23rd Sunday Ordinary 9th September 2018

Year B

2018 Annual Catholic Campaign Appeal Weekend.

In the Gospel today we hear of one of Jesus’ healings – this time of a man who

was deaf mute but who, by the touch of Jesus, begins to hear and therefore to

speak. As with all his healing miracles, Jesus brings the man back into the

human community from the isolation to which his deafness and muteness had

condemned him. The outcast finally comes home.

What the prophet Isaiah foretold, Jesus now does; and what Jesus did then, the

Church does now. A Church which doesn’t open the eyes of the blind and the

ears of the deaf, which doesn’t help the lame to leap like a deer and the tongue

of the mute to sing for joy can’t be the Church of Jesus Christ.

That’s why we have the services of the Church, some of the most important of

which are supported by the Annual Catholic Campaign. These are services of a missionary Church that reaches

out to those who are physically, spiritually, emotionally and intellectually cast out.

Centacare’s Pastoral Ministries are a hidden but essential outreach of the Church. The MacKillop Catholic School

Access Fund makes Catholic education possible for children whose families are in financial or spiritual crisis. The

Priests Foundation ensures that priests who have given their lives in service are properly cared for when they are

sick or retired, and Holy Spirit Seminary educates future priests so they will be men able to embrace the outcast.

Ours is a very dry land and it can also be a desert of the heart. Please consider a gift today to the Annual

Catholic Campaign and help ensure the waters of compassion break forth in every desert - from thirsty ground

there will come living water, springing up to eternal life.

Among the issues to be debated is the fact that the draft bill will allow for abortion until the day that a baby is born if two doctors agree that “in all the circumstances, the termination should be performed”.

Please consider signing the petition in the back of the church today. This form has been sent to us by the Archbishop’s Office who are collating the information. You are welcome to access or express your views on the Archdiocesan website – https://community.actonit.com.au/aob/

OUR MISSION PRAYER

We, the St Ignatius community, are called to live the good news. We pray that we become the people that Jesus Christ called us to be. We pray that we know the Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit

through knowing Jesus in prayer, scripture and liturgy. We pray that we give hope to others by a practical, personal kindness, affirming each person's dignity, worth and destiny in Christ. May we live out this mission of our Christian vocation in the spirit of St. Ignatius.

The Archdiocese of Brisbane holds that children, young people and vulnerable adults are a gift from God with

an intrinsic right to dignity of life, respect and security from physical and emotional harm.

They are to treasured, nurtured and safeguarded by all.
