat sees it regularly. It is a good idea to put treats and a familiar blanket
or towel in there as this will make your cat feel more secure and reassured. Over time, you may actually find
your cat will then use the carrier as one of his regular beds. Be patient!
If you need to bring your cat to the surgery and he is not yet accustomed to his carrier, then place it in a quiet
room without too many hiding places, and encourage your cat to go into the carrier with some treats. If this is
not successful, gently pick your cat up and place in the basket if it is a top-opening carrier. Some cats prefer to
go in through the door bottom first i.e. reverse, so try this if you have a door-opening carrier.
If your cat panics at the sight of the carrier, use a thick towel or blanket to wrap the cat in and place both cat
and towel in the carrier quickly and carefully.
The use of a facial pheromone spray (FeliwayTM) in the carrier can also help reduce stress and anxiety. Spray
the four corners of the carrier about 15-30 minutes before you need to use it (the cat should not be in the
carrier when you do this). The time allows the alcohol in the spray to evaporate and for the pheromone to
diffuse in the carrier. FeliwayTM is available over the counter from the surgery.
Secure the carrier in the car with a seatbelt, avoiding the front seat if there is an airbag. Avoid playing loud mu-
sic and drive smoothly. Your cat will pick up on your stress, so try to keep calm.
It is a good idea to place a towel or blanket over the carrier when carrying it to and from the car and in the
surgery. Bringing spare bedding is also useful in case your cat has any little accidents during the journey.
When you arrive at the surgery, if you would prefer to wait in the car with your cat then pop into the waiting
room and let the receptionist know this and which car you are in. Alternatively, we have a designated cat wait-
ing area to the right of the reception desk. Please feel free to place your carrier up off the floor on to the seat.
We will also be happy to provide you with a towel or blanket to pop over your carrier, so your cat feels more
secure, away from waffling doggy noses if they come past!
Taking your cat on short car rides that do not involve a trip to the vets also helps to reduce negative associations
with both the carrier and the car.
On the 16th September Alan Haines is presenting ‘A Kick up the Sixties’. Visitors will be warmly welcomed and
we meet at Rhodes Minnis Village Hall at 7.30pm. On the 24th October we are holding a Coffee Morning for
Children in Need at the Tayne Centre from 10.00 to 12.00. There will be a cake stall, tombola and other
attractions - come and support this worthwhile children's charity. For further details please contact Diana
Bennett on 01303 862134.

Thank you to everyone that helped at our Volunteer Gardening Session at the King George V Play Park in
July. I hope everyone agrees that the park is looking lovely at the moment, the lilies were a wonderful
annual delight. Just a quick reminder for people to please take soiled nappies home as the bin is situated in
the picnic area. We hope to be able to install a new litter bin shortly to ensure they don't overflow at
busy times.
Upcoming Events:
Wednesday 9 September: Mum’s Night Out. Meet at the Rose & Crown, 7.30pm
Sunday 4 October: Chuck Out Your Chintz clothes/textile collection. Please hang on to your
old togs as we can make money from them. Further details will follow in the next newsletter.
Saturday 31 October is the date for our Annual Spooky Halloween Parade.
Please keep an eye out for further information regarding the dates and activities on notices at the park
and around the village, as well as the Play for Elham website (www.playforelham.co.uk).
To get involved or offer ideas/help/donations please email [email protected] or [email protected], or call Briony 840083 or Emma 840447.
ELHAM PARISH COUNCIL We would like to wish The Bakers well in their move 'up North'. Richard and Kate did a huge amount of voluntary work for
the community and will be sorely missed. Kate spent many an hour helping with Play for Elham fundraising and was key in
helping get the King George V play area up and running. Richard and Kate started the Elham Football Club up and got
it affiliated with the FA, for both adults and juniors. Unfortunately without any volunteers at present to take over, the football
clubs have had to close. John Palmer has kindly agreed for the land down at The Gore to remain in use by the community, it is
an excellent quality flat pitch and we have junior football kit and full size goal posts etc, facilities at the old cricket pavilion. If
anyone is interested in running either or both of the football clubs please do get in touch with the Parish Council Clerk (details
on the rear of this newsletter). Meanwhile, the land will remain open for use by the community for casual football and other
activities. We are currently looking into a new grass cutting contract.

The results of the speed survey came through in time for me to report them to the parish council meeting in July. The survey
found that the 30mph speed limit through Elham was generally respected. At the Canterbury end of the village the mean speed
was 23.4 mph north bound and 22.5 mph south bound, in the centre of the village, north bound was 20.4 mph and south
bound 21.3 mph. At the Lyminge end of the village (near the triangle) the north bound mean speed was 31.3mph and south
bound was 28.9 mph. Kent Highways also looked at this last site for the speeds between 8am and 9am on school days when it
was 29.6mph and between 2pm and 3 pm when it was 28.1mph. This does not mean there was no speeding but it does not
show a general problem and Kent Highways are clear that it does not warrant any changes to the road.
I was away for the August parish council meeting but sent a report on Operation Stack which has caused enormous problems
and is now being treated as a national emergency. By the time you read this report it is likely that a series of measures funded
by central government will be announced. The extension of the Stop 24 lorry park at junction 10 of the M20 is a certainty and
could provide an extra 1,000 spaces within 18 months. It would be on low grade agricultural land between the M20 and the
railway line and if we must have lorry parking seems the least bad option. KCC is also having to deal with a large rise in the
numbers of Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children with 605 in our care at the end of July. The extra costs are estimated as
£5.5m a year but even more serious is the strain these extra numbers put on our public services.
Sadly the Government has postponed till 2020 the introduction of the cap on care costs that was due to come in from next
April as part of measures to balance the nation’s finances. Local government continues to take a very large share of the reduc-
tions in public expenditure and much of my work for you at KCC is involved in getting our budget to balance - it gets harder
every year. We expect to go out to consultation on the 2016/17 budget this autumn and hope you will take the time to re-
spond.
I know many people are desperate for better broadband services and I had hoped the plans for the superfast extension pro-
gramme would be on the KCC website by now. KCC’s broadband team have given BT’s plans a very thorough review to make
sure we maximise the number of households reached for our investment and this has delayed the appearance of the plans till
the end of September. The programme start date remains unchanged and should be under way at the end of December.

We would like to welcome all our pupils and families back to the start of Term One, and a very special welcome to all our
new families who are joining our school this year.
At Elham we have had a very successful year. We are assessed each year and our data is compared to previous years and
against other schools locally and nationally and then the results will be published when we return in the next academic year.
We have done very well this year and I want to share this with you:-
We had an amazing Multicultural Week filled with fun and activities. Our Summer Fete was an outstanding success! Our

families made it simply amazing.
Our Team Shield was won by the BLUE TEAM.
The Boys Cup was won by Charlie Brown
The Girls Cup was won by Cerys Price
The Danny Norton Football Cup was won by Joe Penny
The Sportsmanship Cup was won by Tom Coward
We have been competing in many sporting events out of school and have made our way to several county finals where we
have done ourselves proud.

Christmas Food & Craft Festival
For the first time we entered a float in the Venetian Fete on 19 August; our set builders expertly crafted
the float and eight members donned costumes from Alice in Wonderland and A Midsummer Night's
Dream. A very successful evening was had by all.
On a less successful note we were unable to cast Dial M for Murder due to a lack of available men in
their thirties and forties. If you are in this category (or any other age or gender group!) and would like to
join the Society please contact Alex on 01303 862622. If you have a spare moment grab a cuppa and
browse our website: lymingedramaticsociety.co.uk.
Watch this space as we are currently deliberating and planning our Autumn/ Winter Production to fill the
gap left by Dial M. There definitely will be a production- more details to follow in subsequent newsletters.

There is quite a lot of catching up this month!
On 25 June we escaped from the Hall and paid an evening visit to the Old Bladbean Stud. The weather was
lovely and we were all enchanted by the colours and scents of this interesting garden. The Rose Garden, in
particular, was a real joy with about one hundred bush and climbing roses in bloom. We were escorted by the
owner who told us about the establishment of the garden and also her philosophy for managing the property.
On 16 July Susan Scrivens gave us a very comprehensive talk on container gardening – she made it all look so
easy. She advised on the siting of plants in the containers for the most striking effects, and also showed pictures
of a bewildering selection of containers which could be used for plants.
25 July brought us once again to the Annual Show. As ever, a year of uneven weather brought worries about
the number of entries but the members came up trumps and the Hall was filled with the glorious aroma of
flowers, fruit and vegetables and, of course, edible goodies. After the prize giving an extra presentation was
made to Fizz Martin who has been Show Secretary for twenty years and is now standing down, and to Doug
who has been her wonderful right hand man throughout these years. Happily they are remaining on the
committee (too valuable to lose) and the job of Show Secretary has been taken over by Claire Donnelly and
Carole Kincaid.
A date for your diary: The Annual Dinner will be held on 7 November. Tickets will be on sale at the Autumn
Coffee Morning on 3 October. Please make a note of both these dates.
Bookings are now being taken for next June’s trip to Normandy, do speak to Hugh Buckhurst on 840347 if you
are interested.
The speaker at the meeting on 17 September will be Stephen Morris and the subject is Spring Bulbs. We look
forward to seeing you there.
Meetings are held in the Peggy Pike room of the Village Hall at 7.30pm. New members and friends are always
welcome.
