In Vietnamese, it is known as Tet Trung Thu, and it marks the end of the harvest season, a

joyful time of year when the weather is cooler and families can spend more precious time

together.

There is a wonderful sense of anticipation in the weeks leading up to the festival.

Shopfronts blossom with elaborate masks and colourful lanterns, and lively music fills the

streets as high-spirited dancers begin rehearsing.

Children will visit houses in the neighbourhood to perform the lion dance – believed to

bring luck and prosperity-accompanied by the smiling moon-faced Ong Dia (Earth God),

a reminder to give thanks for nature’s abundance.

Another distinctive part of the mid-autumn celebration is the banh trung thu or

mooncake, the traditional, intricately detailed cakes that come in a variety of creative

sweet and savoury fillings.

You can visit nearby Hoi An, famed for its full-moon revelry, while here at the resort, little

travellers can create their very own star-shaped lantern, a symbol of the festival, at our

Lantern Making Class.

The Son Tra Nature reserve is one of Vietnam’s last coastal rainforests, and is known as the green lungs of Da Nang. Our unique location allows us the capability of observing incredibly rare wildlife up close and we pride ourselves on living peaceably with nature, including the inquisitive creatures that come with it.

As the resident zoologist and conservationist here at the resort I would like to bring your attention to the two primates who share our home with us and how with your actions you can help continue to sustain the harmonious relationship we have achieved.

The Rhesus moacaque monkey commonly seen all around Asia will most likely pay you a visit at some point during your stay. These highly clever creatures continue to amaze us with their intelligence, and will be looking for balcony doors left open to quickly take your in-room snacks. We are trying our best to make sure they forage from their natural environment and that their families are supported with the correct diet. When you are away please make sure you close and lock your windows and doors. It is essential that you do not feed the monkeys in any way; they will become a pest to you and expect food from you for the rest of your stay. Please take pictures and observe from a distance. These are animals in their natural habital, thus never approach or try to touch them. Actions like smiling, staring and pointing are considered threats in the monkey world, so please keep this in mind.

Join our Wildlife Workshop and take a tour to discover Son Tra’s biodiversity alongside our resort zoologist. Dedicated to raising awareness on wildlife conservation, in this newest in-house activity, guests will have a chance to meet some of the unique species on the peninsula using binoculars and a spotting scope!

Zoologist Anthony Barker brings a comprehensive background in green consultation and terrestrial and marine wildife conservation to the resort. Drawing on his experience in wildlife monitoring from Wales, Anthony looks forward to gathering extensive data on the douc population, which will enable him to provide fresh perspectives in his critical role at the resort.

You may also catch a glimpse of one of the most colourful yet most endangered primates on earth, the Red-Shanked Douc Langur, estimated at only 2,000 left in the world. The Son Tra peninsula is one of the only places you will get the chance to see them. These are much more shy compared to our Rhesus macaques and will usually stay high in the trees. Should you be lucky enough to spot one, please observe quietly; the resort’s trees offer an important feeding ground for the local families and it is essential we encourage them to be within our resort without feeling threatened. Please avoid making eye contact and trying to get their attention, so they can feed and migrate through in peace.

Lastly, please remember that the wildlife here is indeed wild; in no way do we try and modify the environment to support us. We do our best to change our behaviours to support the natural environment and to protect the intriguing plants and animals within our family.
