Replacement of Benwick Footbridge

Some of you may be aware that there are currently plans to replace the Footbridge, however

there has been a lack of details pub-licised about this; hopefully this will help ensure everyone knows what is happening.

Cambridgeshire County Council are re-sponsible for the upkeep of over 1200 bridges across the county, and the condition of these bridges are moni-tored every two years. In 2011 the inspection of Benwick Bridge showed that significant remedial works were required; but after further investiga-tion it was decided that the best long term solution would be to replace the bridge through Cambridgeshire High-ways.

The bridge was originally built in the 1850s as a cart bridge, and was modi-fied to take only pedestrian traffic much later. Through discussions with the Parish Council, CCC and Cambs Highways it was decided to construct a new bridge reminiscent of the original structure. It will be 3m wide, and still a pedestrian only bridge.

It will be constructed with a series of Steel beams rather than the current

large timbers, and clad in Timber to acheive a more attractive and sympa-thetic appearance. The design of the Bridge was based on historical photo-graphs, and large oak parapets will be crafted, alongside a planked decking. The original abutments will remain untouched barring a few minor repairs - the new bridge will sit on concrete piled foundations behind the current abutments.

Work is expected to begin in Janu-ary 2013, and will last for around 4-6 weeks. Both the footpath and the river navigation will be closed for the dura-tion of works.

The first phase will be to build two concrete bank seats on piles to found the new footbridge and tie back and stabalise the old timber/stone abut-ments and wing walls.

The old footbridge will be sawn up and removed from site with the new foot-bridge either being craned in all in one piece or built in seperate modules.

From the Archives

This feature contains articles from The Cambs Times archives about Benwick.

New Light 15/11/1912 Messrs Pilgrim and Son of March have installed an acetylene plant at Mr. JW Selby’s shop which is a decided improvement on the discarded oil lamps. Mr Selby has at present eight burners in use, but as the generator is capable of serving twenty lights there is a probability of its extension to the house and other parts of the premises in the new future.

Accident Averted 18/02/1927 A motorist had a narrow escape near the Bridge on Sunday evening about 7-30. George Riches of the Council Houses was driving his car along the High Street to the Bridge in the direc-tion of Whittlesey. The fog was very thick with a consequence he missed the road and ran down an incline near the bridge to the water’s edge. He quickly discovered his mistake and twisted the car averting what might have been a serious incident.

Dangerous Waterway 09/11/1928 The recent dredging of the Nene through the village has made the

waterway a most dangerous place for cattle grazing on the banks or passing along the roads adjoining the river. The last occurrence happened last Saturday afternoon. A motor vehicle startled the animals with the result that a young horse was pushed into the river. After remaining in the wa-ter for about an hour and swimming practically a mile, the willing band of workmen who had assembled man-aged to lasso it and drag it to the side, where it was rescued. Theft of a Jacket 02/11/1928 A special police court was held in Chatteris on Monday to investigate a charge of theiving a cardigan hacket at the George Hotel, Benwick on Satur-day. Accused was Mr. George Holland who gave his address as Bognor, near Barnsley. Accused pleaded Guilty, and said he was “in drink”. PC Donald said that at about 8:30pm on Saturday he recieved information from Michael Delvin that a cardigan jacket had been stolen from The George Hotel, Ben-wick. It was valued at 6s.

Six former Explorer Scouts, includ-ing some from Benwick recently took to the sea crewing a 49ft

sailing ship, The Ocean Scout around Europe. Twins Edward and Alistair Glen, Giovanni Fiore, all 15, Philip Taylor, 20 all of Benwick along with James Knott and Caleb Adaway all sailed with Ad-ventures offshore and left the UK from Ipswich, visiting Netherlands, Belgium and France, before returning to the

UK at Eastborne. Rod Glen explained, “The ship has a skipper and two mates, and the six lads will have to do all the work, from cooking to sailing the boat. They had some training on the first day, and then they set sail.” Half the funds for the trip came from Norfolk Boat, a charity that promotes sailing for young people, and other donations came from Wisbech Round Table and Lord de Ramsey.

Rod added: “When they return, the lads will put together a presentation, to show their backers.” Article courtesy of the Fenland Citizen

Yvonne Peace, ‘The Sculpture Lady’ runs Kisdon Sculpture, and is currently preparing for an

exhibition in November.

“Growing up in Yorkshire I was always drawn to the creativity that nature naturally produces. The trees and the landscape at Kisdon waterfall inspired me to express myself, with my adora-tion of wood - sculpting was my call-ing” says Yvonne.

She works with weathered and re-claimed wood hand carving and creat-ing unique sculptures which reflect nature, and the Yorkshire countryside that inspired her as a child.

Yvonne describes the art of sculpting as “one of patience”, with some pieces taking between 2 and 4 months to complete.

“In the summer months I am particu-larly busy exhibiting along with any individual commissions, meaning that the studio at Kisdon house can be-come a busy abode.”

Every piece of artwork is handcrafted with the Kisdon Trademark, making

As introduced in the last Bugle, this new feature focuses on local business in the village. If you run your own business, work from home, even if it’s just something on the side - let me know and you can feature your business here!

every piece unique.

As well as wood sculpture, she also works with Resin, Textiles and Plas-ter. “Having left Yorkshire many years ago with my Husband and two young children I found that life was offering me new inspirations along the way. This is reflected in the branching out of my portfolio of sculptures to include abstract wood and resin pieces.”

Yvonne is currently preparing for an Exhibition at Stamford Arts Centre from 30th October to 10th November. For an exclusive invite to the exhibi-tions open evening get in touch with her.

July was a really good month for the club. The monthly meeting took the form of a cheese and

wine evening with a quiz. We had a stall at the School Fete on the 14th. The winner of the postbox raffle was Luke Ashman, and Trevor won the Marble game. On the 18th, 16 mem-bers and friends played tenpin bowling at Guyhirn. Betty Thompson was the overall winner. After the games lunch was served and enjoyed by all. The coach outing to Boston Market and Skegness was well supported on 25th July.

At the August meeting we had a game of curling for those who were inter-ested and bingo and cards for the less able. Afterwards it turned into a chocolate evening, something a little different for us! We had a chocolate fountain, chocolate cake, chocolate biscuits and hot chocolate. Truly scrumptious!

Unfortunately, the August outing to the National Aboretum was cancelled due to insufficient numbers.

September 6th is the Harvest Festival when Roy Truman will take the ser-vice. Refreshments will be served and we will have visitors from Coates and Christchurch. Produce will be sold for

Benwick Forget-me-Notsclub funds. The October meeting is on the 4th and the speaker will be Rosemary Higgings who will be dem-onstrating Christmas Decorations. The competition is any item beginning with the letter L. New members are always welcome!

We have had an enjoyable year so far. We celebrated the Jubilee at our June

meeting, but unforunately had to use the Village Hall rather than the planned garden venue. In July we had a trip out to Ramsey Rural Museum for our monthly meeting and only suffered a very short shower. We next meet on 17th September where we’ll be planting up bulbs for Christmas Flowering. This will be secondary to catching up on gossip about the last two months!

New members are very welcome. We meet on the third monday of each month between 7pm-9pm.

‘Ritings from the Rectory

As a flat earth person of the fens I delight to take holidays when I can in places that have

hills and cliffs and sea. This year was a joy for me to visit North Devon and Cornwall and to see some of those landscapes and sea views that make you go Wow! Climbing up hills and getting to those view points on the map (some would say I am a bit of a map nerd) I find fills me with a sense of awe and wonder that seems to give me a bit of a recharge and helps me to get my life into a better perspective.

Needless to say the camera comes along and I do my best to capture these amazing scenes so that I can view these inspirational images to remind me of the beauty and won-der of creation. I might put them into a sermon or on a card or perhaps a prayer meditation, a display or my computer desktop. They remind me to; as it were look up to God who the Bible says is the awesome Creator of the universe. Of course I take pictures of family and friends as well those around us who make life special.

If landscape photography is about appreciating things around us on the macro scale I have also discovered that if you put the camera onto a close up setting then the beach and

the rocks and the butterflies and the flowers also reveal some most beauti-ful textures, patterns and colours that I would normally walk by and not even notice. The beach seems a particularly good place with unusual stones, rocks and shells, bits of driftwood, seaweed and limpets stuck fast on their rock.

They inspired me to think about what do we cling onto to keep us safe and secure in all of the changes and chances of life? September is often an exciting time of new beginnings, starting school, going off to college, trying to find a job or just getting back into regular responsibilities with tar-gets and deadlines to meet. Life has a tendency to come at us at full throttle and we wonder how we shall man-age all the demands we have to try to juggle, work, family life, finances, health, relationships and more.

Perhaps you need some help, maybe you need a strong rock to cling onto, I started this letter with a quote from a bible writer who 3000 years ago was struggling with anxieties like us and feeling frightened on a scary journey. This person though had a good an-swer; this person had found a strong rock to lean on and a sure founda-tion for life. My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.

Page 19: September October 2012 Bugle

(Psalm 121 verse 2) This is the biggest security that you can find on the Mac-ro scale but amazingly the writer goes on, He will not let your foot slip, The Lord watches over you, The Lord will keep you from all harm. This God is also concerned about the micro scale; he loves and cares about you and me and what is going on in our lives right now. The New Testament tells us that Jesus is the Rock to put our trust in; he puts us in touch with this incredible God.

With best wishes for the autumn,

Kevin Fitzgibbon

Norfolk Green have announced changes to the 56 Bus service which runs buses to Benwick.

The new timetable, which comes into effect as of October 1st 2012 is printed here.

The main change is that the first bus leaving Benwick has been brought for-ward by 5 minutes from 9:35 to 9:30.

In the letter from Norfolk Green to the Parish Council, the Managing Director warns of further adjustments to the timetable next year, when a change in duty rebate for buses comes into effect. You will be kept up-to-date of

You may be aware that Fen-land Disctrict Council have just awarded us £500 towards the

Dickensian Market in November which helps with our expenses. To further help with the cost we hold Tombola’s alternate months in the village hall with the next one being on 14TH Septemner. This year the Dickensian Market is on 17th November and another Tombola will be held on the 14th December 2012.

It is run on the same lines as the Vil-lage Hall Tombola with a £30 flyer af-ter 10 games and a raffle with children welcome to play. On average with a full 10 games in a book, the flyer and three strips in the raffle the cost is a maximum of £9.00 with coffee, tea, squash and biscuit free with a dish put out for donations Please put these dates in your diary and the committee hope to see you there. As these tombolas are the way of financing the Dickensian market we would be pleased if you can support us in our endeavours and so keep the Market going every year. Donations of prizes for the Tombolas and Raffles are gratefully received at any time to any

committee member. After conversation with the Parish Council we have been given permis-sion to once again try and clear the Baptist Cemetery in the High Street which at the moment is a complete and utter mess.

Several people have offered to assist us in this clearance and I would be pleased if you could contact me so that we may organise a cleanup and then perhaps a rota to keep the cem-etery looking tidy all the time.

We would like to make the cemetery a place of calm where people can sit and contemplate life but before we can clean any of the headstones or remove any of the old slabs from the collapsed chapel we would like to con-tact any remaining relatives of these interred in the cemetery to make sure we are not going to upset anyone.

If you are a relative or know of any rel-ative of any interred in the cemetery please contact me so that I can make a list and so contact all caring persons before moving too much about.

The Village HallAs you are aware by now the

Village Hall in association with the Friends of Benwick Church

have built a new hall onto the side of the present hall which is now the home of Benwick Church and is also another room for the use of the vil-lage.

It is now available for bookings by any of the village so if you would like to hire the hall please contact the book-ing clerk, Patricia on 01354 677 279 for further details.

This room called the Church Room for clarity and because the Friends of Benwick Church have paid the main costs of it being built will also be used as a cinema as the Village Hall trust-ees have managed to purchase the projector, screen, laptop and speakers necessary for this use. We also have a license to show any film we would like and as we have a rather large reper-toire of DVD’s at our disposal please let us know if you have any favourite ones you would like to see.

Our first film night will be on Friday 21st September and it will cost £2.50 for a drink and biscuits although the film will be free. All will be welcome and if it is well received then we will possibly have a film night once a month on a Friday evening. The

church room will open at 7.00pm for a showing at 7.30pm.

To keep the Hall running, we need support from the village to the differ-ent functions we put on during the year. Here’s what is coming up:

21/09/12 - Film Night 29/09/12 - Official Re-opening / Har-vest Supper 19/10/12 - Tombola 23/11/12 - Tombola 15/12/12 - Bazaar26/01/13 - Burns Night

Stick the dates in your diary so you don’t forget. Any donations of prizes for the Tombolas or Raffles are grate-fully received and can be given at any time to any committee member.

Could I also please ask if there is anyone who would be willing to take a turn at calling for the Tombola eve-nings on occasion? If you can help with this or would like any information on anything to do with the Hall please feel free to get in touch with me.

Cambs Acre Bulk Oil Scheme

Cambridgeshire ACRE launched its community oil buying scheme in March this year,

and it has since gone from strength to strength.

The scheme is open to everyone who relies upon domestic heating oil in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. The minimum oil order is 500 litres, but members still pay the same price. Even if just one member in a village places an order they still receive their oil at the price agreed. This is because the scheme is county wide not village wide.

Cambs ACRE have just completed June’s buying round and those mem-bers who ordered oil bought at an amazing 47.8 pence per litre (ppl). The average price found was 54ppl mean-ing those who ordered 1000 litres saved £62 against the average price. All prices quoted are exclusive of VAT at 5%.

There is a membership fee of £20 for domestic user but this can be re-couped back in the first order saving and of course any additional orders place over the course of the year ben-efit from the full savings.

Cambs ACRE is looking for more local co-ordinators and doesn’t yet have

one in Benwick. This may be some-thing a reader would be interested in. Cambridgeshire ACRE will give you their full support with publicising the scheme in your local area. If this is something you would consider please contact Julie Weekes on 01353 860850 or email [email protected] and she will email further information. Because they ask for a little of your time each month to collate orders, via email and occasionally phone, they waive the membership fee.

Not having a local co-ordinator in the area, though, doesn’t mean readers are excluded from becoming a mem-ber of the scheme as Cambridgeshire ACRE will co-ordinate the monthly orders until someone comes forward.

If you would like further information on the scheme, a membership form, or have a specific query please contact Julie Weekes, Community Oil Buying Administrator on 01353 860850 or email [email protected].

Readers can also go to the website www.cambsacre.org.uk where they will find member saving statistics for the last 4 months.

There is also a number of private com-panies offering Bulk Buying services, see advert left.
