Santa Lucia Branch #89 September 2011 Big SIR Report: By Bob Pendergrass A big thank you to Little SIR, Bruce Adams for running the meeting during my August absence. (Did you miss the free lunch, like me?) Trust some of you picked up the info sheets regarding the tours being offered by Active Seniors. I attended the SIR annual meeting August 1 in Vallejo. Today's Humor......... Sign Language

A lady about eight months pregnant got on a bus. She noticed the man opposite her was smiling at her. She immediately moved to another seat. This time the smile turned into a grin, so she moved again. The man seemed more amused. When on the fourth move, the man burst out laughing, she complained to the driver and he had the man arrested. The case came up in court. The judge asked the young man what he had to say for himself. The man replied. "Well your Honor, it was like this:When the lady got on the bus, I couldn't help but notice her condition. She sat down under a sign that said 'The Double Mint Twins are coming' and I grinned. Then she moved and sat under a sign that said 'Logan's Liniment will reduce the swelling' and I had to smile. Then she placed herself under a deodorant sign that said, 'William's Big Stick Did the Trick' and I could hardly contain myself. But, Your Honor, when she moved the fourth time and sat under a sign that said, 'Goodyear Rubber could have prevented this Accident!' ..... I just lost it."

October SpeakerMy name is Melanie Franke, PT, DPT. I am a Physical Therapist at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, located at the new Peninsula Wellness Center in Marina, CA. I completed my Master of Science in Physical Therapy at UW-La Crosse, graduating in 2005. I worked for a rural hospital in Wisconsin, as well as a large Mayo-affiliated hospital. I specialize in Vestibular dysfunctions (vertigo/dizziness and imbalance disorders) and attended Emory University in Atlanta to become Herdman-certified in Vestibular Rehabilitation in 2006. I decided to further my education and attained my Doctorate in Physical Therapy at St. Catherine University in Minneapolis, MN, in 2010. I moved to Monterey, CA, in January 2011. I work with patients across the lifespan with a variety of diagnoses, specializing in balance and vertigo/dizziness. In my free-time, I enjoy running and hiking, and exploring all California has to offer.

I was planning to talk about the importance of exercise for older adults. As we age, we tend to be less active, leading to muscle weakness, imbalance and bone demineralization (osteoporosis). Simple daily exercises, either at home or a fitness facility, can increase your strength, flexibility and prevent injuries from disuse or falls. Studies show that just 30min of exercise most days of the week, including gentle strength training, can improve overall health and reduce the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. Checking with your doctor is always important before beginning an exercise program, and discussing a referral to PT to address specific limitations or looking into a personal trainer for assistance is a safe way to begin your program to better health.
