The second reading this Sunday ends beautifully with the words above. Indeed, love is the essence of our faith. It is why we gather every Sunday at Mass, and why we live in the image and likeness of God. Where God reigns, love reigns. The Lord freely bestows on us the gift of His love, without any qualification or merit on our part.

School News Our students’ daily routines include

morning meetings with their respective teachers and an all school morning prayer with the principal (accompanied by office staff and/or our student council). Kindergarten successfully went on breaks and came back on time to their Zoom meetings. Sec-ond to 3rd graders also learned time management using timers (that ring loudly like school bells) for breaks. Upper grades, such as 6th grade, became fa-miliar with Zoom breakout rooms and moving from room to room. For fun, 8th graders discovered and shared what animals were suited best for their per-sonalities. Seventh graders created identity slides to share what makes them, them, and 5th graders intro-duced their pets.

The Reflections

Pastor’s Corner Continued from page 1 This Sunday we are grateful to God for blessing us with the celebration of 60 years as a parish community. On June 25, 1960, Most Reverend John Mitty appointed the Reverend Fr. Elwood Geary as first pastor of this newly established parish on Moorpark Avenue amidst the vast orchards in bloom. Mass was celebrated at Mother Butler High School Auditorium, where the present Harker Academy stands on Saratoga Avenue, while the construction of a new church began. The new church was completed in December 1961, and the first Mass celebrated was on the Feast of the Im-maculate Conception, the 8th of December, 1961. On the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima, 13th of May, 1962, the Archbishop of San Francisco at the time, Most Reverend Joseph T. McGucken, “solemnly blessed the new Church in San Jose, in honor of Queen of Apostles according to the form found in the Roman Ritual.” Then, December 5, 1963 marked the beginning of the construction of the new parish school. The building was completed by the beginning of the school year in September 1964, and staffed by two Religious of the Sacred Heart and one lay teacher. Over the years, the parish grew, and the succession of pastors came to serve the people of God in this northwest part of San Jose. In prayer let us remember Fathers Elwood Geary (1960-1979), Richard C. Fry (1979-1985), Bertrand Clemens, SM (1985-1988), Joseph Stefanelli, SM (Jan-Oct 1989), James Mifsud, SM (Nov 1989-2007), Michael Carson (2007-2013), and Thuc Si Ho (2013-2019), and those unnamed parochial vicars who faithfully served with love those entrusted to their pastoral care. We gather today in thanksgiving for those who have been part of this parish community and for us the present generation, that as we live to our baptismal promises we may steadfastly be faithful to God’s love and His will to serve one another. The most sacred time of our journey of faith as Catholics is this moment as we gather to celebrate and participate in Holy Eucharist. The Eucharist is the life, death, resurrection and glorifi-cation of our Lord Jesus Christ where we profess our baptismal identity as sons and daughters of our Father in the Lord, Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit. Thus, we are one family, one community of faith, one communion of love, one parish of Queen of Apostles. Each one of us is joined to all others who receive the Lord – every one of us is in the Body of Christ. As one Body in Christ, we are not perfect, but we strive to live in the call to perfection and holiness and persevere to love each day. What is important is that we try to love, and, in our trying, we are truly men and women in the Body of Christ. Let us continue to share His love with others. Let us labor to build up the Church through re-sponsible love toward our sisters and brothers. We are one family under the maternal care of Mary, Queen of Apostles.

The Reflections

Social justice corner Fraternal Charity

Do you believe that you practice fraternal charity on a regular basis? Wait, do you know what that even is? The Catholic Dictionary states, “The practice of charity with a love that recognizes another person as a child of God, and therefore as brother or sister in the Lord.” Think about that. It’s not just your family, parish friends and neighbors. That’s every-one! It might even be someone you do not like.

Today’s readings are repetitive messages of following Gods’ laws, both the old testament and new testament laws. In the first reading, Ezekiel is appointed watchman and personally held responsible if he does not warn others. In the second reading, Paul reminds the people that love means caring for others in the same way they have experienced being loved by GOD. Finally, in the Gospel, Jesus expands on the notions of fraternal charity by asking God’s children to do something that some could see as passing judgement on others. Jesus has asked his followers to confront those who have gotten out of alignment with the message of the Gospel. I know people who do this well. I watch and try to learn, and sometimes wonder if the message is not meant for me.

Fraternal Charity is something I need to work at. I am good with my immediate family at giving gentle re-minders along with the occasional, “Do you think it’s time to go to confession?”. In the Gospel, Jesus pretty much told us exactly what steps to take. It is important to remember you do not need to be a saint to reach out to others and share the Gospel message. It is not always about telling someone they are doing something wrong. It could be how to do it differently with an undertone of pure love. How and where will you practice fraternal charity this week?
