Thursday 5th October at 10.30am – 3pmPottery workshops10.30-12.30: Fun Halloween themed session - make a pinch pot pumpkin, ghost or witch.1.00-3.00: Autumn themed session - make a beautiful dish or vase with autumn leaves design. HERITAGE OPEN DAYS TALKS AND TOURSThursday 7th September at 10.30am Elswick through the yearsIllustrated talk about the development of Elswick in the 19th and 20th centuries. Coffee & scones served at 10am.
Thursday 7th September at 1pm Why graveyards matterIllustrated talk about the history and environmental significance of St James’ graveyard. Tea and cakes served.
Saturday 9th September at 11.00am Famous names in St James’ Graveyard Guided tour of the graveyard, opened when Benwell was home to some of the richest and most powerful families in Newcastle. Those buried there include the developer Richard Grainger, mining engineer John Buddle and glass manufacturer John Sowerby.
Saturday 9th September at 2pm Benwell’s lost coalminesGuided tour tracing the area’s coalmining heritage, including forgotten villages such as Paradise. Involves some uphill walking.
Tuesday 5th December at 2pmIt’s almost ChristmasJoin us to watch a festive film. Ice creams and popcorn.
BIG WINTER EVENTThursday 7th December 11am – 4pmWinter Event11.00am – 1.00pm: try your hand at different crafts – festive fabric craft, card making and candle table decorations.2.00pm – 4.00pm: ghosts of Christmas past

ExhibitionsThis autumn we have two exhibitions on display at St James’ – “Benwell and Scotswood in the time of the First World War” and “Elswick through the years in maps and photographs”.
Heritage TuesdaysDrop in any Tuesday between 12 noon - 4pm. Explore the historic church and graveyard, exhibitions, refreshments, archive film, publications, family and local history advice.

Monday 18th September at 1pm Celebrating People and Place Illustrated talk by Simon Parkin about Newcastle’s Commemorative Plaque scheme.
Monday 16th October at 1pm Bringing back the Banner Film and talk telling the story of the recent project to restore the Burradon colliery banner.
Monday 20th November at 1pm The Romans on Tyneside Illustrated talk by Nick Hodgson about recent excavations on Hadrian’s Wall including news of the latest discoveries in Benwell.

Everyone welcome
Visit West Newcastle Picture History Collection at the West End Library to see their collection of 20,000 photographs of the west end. Open Mondays 10am – 4pm.

Friday 15th September at 2pm and Friday 10th November at 2pmThis area has been the setting for numerous films and TV shows. Through these we can revisit our history and see places that have gone. Join us for an afternoon’s entertainment and remember the city as it used to be.
