During September, GALILEO librarians are encouraged to celebrate “Get the Password Month,” which is intended to increase awareness and understanding of GALILEO throughout Georgia. During “Get the Password Month,” GALILEO librarians throughout the state will promote password distribution for home access among library patrons and emphasize the wide range of resources available through GALILEO. GALILEO Services has assembled a publicity packet that is being sent to every GALILEO library and media center in Georgia; the packet contains materials designed around the theme, “Get the Password to Georgia’s World September is Get the Password Month! by Tim Brown, GALILEO Communications Specialist of Information.” The materials include a fact sheet about GALILEO passwords, strategies for publicizing GALILE O, new GALILEO posters, and lapel buttons that encourage library patrons to ask for their GALILEO password. A template for a “Get the Password” bookmark can be copied and distributed by individual libraries, as well as a GALILEO table tent to be placed on GALILEO workstations. “Get the Password” activities are part of the publicity packet; the GALILEO word search is a fun way to familiarize patrons with GALILEO terms, and an updated GALILEO scavenger hunt gives patrons hands-on training in finding information through GALILEO databases. An award certificate has been included for younger patrons who complete the scavenger hunt. The publicity packet contains two sample public s e r v i c e announcements (PSAs) to be sent to local radio stations in Georgia; these P SAs will encourage members of your community to get the password to GALILEO from the local public library. Scheherazade didn’t just pluck this password out of the blue, by the way. Sesame seeds have long been regarded as good luck in African mythology. When the seed pod ripens, it splits open and sesame seeds pop out. This little explosion is the basis for belief that “sesame had a magic power to unlock secret places” (“Old Cricket says,” Cricket, September 1991). The word “sesame” is yet to be selected as a password by the GALILEO password generator for a lucky institution. A web site attractive anduseful to children has been adream of members of theGALILEO community for a longtime. That dream will be realizedsoon when the new GALILEOKids’ Page is rolled out. The newKids’ Page, which was designedby Jay Wilson of Nine Rodessa,Inc. is tailored to children in thethird through the sixth grades; itsfeatures have been designed withthis age group in mind.

Kid-friendly interface: TheGALILEO Kids’ Page features akid-friendly interface that plays offthe concept of an MP3 player.The colors are bold, and the pagefeatures simple animation andsound files. (The sounds aresuppressed in Netscape and canbe turned on and off in InternetExplorer.)

A few of the best databases:The new Kids’ Page offers amuch-reduced menu ofdatabases, including the bestdatabases geared to children inthe target age group and availableto all kids through their K-12institution’s password. Theseinclude SIRS Discoverer ,

As users “mouse”over the list of databases on theleft side of the screen, shortdescriptions of each databaseappears in a box to the right.

Especially for teachers andparents: Clicking on the Teachers(T) button leads to pages withfurther explanation of the site andmore detail on the databasesfeatured.

Tested with real kids: Oneof the most important steps inproducing a new web site is usertesting to make sure the conceptsthat sound good in the designstages actually work with realusers. Several rounds of testingversions of the new GALILEOpage included real kids in thetarget age group. Educators alsogave us feedback.

GALILEO’s new Kids’ Page Interface

Here is a fun strategy to ac-quaint teachers in your schoolwith GALILEO’s value in theclassroom: Earn “Book FairBucks” to spend at your next bookfair. Here is how it works. Everyteacher and staff member in yourschool is given a “Question of theDay” every morning for twentydays before the book fair; partici-pants have an opportunity to earntwenty “Book Fair Bucks” tospend at the book fair. Questionsstart out very easy and becomeprogressively more difficult. Thepoint of this exercise is to moti-vate teachers to investigate areasof GALILEO that will be useful intheir classroom instruction, soquestions should be designedwith answers found in databasesapplicable to the curriculum.“Book Fair Bucks” are awardedonly to those who participate inthe “Question of the Day,” even ifthey don’t participate every day.When a question is given out, al-low participants a reasonable

children’s services, or on yourhome computer. There will alsobe a link to the Kids’ Page fromthe K-12 database menu on theregular GALILEO page.

Advanced GALILEO: Thenew Kids’ Page features a link tothe main GALILEO interface;some older students may findthemselves more comfortableusing the new interface in theregular version of GALILEO. Anew look and manyenhancements have made thisversion more user-friendly thanever before.

Both the kid’s version andthe regular grown-up version ofGALILEO are dynamic. Long-time users have seen manychanges to the content and thelook of GALILEO through theyears. Surveys, usability studies,and comments made by usershave led to continualimprovements to GALILEO—soplease keep it up! Use the“Contact Us” feature in the regularGALILEO page and in the Kids’Page to tell us what you think.

In our school, the “Questionof the Day” contest created a veryfestive atmosphere; teachers andstaff enjoyed finding answers tothe questions, and theyparticularly enjoyed spendingtheir “Book Fair Bucks.” Mostimportantly, however, theexercise enabled teachers tolearn more about GALILEO andits usefulness in the classroom.With a l itt le adaptation, thecontest can be conducted amongyour school’s students as well;students will enjoy winning prizesfor correct answers to the“Question of the Day”!

The Digital Library ofGeorgia (DLG), a GALILEOinitiative featuring materialsrelated to the history and cultureof the state, is currently workingon a number of exciting newprojects. These are expected tobe made available over the nextyear and will be substantialadditions to the holdings of theDLG.

The Digital Library ofGeorgia is working closely withthe Georgia Department ofArchives and History to digitizethe approximately 18,000photographs that make up theVanishing Georgia collection.Funded by the NationalEndowment for the Humanitiesfrom 1977 to 1979, the VanishingGeorgia project located,selected, and copied historicallysignificant photographs held byindividuals who wanted to sharetheir pieces of Georgia’s pastwith future generations. Overone third of Georgia’s 159counties were visited by theVanishing Georgia project team,who copied more than 25,000images. The entire collection ofVanishing Georgia copynegatives (the majority from thelate 1880s to the early 1950s) willbe made available online as partof the Georgia HomePLACEinitiative. The Digital Library ofGeorgia is working with a vendorwho will perform the digitizationof the photographs, andinformation about each

photograph will be entered intoa database which will be madefully searchable online. Theimages in the collectiondocument the economic, social,cultural, and political history ofGeorgia and include subjectssuch as street scenes, interiorsand exteriors of homes,businesses, architectural styles,modes of transportation,agricultural and industrialactivities, disasters, specialevents or pastimes, and manyother aspects of life in Georgia.The first images from theVanishing Georgia collection willbe made available through theDLG during early spring 2003.

Georgia Historic Books

The Georgia Historic Booksproject moved into high gear lastfall. A contract was made withPacific Data ConversionCorporation, Inc. to transcribeand encode three hundredvolumes related to Georgia’shistory. These include not onlybooks about Georgia’s history,but also works important inGeorgia’s history, such as worksof literature written by Georgians.Pacific Data utilizes a “re-keying”process that is able to create avery highly accurate electronicversion of the text of the books.The text is “encoded” usingStandard Generalized MarkupLanguage (SGML), whichcomputers can use to bothrender the structure of the booksonscreen and provide moreeffective searching.

In order to send the booksto Pacific Data, the Digital Libraryof Georgia first created a list ofthree hundred important works

related to Georgia history usinga number of bibliographies on thesubject, and then consulted withlibrarians and historians. In mostcases, only books published priorto 1923 could be used due tocopyright restrictions. Whileresearching the list of titles tobe included, it was foundthat the Documenting theAmerican South projectat the University of NorthCarolina at Chapel Hill (UNC)(http://docsouth.unc.edu/) hadalready digitized a number ofvery important works onGeorgia’s history. Fortunately,because the Georgia HistoricBooks project is followingaccepted standards and bestpractices for the creation ofelectronic texts, we were able tomake an agreement with UNC toinclude digitized books from thetheir collections as part of theGeorgia Historic Booksdatabase. In exchange, theirproject will include an equalnumber of books digitized by theDLG that relate to Georgia and,more broadly, to the South ingeneral.

After the titles were selectedfor the project, black and whiteimages of each page werecreated using copies of the booksfound mainly in the collections ofthe University of GeorgiaLibraries. A few books were alsoborrowed from other libraries inthe state, and a number wereimaged from microfilm that hadbeen created in the early 1990sas part of a SOLINET/Association of SoutheasternResearch Libraries(ASERL)preservation microfilming project.The black and white images weresent to Pacific Data, which usedthem to create the electronictexts. Color images of theillustrations and title pages ofeach book were also created,and these will be presented onthe web along with the electronictext and black and white pageimages to give the user a numberof ways to view an individualbook.

Once the collection is madefully available online, users willbe able to browse and searchacross over 300 volumes,allowing them to conductresearch and discover Georgia’shistory in ways not possible

before. The first volumes ofGeorgia Historic Books arecurrently available, andadditional volumes will be addedduring fall 2002 and spring 2003.

Georgia Air Photographs

The Georgia AirPhotographs collection, held atthe Map Library of the Universityof Georgia Libraries, featuresapproximately 220,000photographs ranging across theentire state. The collectionconsists of photographicmontages for each county thatare used as visual indexes and9 x 9 inch prints that date from1938 to the 1970s. Most wereproduced by either the U.S.Department of Agriculture or theDepartment of the Interior.

The Digital Library ofGeorgia is undertaking a two-partprocess to digitize approximately45,000 images from thecollection. Photographs will be

ProQuest 6.0 andEBSCOhost Web 6.0 made theirdebuts in GALILEO in July, andthese new interfaces toGALILEO’s core full-textdatabases make the databases’contents more accessible thanever before.

EBSCOhost now features ahighly visible folder that allowsusers to view, save, print, and e-mail articles from differentEBSCO databases in a singleplace. Search results l istsinclude a new folder icon and“Add” link, and all items in theuser’s folder are accessible at all

times through the “View Folder”l ink above the EBSCOhosttoolbar. Because the contents ofthe folder remain as users movefrom one database to another,this new feature allows users tocompare search results acrossdatabases and compile a singleset of useful results beforebeginning to save, print, or e-mailthem. This means fewerinterruptions in the researchprocess—always a welcomeimprovement!

ProQuest also offers usersthe ability to save results as theymove from database to

database, and their newexporting and one-click printingoptions make it easier to managesearch results. ProQuest userscan now export results directly tobibliographic managementsoftware, and the printing optionnow takes users directly to aprinter-friendly article display andstarts the browser’s printingprocess.

Both vendors have updatedtheir interfaces visually, andmany of the other changesintroduced in these new releasesare meant to make the interfaceseasier to navigate. ProQuest’s

“Browse Lists” and “Topic Finder”features have both beenreorganized to make it easier forusers to find the most usefulsearch topics. EBSCOhost’ssearch screens and results listsare now presented as tabbedpages, making it easier to find allavailable options while keepingscreens uncluttered.

is “Mickey Mouse,” thepassword for the Allied invasionof Normandy on D-Day. Themilitary has long championedthe use of passwords and codewords. We’ve all seen themovies with the nervoussentries asking thoseapproaching, “What’s thepassword?” The movies havealso shown passwords beingused and misused by theintell igence community.Imagine a scene in which onespy says, “The canary flies atmidnight,” and his contact

answers something about thetiger in the forest or the rain inthe desert. Passwords asrecognition devices have beenthe subject of Cold War dramaand comedy. In one Get Smartepisode, Max inadvertentlygives a carnival worker a KAOSpassword and wins a Kewpiedoll made out of plutonium.

Do you have troubleremembering your password?Ali Baba’s greedy brother forgotthe password “open sesame”(he actually tried “open barley,”according to Richard Burton’stranslation) and was trappedinside the secret cave, victim to

the thieves who murdered him.Do you write your password onyour palm with a pen? Do youwrite it on your Palm with astylus? Maybe you scribble iton a sticky note and hide itunder your keyboard.Herodotus writes of amessenger who had to crossenemy lines to Asia Minor,where he would be thoroughlysearched. The messenger’shead was shaved, the words ofthe message were tattooed onhis head, and then his hairallowed to grow back. When heinnocently crossed into Persia,he shaved his head and

delivered the message (Secretmessages: Concealment,codes, & other types ofingenious communication, W.S.Butler and L.D. Keeney, 2001).GALILEO passwords may bedifficult to remembersometimes, but like passwordsthroughout history, they allowaccess to treasure, and maybeeven excitement, intrigue, andromance!

A vendor whospecializes in cartographicimaging and geographicinformation systems will digitizethe index prints and a largenumber of the selectedphotographs. More of thephotographs are being digitizedin-house at the Digital Libraryof Georgia by DLG staff andstudent assistants.Images for a county will beplaced online as the county iscompleted, and the first areexpected to be available duringlate fall 2002. Having accessto multiple photographs of thesame town or area at differentdates will allow users tovisualize the growth of the state,as well as providing a directview into the history of smalltowns in Georgia. While onlyimaging of the collection isbeing performed at the point inthe project, by relying onstandards and best practicesfor digital projects the onlinecollection will be able to evolveto allow for more sophisticatedmeans of access in the future.

Ginger Heltzel has worked withGALILEO since March 2001 asan information analyst in theUniversity of Georgia’s mainlibrary. She has worked primarilyon projects associated with theDigital Library of Georgia,including Southeastern NativeAmerican Documents, GeorgiaHistoric Newspapers, GeorgiaHistoric Books, and LumpkinFamily Letters. She is currentlyinvolved in the creation of a nameindex for the Native AmericanDocuments that will simplifysearches in the database. Shealso handles weekly CurrentContents updates. Ginger enjoysworking with GALILEO: “I likebeing part of a team that makesvaluable information available tothe public.”

Meet the Staff!preservation in Georgia as wellas other places around theworld. Approximately 1500photographic images takenfrom the 1950s through the1980s are being drawn from twocollections: the John LinleyPhotographs and the HubertBond Owens collection. HubertBond Owens, 1905-1989, wasdean of the School ofEnvironmental Design from1969 to 1973, and John Linleywas a longtime faculty memberand author of The GeorgiaCatalog: Historic AmericanBuildings Survey, A Guide to theArchitecture of the State, mostrecently published by UGApress in 1982. Examples of subjectareas related to Georgia withinthe collections include:Antebellum, Postbellum,cityscapes, landscapes,plantation style, NativeAmerican dwellings, churches,bungalows, log houses,housing projects, GreekRevival, Federal, Italianate, andcast iron. This first images ofthis collection will be madeavailable during late fall 2002.
