Also, our ADVENTURE CHRISTIAN LEARNING CENTER (6 weeks through 4 years) is also off and running, with 80+ students and just adding their 3 rd VPK class for 4 year olds. VPK is a pre-kindergarten, paid for by the state of Florida (i.e. free to the parents), to prepare 4-year-olds for their elementary school experience. #4 WE’RE IN A MOVIE! One of our members, De Miller, is actively involved in Christian movies, and he recently filmed a short film called “Deserted” largely on ACC’s campus, involving many of our members. If you’re interested in helping in future Christian films, just get in touch with him and he’ll contact you when he can use your gifting. Check out www.desertedthemovie.com to see what it’s about. MINISTRY STUFF, PRESENT: #1 WE’RE A “SENDING CHURCH”. With mixed emotions, I need to report to you that Scott Frisbie and his family have accepted the call for him to preach at a church in Kissimmee. (See his note, page 6) His last day was Sunday Sept. 23rd, and while we’ll surely miss the Frisbie family, we rejoice that the Kingdom is moving forward. Larry the Cable Guy’s famous expression of “Git-R-Done” brings a smile to my face. I really like it because it’s sort

of a no nonsense approach to life. I believe the Lord’s churches should quit dithering and start moving on to accomplish everything the church needs to do to fulfill Christ’s mission.

That’s why I’m so eager to see ACC Gettin-R-Done for the Kingdom. And wow, I’m here to tell you there’s a ton of Kingdom-stuff happening around here.

So, let’s talk about some ACC things... past and present, which typify what we’ve been doing as a church recently.

MINISTRY STUFF, PAST

#1 The staff’s SOUTH CAROLINA TRIP is now history. This trip didn’t directly concern most of the church –yet– but it will bless the church for years to come (assuming Jesus doesn’t come back right away). Most of the ACC staff attended the seminar, which was about how to provide small group studies that result in genuine disciples who reproduce genuine disciples.

God’s plan for the church is so simple. Look at Paul’s

words to Timothy in II Timothy 2:2:

And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men

who will also be qualified to teach others.

Now, look at this verse carefully. There are 4 generations of Christ-followers tucked away in this verse:

The things you (Timothy, first generation) have heard me (Paul, second generation) say… entrust to reliable men (third generation)

who will…teach others (fourth generation)

That’s God’s simple plan, and that’s what we’ll be working to start among us very quickly! Stay tuned for more info.

#2 THE SAVANNAH TRIP was wonderful! The 29 people who went had a great time and deepened our relationships with one another. Next year, we’re considering another location (maybe St. Augustine???), so start preparing for that.

#3 WE HAVE A BUNCH OF COMPASSION MINISTRIES. I don’t know of any church that does more for its community in terms of compassion ministries. There’s Domestic Abuse Ministry, Divorce Care and Divorce Care for Children, Griefshare, and Stephen Ministry. All of these programs deal directly with the issues of our modern life. Please contact the church office for more information about any of these ministries.

#4 THE CHURCH NOW HAS WIFI. Here’s more good news, the church now offers wifi. This allows all of us to use our wireless devices to connect to the Internet. There are no passwords required to access this. If you’re using a phone, iPad, or any other wifi-capable device, you’ll see the “ACC-GUEST” network. All we need to do is select it and we’ll be able to access the Internet. Cool, ‘eh?

#5 CHILDREN’S FALL FESTIVAL This event will be held on Wed. October 31st, and Tammy Wanless, former Children’s Ministry Director, will be back in town to assist. (See below)

Why do we go to all this trouble? Part of the reason is that we want to keep our precious children safer by keeping them off the streets on Halloween night. But, a big part of the reason for the Festival is that this serves as a great evangelistic opportunity to reach younger families.

This year Halloween falls on a Wednesday night, so the elders gave their approval to cancel the Wednesday Night Bible Study for this program because they feel it is that beneficial to the children and parents of this age group. Bedsides, this gives those who normally attend the Wed p.m. studies a great opportunity to volunteer and help make the Festival a success!

Working with you to “git er’ done”!

Children’s Ministries Yvonne Johnson, Children’s Ministry Director

Fall is almost here and summer just a memory. It seems to go by so quickly. Here’s a recap of our summer months—

June was consumed with Vacation Bible School! The promoting, decorating, cleanup. Diedra Whitney did a fantastic job turning our gym into a blue sky with kites, planes, clouds and balloons! Our theme this year was “Sky”, based on Mark 10:27, “Everything is possible with God.” The younger children spent their time in the Pre-school Tree House while the elementary students traveled to crafts, snacks, lessons and games. We were blessed with so many talented volunteers. Our missions focus was two-fold: locally, “Kids Against Hunger”, with students bringing food for back packs, and globally “Operation Kid to Kid” providing money for treated mosquito nets to protect children in Mali against Malaria. The students reached their goal of $600.00 to purchase 100 nets. They cheered for Doug Dykstra to be slimed as a reward for their efforts. He is now our “VBS Hero”. In July the students were promoted to their next grade and it seemed like everyone took a vacation. In August the Flints hosted a “Back to School Pool Party” at their house. It was a great time for parents and students. (See pictures in the center of this newsletter). WOW what a great summer “Adventure” we have had here in the Children’s Ministry. P.S. Fall Festival is coming October 31. Plans are being made for an evening to remember. Check out the box below! Sign-up sheets are available each weekend for you to volunteer. This is your opportunity to not only participate in the fun, but to be the one to put a smile on a child’s face as they play the games and enjoy the treats. So, mark your calendar and don’t miss this exciting, fun packed evening.

We have had so much happen this summer within our youth group. We have grown closer to God and closer to each other. We went on our annual trip to “Christ in Youth (CIY): Move” in June. Every year in the past we’ve gone to Milligan but this year

we decided to go to a new campus. We felt as if the students were getting into a rut, what some of us know as the “same old, same old”. So we thought a change of scenery would be exactly what they needed to reconnect to God. So we decided to go where none of us have ever gone before… Johnson University. It was a great experience and the teens most definitely felt the presence of the Holy Spirit almost immediately.

On the last day of “CIY: Move” we received our challenge cards. The challenge cards are something CIY does every year. They contain a challenge for the individual student to complete over the next year leading up to the next CIY. For example one of our students, Emily Frisbie completed her challenge to drink nothing but tap water for an entire year from last “CIY: Move”. So we celebrated at CIY when the year was over with a Sweet Tea Party. Before the week was over we had several commitments and a lot of challenges accepted. 14 of our teens made life changing decisions and 13 of them decided to open their challenge cards and commit to completing that challenge. We even had 2 decide that they wanted to go into full-time ministry! Here are some of the challenges that our youth will be trying to accomplish over the next year:

Fast once a week for a year, just breakfast and lunch. Drink plenty of liquids and use the time to pray for friends.

Lead a devotion at home with family once a week, and pray God will move in your family. Start with Matthew 5-7.

Make breakfast for your school teachers once a month.

Skip the beach trip or vacation next spring break and go on a service trip with the church.

Lead a middle school small group with an adult this year.

Give 15% of everything you make this year (including gifts) to the church offering. Have someone keep you accountable.

Give up homecoming or prom. Take the money you would have spent and give it to someone that you know can’t afford to go.

Memorize the Sermon on the Mount. Recite it in front of the youth group.

So as you can see these are not the easiest of challenges, of course I guess that’s why they call them challenges. The truth is our students are going to need help from their church family this year as they continue their journey through life. So here is my challenge to you, Church: Spend this year constantly encouraging our students and let them know that you are on their side and willing to help them accomplish their goals any way you can.

Students: I would also challenge you to stick with it! I know you can accomplish these challenges if you just trust in Christ to lead you (Philippians 4:13). So if you run into any trouble, always remember you have a loving church family who’s got your back.

Your Brother in Christ,

Youth News Jayce Flint, Assistant Youth Minister

Commitment Cheryl Dykstra, Office Manager & ACLC Administrator

The theme for Adventure Christian Church

AND Adventure Christian Academy for the

next 12 months is “Commitment.”

Recently our preaching minister, Doug Dykstra,

preached on James 5:7-12. This passage spoke about

being committed to great follow-through for God - no

whining, no copping out, no giving up. In celebration of

this great concept we had a group reading of what is

below during worship. These are some of the most

inspiring words we have heard all year, according to

feedback from the congregation. Perhaps one of the best

words to sum up what this reading is all about is:

Commitment. We have taken that as the emphasis for us

around here all year at our academy and our church. So

we may want to make a copy of what follows below and

hang it somewhere visible to review all year.

COMMITMENT

I am a volunteer in the ARMY of God, and I’m enlisted for eternity. I will either retire at the rapture, or die in this

ARMY, but I will not get out, sell out, be talked out or pushed out. I am faithful, reliable, and ready. If my God

needs me anywhere I’ll be there.

I am a soldier, not a baby. I do not need to be pampered, petted, or pumped up.

I am a soldier. No one has to call me, remind me, bribe me, allure me, or visit me. I AM NOT A WIMP. No

one has to send me cards, flowers, or gifts. I do not need to be coddled, cared for or catered to. I am committed. I

cannot have my feelings hurt bad enough to turn me around. I can’t be discouraged enough to turn me aside.

When Jesus called me in this ARMY I had nothing, so if I lose everything on this earth, I will still be ahead. I

WILL WIN. My God always has - and will continue to supply all of my needs. I am more than a conqueror. I will

always triumph. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Devils cannot defeat me, people can’t

disillusion me, weather cannot stop me, money can’t buy me, and Hell cannot hold me!!!! I am a soldier. Even death

can’t destroy me. When my commander calls me from this battlefield, he will promote me, and I will reign with him.

I am a soldier in this ARMY, and I am marching - claiming victory. I will not give up or turn around. I am a soldier

marching heaven bound, AND HERE I STAND.

Thanks!! Scott Frisbie, Associate and Youth Minister

For those who may not have heard, I have accepted the call to be the Senior Pastor for a church in Kissimmee beginning the last part of September. It is with mixed emotions that I

write this farewell note. I am excited to begin a new work the Lord has set in front of me, but it is bitter-sweet because I am departing Adventure. My family and I will miss you dearly. The Lord has blessed our work here with almost 30 new teens over the last two years, with many being baptized and brought into a closer relationship with Christ. We developed a great team and God has blessed—all Glory to God! We’d like to thank all of you for your prayers and support and a special thank you to all the youth leaders and sponsors. May God continue to bless all the ministries here and throughout His Kingdom! Sincerely, Pastor Scott, Tammi, Emily, and Adam

Re: Former ACLC VPK student, (a text to ACLC Administrator from his grandmother) Dear Cheryl (ACLC administrator), Quick kudo for ACLC. Caden’s teacher called me last night and said Caden is exceptionally bright. She gave the teaching pictures and he got them all correct. She said in everything so far he is way out in front of the rest of the class, now has to figure out how to keep him engaged as she brings the rest of the class around. Good job ACLC!

From Kids Against Hunger Dear Yvonne and Adventure Christian Church VBS kids: Thank you all so much for collecting all the food that you did for the Deliver the Difference/Kids Against Hunger Summer Feeding Program. You helped us provide many, many meals for hungry Lake County Children. In the fall we will begin feeding up to 1500 children every weekend for the 2012-2013 school year through our ”Kidspack Program” in North Lake County. Your Adventure VBS has been a real blessing to us!

Re: Thanks for care at loss of a loved one Dear Friends, I could say thank you a thousand times, but it would not be enough to all you wonderful people at Adventure Christian Church. The concern you gave Paul and I with your visits, cards, phone calls and most of all your prayers. Thank you to Kerry for all your visits; Brandon for the DVD you made; (my family and I will treasure this forever) Women’s Ministry for the wonderful meal; Morry, for the beautiful music, and Doug, Paul‘s memorial service was very

meaningful to the family. Life truly is just like Doug said, “we do not know what tomorrow will bring”. I think Paul was well aware of that, he tried so hard to do things the right way. Thank you, God bless each of you.

Re: Lake County Schools program to help needy children Through the gift of your giving, children achieve normalcy. They sleep in a bed; they eat three meals a day; they have light by which to read; and yes-they do, indeed experience the wonder of Christmas; the thrill of birthdays; the excitement of prom; the enthusiasm of their first day of school—their experiences mirror their peers because of you. And because of you---they participate in the joy of childhood.

Woman Meets Jesus Seminar held on Saturday September 15 was well received by all in attendance. Great fellowship, challenging message and refreshing meal. Ruth Vander Zee, the featured speaker, shared how Jesus used women from the Bible in His ministry. Ruth shared the parable of the Prodigal Son, only she told it from the female perspective. A very touching and

emotional message.

The Adventure Begins at Adventure Christian Academy Gary Johnson, ACC Administrator

Adventures often start with excitement, anticipation and maybe a little reluctance. Students, parents and teachers are anticipating new experiences that will create fond memories for this 2012-‘13 school year. A lot of hard work and prayer went into preparing for Orientation and our first day of school.

New Teachers Introduced This past Tuesday night (August 14, 2012) was our “Orientation/Back to School Night”. Parents had an opportunity to meet the staff for this school year and visit with all their students’ new teachers. Orientation was an evening to reunite with old friends for many of our students, and for other students, a chance to meet and make new friends for the school year. Mr. Johnson introduced four of our new teachers: Mr. Mongiovi, who will be our computer teacher (who was one of the last of our troops to leave Iraq this year); Mr. Kreutzer (who comes highly recommended) for English and Literature; Dr. Arcerio (a retired oral surgeon) as our Science teacher; and Mr. Bowman as our Math teacher (who is finishing up his PHD and has taught in the Bronx). In addition to these great teachers, Sara Buschor returned from taking a year off after giving birth to a beautiful baby boy. We are so proud of our teaching staff! The Orientation Night Mr. Mongiovi started the Orientation evening by playing the piano and singing “Thank You For Giving to The Lord” as a tribute to our parents and teachers who have dedicated their lives to serving our youth. This song embodies our hearts’

desire to help each student become all that God wants them to become. The evening ended with an opportunity for teachers to meet their new students with their families. The next morning God allowed us to start our new school year adventure. The First Day of School The first day of school was exciting and a little bit confusing at times for students, teachers and even parents. One event that made the first day memorable was the raising of the American and Christian flags with the school body present. The rest of the day teachers and students were getting used to our new

dismissal bells, class procedures, lunch procedures and making sure students had all their books and materials. PS. This year is scheduled for our very first 12th grade class to graduate in May 2013. The academy is now entering it’s 9th year; and seeing our first high school graduates will be dream come true to all who have been with the school for nearly a decade.

The school year has started, and the sports program at ACA is off to a fast start, with the sports ministry program in ACC close behind! Here is some information to get you up to date.

VOLLEYBALL

Our girls volleyball team is brand new with only two players returning from last year’s team. So far they have been defeated in every match, but showing improvement, ACA took Leesburg First Academy to overtime before losing 27-25. In the next match, ACA defeated Faith Lutheran in the second game, 25-18 for their first game victory of the year, but fell in the third game. Upcoming games include home games on October 1, 2, 4, and 11 followed by the league tournament on October 27. The cost for all home games is $3.00 per adult, and $1.00 per student.

BASKETBALL

Registrations are now being taken for the ACC Youth Basketball League. The age ranges are 3rd grade through 8th grade. The cost for the season is $40 and can be payable online or at the academy or church offices. The registration deadline will be September 30, practices begin the week of October 1, and games will begin on Saturday, October 27 running through December 8.

ACA begins their middle school basketball season with practices on October 22. The first game of the season will be on Monday, December 2 at St. Barnabas Episcopal School.

ADULT SPORTS

There will be a golf outing on Sunday, October 14 at Baytree Golf Club in Tavares. The outing will begin at 3:00 p.m. Sign-up sheets will be at the Welcome Center beginning the weekend of September 29-30. This is open to all, men and women, high school age and up. The cost for the 18 holes will be $20.00.

Monday night volleyball continues each Monday night (except holidays) starting at 6:00 p.m. Come on out and have a great time, good fun and friends, and some competition! This is open to all, men and women.

There will be a sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center beginning the weekend of September 29-30 for all those interested in playing softball. Men and women, 18 and up are welcome to participate.

There is something for everyone, whether a participant or an encourager! Get out and support ACA sports, and get involved in the ACC sports ministry!

Fall Festival

Wednesday October 31st

Put it on your calendar because our kids — and the kids of the community — will enjoy a great time of fun and fellowship in this huge Halloween alternative program. This is one of ACC’s major kid events that we put on each year, so get ready for it. Tammy Wanless will be in town to help Yvonne Johnson put it all together. More details to follow.

For Your Calendar….. Paul Todd in Concert Wednesday, December 19 Paul Todd is not only coming back this year, but it’s even better with the addition of a second concert! The matinee show will be from 3:30 to 5pm, with a reprise from 6:30 to 8pm. The regular Wed. night dinner will be available between, for all to share before or after your concert of choice. You won’t want to miss it!

Our Next “Discover the Adventure” Class Sunday November 11, 12:15 in the Gym

Discover the Adventure classes are intended for anyone who has questions about ACC. They are also a prerequisite for membership in the church. The class includes a great fried chicken dinner with all the trimmings. In this class we encourage questions on any subject related to the church, its history, or teachings. Questions about our non-denominational structure, why we have communion each weekend, and the church’s historic roots are just some of those that will be answered. Our entire staff will be present too, so you’ll meet all of them and hear a brief synopsis of their ministries. If you have not yet attended, please let the office know that you wish to, by calling 343-9020, or by signing one of the invitations that will be in the bulletin for the two weekends before the class.
