Thursday 7th September at 1pm Why graveyards matterIllustrated talk about the history and environmental significance of St James’ graveyard. Tea and cakes served.

Saturday 9th September at 11.00am Famous names in St James’ Graveyard Guided tour of the graveyard, opened when Benwell was home to some of the richest and most powerful families in Newcastle. Those buried there include the developer Richard Grainger, mining engineer John Buddle and glass manufacturer John Sowerby.

ExhibitionsThis autumn we have two exhibitions on display at St James’ – “Benwell and Scotswood in the time of the First World War” and “Elswick through the years in maps and photographs”.

Heritage TuesdaysDrop in any Tuesday between 12 noon - 4pm. Explore the historic church and graveyard, exhibitions, refreshments, archive film, publications, family and local history advice.

Monday 18th September at 1pm Celebrating People and Place Illustrated talk by Simon Parkin about Newcastle’s Commemorative Plaque scheme.

Monday 16th October at 1pm Bringing back the Banner Film and talk telling the story of the recent project to restore the Burradon colliery banner.

Monday 20th November at 1pm The Romans on Tyneside Illustrated talk by Nick Hodgson about recent excavations on Hadrian’s Wall including news of the latest discoveries in Benwell.

Visit West Newcastle Picture History Collection at the West End Library to see their collection of 20,000 photographs of the west end. Open Mondays 10am – 4pm.
