Maternal Admonition
(23
rd
Ordinary Sunday: Ezekiel 33:79; Romans 13:810;
Matthew 18:1520)

In today’s Gospel, Jesus foresees that conflicts will
inevitably arise between members of his Church.

His first concern is that the matter be resolved peacefully.
It must not be allowed to fester, leading to serious
divisions that might spread into the community.

It is equally important, however, that the issue be kept
within the Church. In 1 Corinthians 6, St. Paul complains
about believers bringing cases to civil courts: “Can it be
that there is not one among you wise enough to be able
to settle a case between brothers? But rather brother
goes to court against brother, and that before
unbelievers?”

Many religious communities have (or had) an exercise
called “fraternal admonition.” In pairs or small groups,
members point out one another’s failings. Ideally, each
would take the comments to heart with gratitude and
strive to improve oneself.

Some might even be called to a more prophetic stance,
especially if they believe that the community itself is in
danger of going astray. Like Ezekiel, they feel a personal
responsibility to challenge others.

The hard thing in all this is to be faithful to the
commandment, “You shall love your neighbor as
yourself.” We ought to behave towards one another
without giving or taking offense, and with no hardening of
the heart. Then the issue of reconciliation does not arise.

However, since the Church is made up of real persons,
occasional conflict will arise, ranging anywhere from
strong differences of opinion to serious accusations of
wrongdoing. The first condition for reconciliation that it be
genuinely desired by both parties.

What does any of this have to do with La Salette, one
might ask? A great deal. Mary addressed herself to a
people absorbed with their own troubles and blaming
God. They had so lost sight of Christ, that reconciliation
did not even occur to them.

It took a Beautiful Lady, speaking in prophetic terms, to
make them see that reconciliation was desirable and
achievable. Through her tears, she offered a maternal
admonition, giving us a model of the truly reconciling
heart.

Celebration of the Feast of the Apparition of Our Lady of La Salette
Beginning of the Marian Year in preparation for the 175th Anniversary

Mary Queen Catholic Church has been served by the Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette since the very first Mass
was celebrated in September, 1965 in Friendswood. We reserve a special time in September to honor the Mother of
God, Mary of La Salette, as well as to offer prayerful gratitude to the many La Salette Missionaries who have served
God's people of faith. This year the La Salette Missionaries observe as a MARIAN YEAR in preparation for the
celebration of the 175th Anniversary of the Apparition of Our Lady of La Salette to Maximin and Melanie in 1846. So
each day of novena let us try to reflect on the different messages that she gave to us through the children.

After the five sessions of the Presence Series, we have

understanding of God's true presence in the world today.

All are invited to join us for a videobased study on

Power of Confession

The Forgiven Series provides the Church’s teaching
about the sacrament of Confession, including a practical
“walk through” of what happens in the confessional and
how every moment connects to Scripture, Catholic
Tradition and God’s passionate desire to be with you. It is
a beautiful presentation of the transforming power of
Confession.

Men’s Ministry Challenge to Honor Father Moe
As you know, Mary Queen
has established a Memorial
Fund to honor Father Moe
Linehan’s life. Gifts to this
fund are used for a
technology ministry to reach out to people in our own
parish and beyond, by livestreaming Masses, Holy Hours
or other opportunities of prayer to help us focus on what is
central in our faith and formation. All gifts received to
this Memorial Fund in August and September will be
matched dollar for dollar (up to $15,000) by the Men’s
Ministry. Please take advantage of this opportunity to
double the impact of your donations. We invite you to
make a gift to the Father Moe Memorial Fund which will
honor his legacy, as well as share in our important Mary
Queen Ministry of evangelization and pastoral outreach
through today’s technology.

Meet our new Echo Apprentice
You may remember our previous Echo Apprentice,
Elizabeth Clarke who was with us from 2016 to 2018.
Now, we are excited to welcome our new Echo
Apprentice, Emily Daversa to our Mary Queen community.
She will be with us for the next two years. Emily hails from
Massachusetts and is a recent graduate from Stone Hill
College, where she studied theology and education
studies. Emily and three other Echo Apprentices, who are
assigned to local parishes, are living in Galveston during
their stay.

The Echo program, is administered by the University of
Notre Dame and culminates in a Master’s Degree in
Theology after the completion of the two years. Emily will
work full time while also taking classes. This year, she will
explore our different ministries and take on responsibilities
in a few of them. During her second year at Mary Queen,
she will focus her efforts on one or two ministries and
assume more responsibilities within those.

When asked what she looks forward to at Mary Queen,
Emily said “I’m just really excited to meet everyone and do
what I can to help this community grow in their faith! I look
forward to learning about all the different ministries here,
finding my niche and growing in my faith along with y’all!”
After Echo, she would like to pursue a career in collegiate
campus ministry/young adult ministry. Welcome Emily!

Gospel Meditation
September 6, 2020
23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

It’s all about reconciliation and conversion, not
punishment. Relationships are not static adventures but
wonderful gifts that continue to develop, grow, change,
and mature. We are meant to be social beings, so
isolating ourselves from others is rarely helpful. But,
because human beings are on the one hand
tremendously gifted, talented, and blessed creations, they
are on the other also flawed, broken, and sinful. We all
need to humbly admit that we are works in progress and
not only capable of enriching each other’s lives but
causing deep hurts and wounds as well. Hence, we
always need to be reconciled. We are always growing,
changing, and expanding our knowledge of who we are
and how we are meant to share life together.

Because reconciliation and conversion are always part of
the mix of life, honesty is crucial. Without honesty, we can
easily find ourselves living a lie and causing more harm
than good. Being able to freely share our feelings,
especially those involving pain and hurt, is a charism
necessary to pursue and an art to learn. When we are
wronged or wrong someone else, we do not enjoy the
confrontation that can and needs to come. We are taught
to keep our feelings to ourselves, especially when they
are negative, and we tend to avoid difficult conversations.
Hence, we never really learn how to confront another,
successfully resolve conflict, find reconciliation, and
welcome conversion. When we hurt or wrong someone, it
does not mean that we are a bad or sinful person who
deserves only punishment and excommunication. Quite
the opposite! We are simply a human person who can
make poor choices and sin and can be forgiven. We can
restore and deepen the relationship that has been
affected and find our way home again.

Jesus clearly wants to avoid shame because it has no
purpose in achieving reconciliation and conversion. All
broken relationships deserve a chance at reconciliation.
Every person has room for growth and a need for
conversion. We have to learn to be okay with honesty and
not be afraid to hear and process what someone needs to
say, even if it is difficult for us to hear. Severing a
relationship, both personally or with the church community
as a whole, ought to definitely be a last resort and only
pursued when all else has failed. ©LPi

training is approximately 60 minutes. They are available in

Senior Savings Ministry
Senior Savings is a Ministry established with the elderly in
mind. This Ministry is available to help review utilities (TV/
Cable, Internet, Land Line Telephone, Cell Phone and
Electric) and to provide possible money saving options on
monthly costs. The Ministry will not dictate what option to
use, it will just provide the options available. If a person
would like to remain with their current provider for service,
in many cases, a better rate can be negotiated. For further
information, please contact Anthony W. Dittrich at 281
8085322.
Church Keepers Needed
This is a group of volunteers who help keep our beautiful
church clean and presentable. It is “light” house (church)
keeping like dusting and cleaning surfaces of the
sanctuary furnishings. Just an hour a week every two
weeks would be a beautiful gift to our parish community.

The Blessing of the Community
I have been blessed to be a member of my parish
community for 28 years. For much of that time I was
serving as a member of the parish staff, but it was still
the community that I call home. I have been fortunate to
be able to remain in that parish even as my life has
encountered new chapters and callings. I am so grateful
to God that I have been able to grow, be nourished, and
find companionship in a parish for this long of a time.

It is a natural tendency for human beings to desire
belonging to something bigger than themselves. Not
everyone is fortunate enough to find the community, big
or small, that fulfills that need. Unfortunately, that means
that many communities suffer from not having the benefit
of the gifts, skills, and talents that any member can offer.
Communities are in many ways living organisms that
move and breathe based upon the individuals who form
that body. A community is truly the sum of its parts.

Your parish community reflects you and everyone else in
that community. The more each member gives to the
community, the stronger that community finds itself. If
you hold back, your community suffers, and you gain
little. I know firsthand what being a part of a community
can mean to a person. I would be no one at all and you
would not be reading this if it weren’t for the life I have
had in my parish community. Tracy Earl Welliver ©LPi
Weekend Mass Worship Aids
In an effort to help minimize exposure, we shall refrain
from using the hymnals, until further notice. Please visit
Mary Queen’s website, app or Facebook page to
download the worship aid for each Mass. You will be able
to utilize your mobile device, computer or tablet to sing
praise and thanksgiving during Mass. This will be
especially beneficial for those who are participating via
the streamed Mass.
