The 61st ARD International Music Competition 2012 in Munich is open for the following categories:

ClarinetVoiceString Quartet

The invitation to participate in this competition is extended to young musicians, who are ready to launch an international career.

The competition is open to musicians of all nations for clarinet born between 1983 and 1995, for voice born between 1980 and 1992 and for string quartet born between 1983 and 1995 (average age maximum 29 years: one member may be older).

The competition will be conducted during the period from September 6 to 21, 2012 (including the prize winners’ concerts).

The auditions are open to the public.

Deadline for registration: March 31, 2012

OsnabrückMusicPrizeThe Osnabrück Music Prize, made possible by the Werner Egerland Foundation, in the amount of c 7,500 is awarded to a finalist in the categories clarinet or voice. It is linked to a concert with the Osnabrück Symphony in January/February 2013.

SpecialPrize“Primalamusica”The Prize in the amount of c 5,000 will be awarded by Ms Krista Pfleiderer to a prize winner or finalist in the category clarinet or voice. It is linked to three concerts with orchestra.

BuschBrothersPrizeThe Busch Brothers Circle awards the Busch Brothers Prize in the amount of c 3,000 – in collaboration with the South Westphalian Philharmonic – to an outstanding finalist in the category clarinet. It is linked to a concert appearance at the Busch Brothers Circle and potential subsequent concerts with the South Westphalian Phil-harmonic.

ifpMusicPrizeThe special prize from ifp Cologne in the amount of c 3,000 is awarded for outstanding achievement in the category voice.

AudiencePrizesAudience prizes totaling c 6,000 made possible by the Theodor Rogler Foundation will be awarded in the final round as follows:– Clarinet in the amount of c 1,500– Voice Female in the amount of c 1,500– Voice Male in the amount of c 1,500– String Quartet in the amount of c 1,500

The prize in amount of c 2,500 is linked to a chamber concert in Munich. Further engagements can be announced from other Associations of the Freunde Junger Musiker in Berlin, Bremen, Frankfurt/Main, Kassel, Köln, Bonn, Mainz, Wiesbaden, Meerbusch and Düssel-dorf.

SpecialPrizefromNeuePhilharmonieWestfalenNeue Philharmonie Westfalen will award a Special Prize in the amount of c 6,000 to a finalist in the category clarinet. The prize is linked to four concerts with the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen in the season 2013/2014.

ApplicationThe following documentation should be enclosed:– application form (Download from February 2012:

www.ard-musikwettbewerb.de)– for the pre-selection, a personally recorded CD:

the CD may not be edited, may not be processed and may not be older than one year (the works required for the pre-selection can be found in the repertoire condi-tions). Cuts, editing or other technological manipulation of pitches or lengths of held notes within the sections performed are not permitted.

– a declaration by the recording studio/engineer on the recording of the CD – cf. application form

– two recommendations from prominent musical personalities

– in the case of students, the approval of the teacher– an artistic curriculum vitæ– a portrait photograph of the applicant, which will

appear in the competition program, black& white or color (also in TIF format, minimum 300 dpi, can be sent digitally)

Important for shipping: Do not declare the recording with any value, due to a large sum of customs charges thereby incurred!

AdmissionOnce the selection has been made, the decision of the pre-selection jury, made up of members of the compe-tition jury along with the artistic director, on admission to the competition will be released by June 15, 2012 at the latest. Its decisions are final and incontestable. No expla-nations will be provided.

The chosen competitors will receive written notifica-tion of their selection. Competitors from abroad can, if necessary, use this confirmation to apply for an entry visa.

RecognitionofConditionsWith the application for the competition the participant acknowledges acceptance of the participation and competition conditions as well as the decision of the pre-selection jury and the competition jury as binding. There is no right of appeal.

Participation is only possible in one of the competition categories.

Applications that do not meet the requirements of the competition can be rejected. Submitted documents and sound recordings cannot be returned.

ParticipationFeeFollowing receipt of the admission confirmation, the participation fee of c 100 for soloists and c 180 for string quartets must be transferred “free of bank charges for the recipient” at the latest by July 31, 2012. Should the competitor be prevented from attending, or should he or she cancel his or her participation, this participation fee cannot be refunded.

JuryThe jury will be selected from among personalities with international reputations without regard to ethnic, ideological, political or linguistic considerations.

The decisions of the jury cannot be contested.

StudentsofaJuryMemberIf there is a student of a jury member among the par-ticipants, this jury member may not take part in the appraisal of this competitor.

Jury members are not allowed to teach their students during the competition itself, otherwise the student, the jury member, or both may be disqualified. To this end, a student is defined as someone who studied with a jury member for a lengthy and continuous period, and such study was completed less than three years before the beginning of the competition. Participation in master classes is not affected.

CompetitionRoundsFour competition rounds are obligatory in all categories.

The semi-final for clarinet will be accompanied by the Munich Chamber Orchestra without conductor. The semi-final for voice will be accompanied by the Münchner Rundfunkorchester with conductor. A maximum of six instrumentalists and six string quartets will be admitted to the semi-finals. In category voice a maximum of six female and six male singers will be admitted to the semi-final.

The final round will be accompanied by the Sympho-nieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks for the catego-ries clarinet and voice.

A maximum of four semi-finalists will be admitted to the final round in each category.

FirstAuditionDateAll participants will receive notification of the scheduled date and time of their first audition – along with the admission to the competition – in writing.

CompetitionProgramThe following repertoire lists and the conditions therein contained are binding for the competition program.

The competition program submitted by the com-petitors is binding. Subsequent alterations are not per-mitted.

No works in the competition program may be repeated except on the express wish of the jury. The sequence of performance is at the participant’s discretion. If possible, original text editions should be performed.

Participants will not be allowed to perform their own compositions.

In certain cases, the jury may allow only selections of individual works to be performed in the first two compe-tition rounds, or may select works from the submitted repertoire.

PianoAccompanistsOfficial piano accompanists are available at no charge to the competitors in categories clarinet and voice.

Each competitor will receive at least two rehearsals with the accompanist.

Participants may bring along their personal accompa-nist at their own expense.

PresenceoftheParticipantattheCompetitionEach participant has to register personally at the central competition office one day before the first audition and present his or her passport, ID card or officially recognized birth certificate, and should not leave Munich as long as he or she is an active participant in the competition with-out the express approval of the competition manage-ment (prize winners may first depart after September 21, 2012).

Each participant accepts the obligation to remain free of all professional obligations or concerts throughout the duration of the competition.

AccommodationduringtheCompetitionFor the duration of the first round, reasonably priced hotels will be recommended to the participants.

All competitors who reach the second round will be provided by the competition management with the cost of accommodation and meals from this point for the duration of their further participation in the audition process. This does not apply to piano accompanists or other companions.

All competitors who reach the semi-final will be guests of the competition until the prize winners’ concerts.

AwardsCeremonyThe awards ceremony will take place after the prize winners’ concert on September 21.

Competitors will be expected to receive their awards in person.

PrizeWinners’ConcertAt the prize winners’ concerts, chamber music works and works for soloists with orchestral accompaniment will be performed. The decision regarding the program and at which concert specific participants will appear will be made by the competition management in conjunction with the jury and the music department of Bayerischer Rundfunk.

Prize winners will receive no fee for their participation in the prize winners’ concerts.

MediaExploitationThe Competition, including the prize winners’ concerts, will be recorded by Bayerischer Rundfunk. These record-ings can be used for broadcasting (radio or television, including on-line) in full and/or in selections, live or at a later time, and also provided for individual access inde-pendent of the type of receiver and also be made publicly available. Other broadcasters in Germany and abroad can make use of these recordings simultaneously or at a later time. Further use of our broadcasts and availabilities regardless of time and place (in full, in part or in selec-tions) are possible.

The administration of the Competition reserves the right to use the recordings of the Competition rounds and prize winners’ concerts for the production of a CD and/or a DVD to serve as publicity for the prize winners and documentation of the Competition. The administration of the Competition further reserves the right to release or have released, and/or distribute or have distributed, itself or through third parties, commercially or non-commer-cially, any and all material from the Competition in audio or audio-visual form, on analogue or digital sound/image/sound-image data carriers including platforms, regardless of format or process. The declaration of agree-ment required from the prize winners is regarded as given with the application to the ARD International Music Competition, the same applies to the transfer of rights in accordance with the aforementioned stipulations. The prize winners have no claim to additional compensation of any kind.

PreliminaryRemarksThe repertoire to be presented at the 2012 ARD Inter-national Music Competition in the voice category must cover the baroque, classical, romantic and 20th century periods. Each participant must sing in at least three European languages in the course of the Competition.

The order of performance in all rounds may be determined by the participant.

In the first round, the participant may determine the first work to be performed from the repertoire submitted therefor.

With the exception of oratorios and the commissioned work, everything must be performed from memory.

Participants are obligated to sing in the original lan-guages. Art songs may be transposed. This necessarily has to be stated when the program is submitted.

The participants must decide between the two following groups: either focus on concert or focus on opera.

As of the semi-final with orchestral accompaniment, the repertoire must be selected from the repertoire list stipulated by the Competition. Arias with cabalettas or “B-sections” must be performed in full (e.g. Anna Bolena “Piangete voi?” with the cabaletta “Coppia iniqua”).

All in all, preparations should be made in accordance with the following stipulations:

Focus on operaAt least 14 arias, at least six of which must be taken from the repertoire list stipulated by the Competition and at least six art songs.

Focus on concertAt least ten arias, at least three of which must be taken from the repertoire list stipulated by the Competition and at least ten art songs.

Pre-selectionwithrecording

Two arias or one aria and an art song of the partici-Two arias or one aria and an art song of the partici-pant’s choice.

Both works may be repeated in the Competition.

Firstround(withpianoaccompaniment)

Three pieces to be freely chosen. They must contain one aria or one song by W. A. Mozart and an operatic or oratorio aria from the romantic era.

One of these arias must be performed at first. It may be selected by the competitor himself.

The jury may subsequently require and determine a second one of these three works selected by the com-petitor.

Secondround(withpianoaccompaniment)

Two works the jury will select from the repertoire list submitted by the competitor.

In addition, the competitor is to sing one operatic aria, one art song or one oratorio aria to be freely chosen.
