WHAT’S INSIDE:
Dear 4-H families and friends, What is a success you had in the 2012-2013 4-H year? Hancock 4-H has had many successes across the county. Our LEGO teams do a fantastic job and we will now have 6 LEGO teams for the coming year. Our Clover Kids program will probably be full for the coming year. Several of our livestock exhibitors won awards at the Iowa State Fair. Our trial year of the food stand was successful with a lot of business and more profit than years past. We had wonderful weather for our fair. We have tremendous volunteers who keep 4-H clubs active and exciting for members. What will our successes be for the new 4-H year? Be sure to get recognized for your efforts in 4-H. All 4-Hers can receive bronze, silver, or gold recognition in their project areas. Be sure to download the paperwork and get it turned back in to the Extension Office by October 4th. Read the article about Record Books & Recognition to learn about what to turn in, where to get the paperwork, and how to get recognized for your work. It is a new school year and a new 4-H year which means re-enrollment time. All 4-H members (including ASK 4-H clubs & LEGO clubs) and Clover Kids who were members last year and are joining a 4-H club again this year should complete the re-enrollment process online at iowa.4honline.com. This ensures that we have the most current health information, contact information, project sign-up, and club membership for our youth. Families completely new to 4-H should fill out paper enrollment forms and turn them into the office. Our 4-H Awards and recognition ceremony will be held Sunday, November 10th at 4:00pm in the Garner Hayfield Ventura High School Auditorium. Following the ceremony will be a meal and silent auction of the cakes from the cake decorating contest. Read the article to find out the cake contest themes and how else you can get involved during the 4-H Awards and recognition day. All the best,

APPLY FOR COUNTY COUNCIL
7-12 Grade Leadership Opportunity
All 4-Hers in grades 7-12 have the opportunity to serve on a County Youth Council. As a council member you will get to help with county wide service projects, provide input of the direction of the 4-H program, speak on the radio, and much more. Being on County Council is a wonderful opportunity to make a difference in the 4-H program. You can learn life skills. You will be looked up to by younger 4-H members. It is an excellent addition to your resume and college applications.
High school members must submit an application and complete an interview on October 27th. High school members have the option to compete for the executive committee within county council. 7-8th grader must submit an application. Both groups will meet approximately 8-10 times a year. Additional information and applications can be found online at www.extension.iastate.edu/hancock/news/county-4-h-council-applications
Save the date: Sunday, November 10th, 2013. The 4-H Awards Program will be from 4-5:30 pm at the GHV Auditorium with a meal to follow. The awards program will feature similar activities to last year. Cake decorating contest & silent auction Class Themes: 4-H Adventure Sharing Compassion Contest is open to ANYONE. Decorate a cake (or cupcakes, pie, etc.) following either theme above. Items will be auctioned off through the silent auction. Proceeds will go to Hancock 4-H & a TBD charity. More details will be emailed to 4-Hers and put in newspaper. “Highlight YOUR 4-H” Share-The-Fun 3 minute max performances. Five will be selected. Send your application to the Extension Office by Nov. 1st. Use creativity in your application. Make a video, write-up your idea on a napkin, bring your group in and perform. We don’t care, we just want to see your ideas.
Most 4-Hers Contest Clubs are in a competition! Which Hancock County 4-H club can have the highest percentage of club members present? Winning club will get a pizza party! Last year the challenge was won by Orthel Jolly Workers who had 55% attendance by their club members. A challenge: Wear a 4-H shirt. 4-H Meal Immediately following the awards program we will have a 4-H family meal. All 4-H families are invited as well as extended family, businesses, city and county officials. Everyone but your dog (sorry).

SHOWING YOUR PROJECTS
There are 3 main categories where 4-Hers can receive awards.
1. Bronze, Silver, or Gold project record completion
Project record completion awards are not competitive. If you meet the requirements found on the “Project Record Completion Application” you will receive a bronze, silver, or gold; depending on which level you applied for. You must also submit your records related to that project. These records can be submitted in many forms: in a book with all your 4-H pro-jects, in a binder (or other method of filing) related to just that project area, or a video or other electronic document. 2. Competitive Life Skills awards
These awards can only be won once during each age division of 4-H (Jr. 4-6th grade, Int. 7-8 grade, Sr. 9-12 grade). They are judged exclusively on the award applications. You do not need to turn in a record book. Record books will not be refer-enced when judging applications. For Jr. and Int. members these would be the citizenship and leadership awards. For Sr. this would be the citizenship, leadership, ag & livestock achievement awards, merit, and Danforth “I Dare You.
3. Competitive Record keeping & accomplishments awards
These awards can only be won once during each age division of 4-H (or age category depending on the award). You must turn in an application as well as your entire collection of 4-H records. The award selection is competitive and will be judged based on your application, record book, and any other supporting material the specific award asks for. These awards are: Wendy Greiman Achievement award & Bock Memorial Scholarship. There are also awards for leaders to fill out:
Nomination awards for 4-Hers, awards for the club to win, nominations of outstanding volunteers. Leader nominated awards are due October 18th. All record keeping forms can be found on our website, www.extension.iastate.edu/hancock/4h_records_awards Many of the forms are writable word documents.
