FROM THE PASTOR

As most of you know, this summer we spent a great deal of time and energy tending to our new community garden. We had tremendous success! I was optimistic from the beginning, but I’m not sure even I was fully prepared for how great a start it’s been. We give thanks to God for this vibrant growth. We give thanks to God for the food, fellowship and awareness the garden’s provided for this community. When we set out on this adventure a year ago, we envisioned a garden that would cultivate a desire in us to grow closer to God and to each other as well as expose a thirst in us to come together on common ground (Please excuse the puns). That common ground is found in our community in Christ, and as we come closer together in this Christian community, we begin to chip away at those other powers in our lives that pull us in all sorts of directions.

However, the garden is just the beginning. It provides a drafting table for our imagination, helping us navigate our path to sustainable growth as a congregation. Jesus often used agrarian language and examples to teach followers about God’s love and rule—partly because it was heavily intertwined with the economics of the time, but also because agriculture is a natural and observable media for growth. One can start a garden in the backyard and immediately observe what’s working or not. We

know that plants need water, food, and sunlight, so naturally we look at these elements first before breaking ground. We ask the very simple questions: will my plants get enough morning sun in this spot? Is there adequate drainage/will the soil hold the water a plant needs? Of course we can move to more sophisticated questions: how much space do certain plants need? What plants grow better next to each other?

In fact when we broke ground in the early spring on the garden, we wanted to create plant beds that provided the best possible opportunity for plant growth. Additionally, we wanted to create pathways that provided full accessibility to the plant beds. Just as we carefully planned the construction of the garden, we too should put as much time, thoughtfulness and effort in the growth of our congregation.

All of these observations can transition into building sound community infrastructure. If we focus on how we organize ourselves as a congregation, we can ask some of these same questions. When we create a ministry, are we giving it enough space to grow? Are we providing adequate resources to the ministry? Is there an accessible path for folks to tend to it? This year, I challenge all of us to start thinking about these questions when approaching every aspect of our life together. The session and I plan to do the same when planning worship, learning, and service opportunities.

As Promised…Whole30 OverviewInformation from https://whole30.com/whole30-program-rules/ ©2018 Thirty & Co, LLC

What is the Whole30? From Co-Creator Melissa Hartwig

Certain food groups (like sugar, grains, dairy and legumes) could be having a negative impact on your health and fitness without you even realizing it. Are your energy levels inconsistent or non-existent? Do you have aches and pains that can’t be explained by over-use or injury? Are you having a hard time losing weight no matter how hard you try? Do you have some sort of condition, like skin issues, digestive ailments, seasonal allergies, or chronic pain, that medication hasn’t helped? These symptoms are often directly related to the foods you eat—even the “healthy” stuff. So how do you know if (and how) these foods are affecting you?

Strip them from your diet completely. Eliminate the most common craving-inducing, blood sugar disrupting, gut-damaging, inflammatory food groups for a full 30 days. Let your body heal and recover from whatever effects those foods may be causing. Push the reset button with your health, habits, and relationship with food, and the downstream physical and psychological effects of the food choices you’ve been making. Learn how the foods you’ve been eating are actually affecting your day-to-day life, long term health, body composition, and feelings around food. The most important reason to keep reading?

This will change your life.

I cannot possibly put enough emphasis on this simple fact—the next 30 days will change your life. It will change the way you think about food. It will change your tastes. It will change your habits and your cravings. It will restore a healthy emotional relationship with food, and with your body. It has the potential to change the way you eat for the rest of your life. I know this because I did it, and millions of people have done it since, and it changed my life (and their lives) in a dramatic and permanent fashion.

HEALTH POINTS

I usually confine these articles to subjects of health such as heart, diabetes, exercise, diet and other information that relates to the preventive aspects – positive things we can do to keep well. Several weeks ago People’s Pharmacy broadcast an alarming report that highlights our huge dependence on drugs that are manufactured in China. Why should we worry about drugs from China? Many of the products we buy are “made in China.”

Rosemary Gibson, senior advisor at the Hastings Center, a Health Care Ethics Institute, and author of China Rx, pointed out many reasons that this matters. In her words, our growing pool of drugs from China is a “ticking time bomb”, leaving us vulnerable in a really scary way. If the supply were suddenly cut off (war, tariff disputers, political revenge) our pharmacy shelves would be empty within months, and our hospitals shut down. Whoa!

Quality: We have already had several scenarios that are troubling. Heparin produced in China contained a substitute ingredient that caused 250 known deaths and many illnesses. More recently, there was a serious problem with vaccines – falsified records, weak solutions that may not do the job. Valsartin, a hypertension drug, was deliberately contaminated with a carcinogen and had to be recalled.

Secrecy: There is no way to prosecute those responsible for these events – we have no leverage. Our FDA, the gold standard across the globe for quality control of drugs, has little authority in a foreign country. They must give notice of inspections, not necessary in a domestic setting. Our drug companies, having moved out of the U.S. for a cheaper bottom line, are not helpful. China has no consumer protection laws. The problems are insidious and hard to prove – a carcinogen may take 20 – 30 years to do the deed. The active ingredients of any drug may be bought from multiple countries…with questionable QC.

Solutions: Stop treating medications as commodities – we track oil and corn, know the sources, ingredient origins, volumes, needs, etc. – why not drugs?; research synthetic alternatives; understand the barriers to inspections; promote incentives for rebuilding our domestic drug industry. Personally, be aware of the problem – ask questions and quiz your legislators.

NOAH’S ARK PRESCHOOL

It’s back to school time! Registration has come in steady throughout the summer, but there are still a handful of spaces left in the Toddler Time class and Pre-K class. If anyone has a friend or family member interested in Noah’s Ark Preschool, please send them our way!

Throughout the school year, donations are always welcome. I will place a board in the preschool hallway during our Open House on September 4th. Items that are helpful include: copy paper, white cardstock, small disposable cups, napkins, Lysol spray, Lysol Wipes, and hand-soap. The donations and contributions that were received last year from preschool families and church members were so bountiful. Anytime that donations are made to the preschool, they are greatly appreciated and used.

If anyone is interested in volunteering at the preschool, please place a note in the Noah’s Ark Preschool mailbox with contact information. One day a month or help at one of our programs will help assist the teachers and increase their time with students.

Thank you! Your Sister in Christ,

Kelly Squires, Preschool Director
