Dear Parishioners and Friends,Let me begin by stating how wonderful it has been having Fr. Firmin in our midst. His gentle and pleasant smile has melted our hearts. His insigtful and short homilies have given us food for thought. He indeed is a man of deep faith.

I have been touched by your outreach to him during the month of August. A number of you have welcomed him into your home and broke bread together (or should I say shared rice together). Last weekend’s collections will be a tremendous help to his mission and the SMA (African Mission Society) to which he belongs. He did not expect the community to gather around him to pray over him at the end of each weekend Mass. It was a tremendous sign of our sending forth our brother to his mission in Liberia. The two soccer balls that many signed will indeed speak to the people to whom he ministers of our concern for them as well.

Congratuations Church--an experience well done.

35TH ANNUAL LAWN PARTY TO BENEFIT SEMINARIANSPope St. John XXIII National Seminary in Weston is hosting its 35th Annual Lawn Party on Wednesday, September 28th, at 6:00 P.M, on the grounds of the seminary. This premiere fundraising event is hosted this year by Bishop Robert Reed. The evening will include a reception and dinner with music. Located on Route 30 in Weston, the seminary prepares second career candidates, men over the age of 30, for priesthood. The proceeds from the Lawn Party help to keep tuition costs affordable. BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUPSaint Eulalia Parish, 50 Ridge Street, Winchester, is offering a Bereavement Support Group which will meet in the Parish Center off the parking lot for six consecutive Tuesday evenings from 6:00-7:30 PM beginning September 20th and continuing through October 25th. Topics will include an overview of the bereavement process, signs and symptoms of grief, feelings associated with bereavement, and the uniqueness of each person’s grief. Participants will have the opportunity to share their experiences with one another in a caring and supportive atmosphere. Pre-registration is required by September 10th. No fee, but a voluntary donation is appreciated to cover costs of materials. Plumber’s or electrician license a plus! Candidate will work with, and supervise maintenance assistants in executing daily work orders in order of priority. 23RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMESEPTEMBER 4, 2016My Own HeartWhat is life here on earth all about, anyway? We know it is not an easy task.

The First Reading spells out the problem:

Deliberations of mortals are timid, and unsure are our plans. The body weighs down the soul, the earth weighs down the mind. … What is within our grasp we find with difficulty.

These words apply to all life. We have difficult choices, we have problems. What are we supposed to do?

God grant me the serenityto accept the things I cannot change;courage to change the things I can;and wisdom to know the difference.*

This is the Serenity Prayer, well-known, possibly trite to some people. But it shows the essence of humility: be who you are, not more, not less. Trust in God for everything you cannot do and for everything you can do. Let go, let God.

So, that is the first answer. Life here on earth, even though timid and weighed down, is about humility.

The second answer is love. Real, toiling, sweating love.

Taking up our cross sends us out with Jesus to help others carry theirs.

Look at the apostle Paul in the Second Reading—the formerly fiery, tempestuous Paul—now an old man and in prison. We are reading a personal letter here, one he wrote to Philemon. It turns out that Philemon’s slave Onesimus ran away and ended up being with Paul, who was in prison. Paul says, touchingly, that he became a father to Onesimus, converted him to Christianity and now sends him back to Philemon not as a slave but “as a man and in the Lord”!

Listen to the language Paul uses. “I am sending him, that is, my own heart, back to you.” Onesimus is not a piece of chattel. Paul is sending someone so dear to him that he refers to the man as “his own heart.”

This is true personal love. It is what life here on earth is all about.

As the third answer, Jesus says (surprisingly) that he wants you to

1. hate your father, mother, children, brothers, sisters,         and your own life,

2. renounce all your possessions,

3. carry your own cross just as he carries his.

Shocking, but not as bad as it might first seem. Let’s look.1. The word “hate” is probably an oratorical way to

say “love them in proportion.” If you allow love of God be first in your life, then your beloved family will come right along with it. If you do not, you will lose them. “Hate” means not having anyone get overboard in their importance to you.

2. “Renounce all your possessions.” If you are tempted to love material things more than anything else, then renounce them. It is God you

need to love above all things, and everything else in proportion.

3. We are supposed to carry a cross? Why? Because it is far too easy for us to pretend that the world really is not painful, that no one actually suffers. But they do and we do, in a big way. Taking up our cross sends us out with Jesus to help others carry theirs.

4.And that is the real and final answer to the problems presented in the First Reading. What is life about here on earth? It is about being humble, about loving others truly, and about loving God above all things.

THE PERSPECTIVE OF JUSTICEA Person of CharityWe Christians tend to gloss over the most startling one-liners passed down to us from Jesus such as the one that closes today’s Gospel: “None of you can be my disciple if he does not renounce all his possessions.”

The statement shocks, and yet it reflects that basic human wisdom which tells us that “the corruptible body burdens the soul and the earthen shelter weighs down the mind that has many concerns.”

The issue, then, is true freedom, the ability to follow Onesimus (Second Reading) out of slavery. The other issue involved here is true worship, the question of priority in our lives: who or what is more important. God or our possessions?

Today’s liturgy encourages us to put God first, to long for God “like a deer that longs for running streams,” and to recognize that “in every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge.”

It is not evil to want God to prosper the work of our hands. It is evil to make a god of creatures and to replace worship of the true God with worship of worldly possessions.

It is not merely a matter of ‘giving from one’s surplus,’ but of helping entire peoples, who are presently excluded or marginalized, to enter into the sphere of economic and human development.

For this to happen, it is not enough to draw on the surplus goods which in fact our world abundantly produces; it requires above all a change of lifestyles, of models of psroduction and consumption, and of the established structures of power which today govern societies

There are some people—the few who possess much—who do not really succeed in ‘being’

because, through a reversal of the hierarchy of values, they are hindered by the cult of having …

The evil does not consist in ‘having’ as such, but in possessing without regard for the quality and the ordered hierarchy of the goods one has.

Quality and hierarchy arise from the subordination of goods and their availability to man’s ‘being’ and his true vocation.

Most of us are from within parish boundaries in Melrose and Saugus, but we have parishioners from as far afield as Georgetown and Framingham! ADULT INITIATION, RCIAWe are always ready to begin the process by which an adult or older child becomes a Catholic, either by full initiation in baptism, or by reception into full communion. We are also happy to prepare you for adult Confirmation. Contact Fr. Ron.

BAPTISM FOR INFANTSNormally, the baptism of infants is celebrated within the Sunday assembly at a time convenient to the parents. Parents must be parishioners here or have a letter of permission from their pastor. Fr. Ron is the staff contact person for preparation.

GENERATIONS OF FAITHWe are a community of life-long learners. Our parish program of inter-generational learning and celebration of faith is called Generations of Faith. We all meet together several times a year for “Faith Festivals,” and many opportunities for adult learning and enrichment are offered in the bulletin and programs. Materials are in the Church or available at our Faith Formation Office through Ann Lahiff.

MARRIAGEThe engaged couple must contact the Rectory at least six months in advance, preferably a year ahead. One must be a parishioner, or have permission by his or her own pastor to celebrate the marriage with us.

CARE OF THE SICK To arrange for the Sacrament of the Sick, for Holy Communion for the home-bound, or Viaticum for the Dying, please contact the parish office. We normally send ministers out with communion after the eight o’clock on Sunday, and also schedule regular home visits during the week. It is always possible to anoint the sick during regularly scheduled liturgies. All you have to do is ask!

ORDER of CHRISTIAN FUNERALSWe will work with you to plan your own funeral liturgy or that of a loved one, and are prepared to celebrate the Vigil, also known as the “Wake,” in the Church building for those who choose.
