You may have noticed that this issue took a bit longer than usual to release, which was due to a number of things happening behind the scenes. I apologise for any inconvenience caused, and next issue is set to be released at the usual time.

We have some lovely profiles this issue, including a gorgeous and multi-talented Malleegrove Mandalla, a purebred Arabian, and also the absolutely adorable Heartthrob Prince of Thieves, who with his young rider Mikayla is taking the pony rings by storm.

This issue we feature one of my favourite breeds, the Arabian Pony and Arabian Derivatives. The Arabian horse contributes such beauty and pizzazz to the pony breeds, one can not help but admire their tenacity and courage. We have some beautiful pic-tures to accompany our articles and I would like to thank all of our readers who sent these in for inclusion.

We also have a Christmas gift ideas special at the end of the maga-zine, where you will find some great ideas for the pony-lover. This special feature will also be carried over to next issue so if you are interested in being featured there is still time.

The Arabian Pony and Arabian Riding Pony

The Arabian Pony and Arabian Riding Pony are charming little characters. With their tiny, sculpted ears, large, expressive eyes and big flaring nostrils, one can not help but fall in love. These ponies combine the sturdiness and loving characteristics of a pony with the pizzazz and presence of the Arabian and can be found in many disciplines.

People have been crossing Arabians with ponies for as long as the two breeds co-existed. The Arabian horse was used to improve most of the modern breeds, and this included our native pony breeds. They added stamina and agility, important for working horses, and beauty and refinement, much sought after in the show ring. In modern times, the usefulness of Arabian blood is still appreciated for the fine qualities it can bring to the gene pool.

produce highly skilled sport ponies, pony club mounts, dressage ponies and show ponies. In Australia ponies of Arabian and pony parentage may be registered as Arabian Ponies, most of which are a blend of Arabian and either Australian Pony or Welsh blood. Ponies with Arabian blood are also known for their stamina, they are able to go all day and also give young riders the opportunity to try their hands at such disciplines as endurance or competitive trail riding. Ponies with Arabian breeding can also be registered with such registries as the Australian Stud Saddle Pony Association, or the Australian Sports Pony Registry. In America there is a registry that deals with Arabian Ponies crossed with Welsh Ponies known as the Welara Registry and this particular cross is also quite common in Australia, with some of our Australian stock registered in this American registry. Arabian Riding Ponies are registered with the Arabian Horse Stud Book or the Riding Pony Stud Book and are highly sought after as show ponies, combining the refined beauty of the Riding Pony with the movement and pizazz of the Arabian.

The Arabian Pony and Arabian Riding Pony can be found competing in all disciplines; they make great children’s ponies, be-ing brave jumpers and game ponies, and lovable and loyal companions. These ponies stand out in the show ring, with their beautiful large eyes and tiny ears. One of the most well-known Arabian Ponies in Australia would have to be the gorgeous stallion Trincada Strike, who has won multiple Australian Championships in halter, under saddle and in harness (see our launch issue, June 2014 for his feature). Strike is of Welsh and Arabian parentage and has sired numerous champions. Another well-known Arabian Pony was Avondale Thumbelina, who was a highly successful harness pony and has produced some top Arabian Pony progeny, including Australian Champion in Harness Cool Breeze Charm (by Trincada Strike) and a number of successful high percentage Arabian Ponies for Mulawa Arabian Stud.

Arabian blood is very prevalent in the British and Australian Riding Pony gene pools. The beauty and look-at-me presence of the Arabian has served this developed breed well in producing a pony that excels in the show ring. Some are suitable for younger riders, being loyal and kind, while others may showcase some of the Arabian ‘hotness’ and are best navigated by more experienced riders. This breed can also be seen in Pony Club and all of its associated disciplines, being agile and resilient.

If you are looking for a beautiful, loyal companion who can go all day, you can not look past an Arabian Pony or Arabian Riding Pony, particularly if you want to stand out in the show ring.

BLANKETING STUDY A HOAX

You may have read results from a supposed study done at Colorado State Univesitty that claims that horses should not wear rugs in winter. The study claims to have used thermal detection equipment and to have been conducted over several years.

While this article caused much of a stir, being a few years old but resurfacing just recently on such social media platforms as Facebook, it turns out that there never was such a study done. The entire article is a hoax! Spokespeople at CSU have no idea where the article originated from, they just know that they did not conduct such a study.

DEINHARD B PASSES AWAY

Germany’s number one FEI Pony Deinhard B was sadly laid to rest on 27th October 2015 after a relapse following colic surgery. Deinhard B (Dornik B x Gwenduline B, by Golden Dancer) was a 16 year old German Riding Pony stallion who had a stellar career in the Pony Dressage arena.

He was European Pony Champion in 2005, following this up being named European Pony Champion in 2008 (with a different rider). In 2013 Deinhard B was European Reserve Pony Cham-pion and then European Pony Champion again in 2014. In 2013 at Hagan with his young rider Semmieke Rothenberger, Deinhard B broke world records when the pair became the first pony combi-nation to achieve over 80%.

~ SUMMER RUG GUIDE~


Horse and pony owners rug their horses in Summer for a variety of reasons. It is often personal choice, though in some circum-

stances it is essential for protection. We take a look at some of the different range of rugs

suitable for the warmer weather.

WHY RUG IN SUMMER?Owners rug in Summer for a variety of reasons. Some people rug to prevent coat bleaching, which can occur in very hot weather, or to keep a dark coloured pony cooler in the heat. If your pony suffers from itch or some form of al-lergy or insect sensitivity it can be kinder to rug them for protection.

WHICH RUG? There is a variety of rugs available that are suitable for the Summer heat. In most cases they are light colours to help reflect the sun and heat and of lighter material. Lighter colours are also more successful in repelling insects.

Cotton ripstop rugs are the strongest and heaviest and are suitable for po-nies that are tough on their rugs and don’t tend to get too hot in the summer heat. They are best removed in extremely hot weather to prevent overheat-ing, but are a tougher option for ponies that are tough on their rugs and po-nies that suffer from itch and sensitivity as even the smallest insects can not get through the rug to bite. Cotton rugs also tend to be showerproof, so are handy for those summer rains as they don’t let the pony get too wet. In heavi-er rains though it may be required to put an unlined canvas or rainsheet on (depending on the heat), particularly if your pony is prone to rainscald. In this case it is important not to leave wet rugs on your pony, as the moisture and heat is the perfect breeding grounds for fungal infections.

Flag rugs are another option, they are lighter than ripstop rugs and so are cooler and allow better airflow but are not as strong and so not as well-suited to ponies that tend to break their rugs easily or may be suffering from a se-vere case of itch. Again the material does not allow any insects to get through to bite.

Mesh rugs are a popular choice in summer, as they are lightweight, cool and

keep the flies at bay. Mesh rugs come in different strengths and weaves, the higher the GSM (grams per square metre) rating, the better the strength of the material. If you are just looking for some protec-tion from the sun and flies, a lower GSM may suit you, however if you are looking for something for an itchy horse you will need a higher GSM for strength. Mesh rugs are available which are treated with insect repellent especially for itchy and sensitive horses and these tend to be very successful in preventing itch and al-lergies.

RUG OR COMBO?Again this is personal choice, some people like to have their ponies completely covered, while others may be happy with just a rug. Itchy and allergy-prone horses may re-quire a full combo with hood and ears to prevent insect attacks. If you do have a hood on a pony in a pad-dock (or a stable for that matter) it is highly recommended that you do not leave them unsupervised as they could possibly get it caught and pull it over their eyes. This can be disastrous and the pony could injure themselves. It is also of great importance that hoods fit properly and are snugly fitted so that they can not move around and cover the eyes.

There is quite a wide variety of rugs and combos available on the market now, with something to suit every owner and every budget. Before jumping in to buy it pays to shop around and consider what your needs and those of your pony are so that you can get it right the first time! Rugs can be quite an investment, and it is worthwhile looking for quality and trusted brands. If you are unsure of what size your pony is, it is recommended that you measure him or her. Be sure to only try new rugs on clean, dry ponies to ensure you do not ditry it.

Heartthrob Prince of Thieves and his young rider Mikayla are out flying the flag for the wonderful Arabian Riding Pony breed. Together they have won numerous sashes at local events and were also awarded Reserve Champion Rider Under 8 Years at Toowoomba Royal in 2013, Mikayla’s very first Royal Show, and following this up in 2014 with Champion Rider Under 8 Years.

Hearththrob Prince of Thieves, known as Prince at home, is a nine year old son of Rathowen Parody from the double Cool Hand Luke mare Arabenn Natural Style. Prince was bred by Emma Barkla of Heartthrob Arabians and had a successful in hand career as a youngster, which included Champion Arabian Riding Pony at the Gold Coast Show and Reserve Champion Arabian Riding Pony at Top of the Range, Queensland Challenge Show and Pan Pacific Arabain Show.

He was purchased by Natasha Symonds in 2012 for her daughter Mikayla.

Natasha broke Prince in herself and shortly after this Prince and Mikayla were competing in Leading Rein events, bringing home many broad sashes. Natasha says of their wins, “the most memorable was Mikayla being awarded Reserve Champion Rider Under 8 Years at her first ever Royal in 2013 at Toowoomba Royal and then going back in 2014 to claim Champion Rider Under 8 Years.”

“Prince is one of those once in a lifetime horses, he would have to be the most intelligent, cheeky horses I have ever worked with and we love him to bits,” she continues, “his bond with his little rider is just beautiful and I can’t wait to see them out in the show ring next year.”

Arreton Arabians is situated in the beautiful Barossa Valley in South Australia and is run by Jessie Rae Preece, John Preece and Caroline Payne. The stud breeds Arabians and Arabian Derivatives with an emphasis on promoting the Arabian as a performance horse.

The stud stallion at Arreton is the multi-talented Malleegrove Mandalla and they also have an up and coming young colt in the gorgeous Trincada Strike son Arreton Majnoun (ex. Kirrong Tuppara) who has been awarded his Champion in Halter in the AHSA Roll of Merit. Kirrong Tuppara (Levi x Bellbowrie Tuppence) has also this year produced a full sister to Majnoun who is just divine and so like her sire. Arreton Arabians also has a lovely mare line up, including Fairview Amira Shaklan who is on lease from Sue Williams of Trincada Stud and has produced for Jessie a beautiful filly by Sadik’s Psyche, and also a half sister to Malleegrove Mandalla in Malleegrove Maya (by El Shafie).

Jessie is excitedly awaiting her first foals by Malleegrove Mandalla which are due this year.

The Arabian breed are revered for their breathtaking beauty and look at me presence. However, what is not so well known to the general equine world is their remarkable ability and willingness as performance horses and ponies. The Arabian was bred in the desert as a warhorse, carrying their riders on raids and into battle and it was essential for them to be courageous and loyal to the end. These qualities have been passed on down the generations and are ever apparent in our modern breed.

Malleegrove Mandalla is a 14 year old purebred Arabian who is demonstrating the ability of the breed to excel across a number of disciplines. As well as being registered with the Arabian Horse Society of Australia (AHSA), he is also registered with the Australian Saddle Pony Registry (ASPR) with a First Premium Grading. Known affectionate as Manny at home, this 14.1 3/8 hh stallion is by Taywoona Qarim (Dynasty Qatama x Samiha) and from Maricol Narelle (Arabian Park Eqyptian Prince x Nejmat El Masaa (Imp UK)) and was bred in South Australia.

Manny’s current owner Jessie Preece purchased him from his breeder in 2012. From here Manny’s education continued under saddle and he was also broken to harness. With Jessie and her loyal team, Manny has been awarded many local and National Championships in Halter, Ridden, Side Saddle, Costume, Harness and Dressage. “Manny is just a dream to work with and

has collected quite a following of ‘non-Arabian’ people. He loves doing things and manages to attract people who love to help him succeed and prove himself. He blows away all the stereotypes, he’s done it all as an older horse, he’s a stallion and he’s an Arab!” Jessie says, “We like to remind people that he is not the exception to the rule, he is the norm! Arabians can do it all and do it well, plus they look good while doing it.”

At the prestigious Australian Arabian Championships in 2015, Manny was awarded Reserve Champion at Halter (non-Pro), Harness and Native Costume, and also achieved Top Tens in Dressage, Parade Costume and Ridden Stallion (non-Pro). He has also been awarded his Champion in the AHSA Role of Merit (ROM) in both Performance and Halter. In 2015 he was named SAARABS High Point Winner in Overall Purebred Halter Horse, Overall Ridden Purebred and Overall Performance Horse (Purebred and Derivative Combined).

Manny’s success owes very much to a team effort. “I have a few health issues so personally I show him in halter,” explains Jessie, “Team Manny consists of a number of dedicated people who do an amazing

job at showing Manny in their particular field of expertise.” Manny’s main rider and number one fan is Sally Gould-Hurst, who shows him under saddle, in costume and Dressage, “Watching them together is an absolute joy and they improve on something with every ride,” says Jessie. “Jackie Boyd is Manny’s main driver, with her attention to detail and level of experience she

squeezes the very best out of him with every drive.” Manny is ridden side saddle by Sam Taylor, who is described enthusiastically by Jessie as “another spectacular rider who always has a gorgeous smile.” Manny is also about to try his hand at the Endurance scene, under the guidance of experienced horsewoman Tracy Brandon. He completed his first training ride in August.

Manny’s first foals are due this season, “We are very excited about their impending arrival,” says Jessie, “Our main aim when breeding is to produce ‘doing horses.’ Horses with a user friendly temperament and the conformation and ability to do whatever their owners would like to do.” Jessie’s breeding program is very much based on performance and no doubt Manny will prove

himself a valuable addition.
