BIKE WITH INDY SKI CLUB - Ray Battey

Late July…. Had a really nice 23ish mile ride from Broad Ripple Brew Pub to Fountain Square via Monon then back to BR on White River greenway & central canal towpath. It was getting pretty hot by the end of the ride. Many of us stayed to brunch in the shade at Monon Food Company. Photo was taken at the Eitel-jorg Museum….. Noli. (To ride with the club any Saturday until the snow flies, including more rides on the Cardinal Greenway, contact Ray at [email protected] )

A member of Indy Ski Club can participate with other member ski clubs in OVSC. Of course, we prefer that you ski with Indy, but if our timing does not work for you, take a look at OVSC clubs….. OVSC (the council itself) is going to Big Sky, MT and Nisei, Japan in 2017…. More info at www.ovsc.org/tripsevents/ and http://www.ovsc.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/OVSC-Trips-2015-16.pdf

VVVView from the Skyiew from the Skyiew from the Skyiew from the Sky---- by Mel Crichton, SchuuBoomer editorby Mel Crichton, SchuuBoomer editorby Mel Crichton, SchuuBoomer editorby Mel Crichton, SchuuBoomer editor

Living in the mountains sounds idyllic. That is, if your idea of idyllic is August frost, June snow, dry skin, crowds of summer tourists, higher cost of living, intense summer sun, and rarely, winter temperatures as low as minus 40 (it doesn’t matter whether it’s Centigrade or Fahrenheit… they are the same at -40) . Yes, there are a few setbacks to living at 6300 feet, but on the plus side, we are below the 7500 foot threshold for altitude sickness, and our long sunny summer days are low humidity and maybe 80 degrees F. So we get lots of visitors from the flatlands up here. They flock here for the incredible views, the great uncrowded skiing, good restaurants and bars, Yellowstone, and the laid-back lifestyle. I guess that’s good.

But...like many ski towns, Big Sky is currently dealing with a housing shortage. The billionaires and celebrities behind the gates on the slopes above us are building more homes…. We call them “10-10-2-2 homes”… 10 thousand square feet, ten million dollars, 2 people, for 2 weeks a year. No, the real shortage is housing for common folks, people who come here for the moun-tain lifestyle but can’t afford to rent or buy a home. These people wait tables, cook your food, sell sporting goods, run the lifts, patrol the slopes, guide rafts down the river, perform music, and even fight fires and patrol the highways, most for close to minimum wage. Many service businesses are cutting back because they can’t find workers who can afford to fill them. So…. if you’re out west for just a week of skiing, remember to tip your servers well, as they likely are having a tough time making ends meet while sharing a 3 bedroom condo with nine other people. But they are mostly resilient younger folks, and loving it.

If the mountain lifestyle interests you, and you have a motor home or a tent to live in, come on out! Jobs are waiting !!!

President Ann’s Corner by Ann Daniel As promised in the last Schussboomer, I want to pass on some informa-tion I gleaned from the OVSC Summit in June. A presentation that I found interesting was about packing and traveling simply (which Mel has been promoting for some time... but did I listen? - not really!) Tricks of the trade: a 21-inch carry-on for clothing and toiletries is all you need to take, no matter the length of the trip. Wear synthetic clothing, wash some clothes every night, and use a stretchy clothes line. You can use packing cubes to combine smaller items and simplify organi-zation. This bag can be stored in the overhead bin or under the seat on the plane. Use a wide, soft-sided ski bag for your ski equipment, and pack sweaters, helmet, etc. in also. With your ski bag, this is your “one piece” of luggage to check in, so you may not have an extra baggage fee, depending on the airline. A website for checklists and additional tips: www.ricksteves.com. My other most helpful take-away was about recruiting new, and especially younger, members. The presentation was by a marketing director from Holiday Valley near Buffalo, NY. Her suggestions were similar to those I was given by our own Alissa Russ who I met on the Park City trip in March. Among several good ideas about marketing and providing a good trip ex-perience, the main point they both made is that not everyone who might want to join the club has the time and money for a week-long trip. Shorter trips closer to home are more likely to interest them, as well as using Facebook to reach them. This topic will be discussed by the Board at our next meeting Aug. 27. I look forward to seeing you all at the September 18 sign-up picnic!
