Weight Loss Myths and Facts

A diet myth is advice that becomes popular without facts to back it up.When it comes to weight loss, many popular beliefs are myths andothers are only partly true. Here are some facts to help you sortthrough what you hear.

Myth: Skipping breakfast makes you gain weight.Fact: Eating a healthy breakfast can help you manage your hungerlater in the day and help you to say, “no thanks,” to unhealthy snacks. No scientific studies; however, have shown that skipping the morningmeal leads directly to weight gain. If you are not hungry first thing, listen to your body.

Myth: Eating at night will make you fat.Fact: People who eat late at night do tend to put on extra weight. Onepossible reason is that late-night eaters tend to choose high-calorietreats. Some people who snack after dinner do not sleep well, whichcan lead to unhealthy cravings the next day. If you are hungry afterdinner, limit yourself to healthy snacks such as baby carrots or berries.

Myth: You cannot be overweight and healthy.Fact: There are some people who are overweight with healthy bloodpressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels. For more people, excess weight increases the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Thelonger you are overweight, the more your risk for developing diseaseincreases. While you can be overweight and healthy, carrying extraweight will increase your risk for health problems down the line, buthealthy eating and regular activity are good for you no matter what youweigh.

Diet Fads: Effective or Not?

From losing weight to managing food intolerances and sensitivities tohealthy glowing skin – there seem to be a plethora of diets thatpromise a healthier lifestyle while tackling specific issues. But how

Page 9: September Edition 2019 - World Bankpubdocs.worldbank.org/en/493281564608003512/HealthBeat.pdf · Walktober Walking Campaign Walk! Walk! Walk! Motivate the staff to register for Walktober

effective are they?

Intermittent FastingVarious versions of intermittent fasting exists, but the main idea is tocreate a schedule that restricts you from eating during certain timeperiods, and in between you eat as you please. This type of dietinghas shown to lower overall calorie intake, however, it does notnecessarily educate individuals where the calories come from andwhat sources of calories are more nutrient dense. While there havebeen some reports of weight loss, more research is needed to alsounderstand the long-term effects.

Ketogenic DietThe ketogenic diet is a more extreme version of the low-carb diet. Most guidelines of the diet restrict your carbohydrate intake toapproximately 25 g per day. This is equal to about one to two slices ofbread. The diet also emphasizes a higher fat intake. Unfortunately, most individuals following this diet are forced to restrict nutrient densefoods high in fiber like fruits and legumes. There is also often anincreased intake of saturated fats (bad fats) from processed foods andfatty meats, instead of healthier fats from nuts and seeds. If followedcarefully and guided with a professional, the diet may be an effectivemeans of improving blood sugar levels and weight. However, the dietis not sustainable for most people and can result in a rebound.

Mediterranean DietThe Mediterranean Diet is inclusive of all traditional eating patternsacross countries that border the Mediterranean Sea. While it providesvarious flavors and dishes, it also emphasizes the importance nutrientdense plant-based foods, lean proteins, healthier fats, and smallerportions. Finally, the Mediterranean Diet encourages regular physicalactivity, creating a more holistic approach to health. Research showsstrong evidence the Mediterranean diet as one of the moresustainable eating patterns in following a healthier lifestyle. Stay tunedfor more information and updates on how we are incorporating theMediterranean diet and lifestyle into the HQ cafes this fall!

Paleo DietAlso known as the “caveman diet”, the paleo diet focuses on eatingfruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, healthy fats, meat, poultry, seafoodand eggs. The diet restricts grains, dairy, legumes, some root

Page 10: September Edition 2019 - World Bankpubdocs.worldbank.org/en/493281564608003512/HealthBeat.pdf · Walktober Walking Campaign Walk! Walk! Walk! Motivate the staff to register for Walktober

vegetables and processed foods. The paleo diet has some merit as itencourages consumption of whole nutrient dense foods while limitinghighly processed foods, such as sugar, which is a larger contributor toweight gain and inflammation. However, the diet also limits intake ofcrucial nutrients that most people are lacking, such as calcium andvitamin D found in dairy. While there are some advantages to thepaleo diet, it has its downsides in limiting a number of importantnutrients too.

Whole30The Whole30 diet is an elimination diet that cuts out a number foodgroups including sugar, grains, legumes and more. In the program, foods are slowly reintroduced, in hopes individuals will be able tobetter understand how certain foods affect their body and overallhealth. Such elimination diets are often implemented in clinical oroutpatient settings in order to identify allergies, intolerances, andsensitivities in order to manage medical conditions affecting the gut, such as irritable bowel syndrome. Without the careful monitoring andguidance from a dietitian or other clinicians, individuals who follow theWhole30 diet can easily become deficient in a number of vitamins andminerals. While the Whole30 diet can raise awareness of your ownhealth and limit highly processed foods, it is recommended to only doso with a health professional.
