The phrase One bad apple spoils the whole bunchrefers to the spread of mold or decay from one infectedapple to the rest. I remember we had a special shelf in agarden shed at home where we stored apples through
the winter, and how careful we were to lay out theapples slightly apart, none touching, so that theoccasional bad one would not affect the rest. The idea isfound as far back as the fourteenth century, when the
medieval English poet Geoffrey Chaucer wrote: Better take a rotten applefrom the hoard / than let it lie to spoil the good ones there. Of course inmodern times we tend to think of people when we talk of rotten apples -the bad individual among a good group who may influence others to dobad things - but that is only part of the story.
Good apples dont do anything, although at least ina barrel of apples they wouldnt pass on disease, butthat is not true of good people. We need some kind
of reverse proverb to explain that good apples inthe community can have a great influence for goodon those around them. Thats part of the messageof the conclusion of todays Gospel: For wheretwo or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. Through thegrace of God, good people strengthen each other.
When we try to build each other up spiritually, the spirit of Jesus ispowerfully present. I think of parents who take the trouble to praywith their children at night; families who say grace at meals; teacherswho pray with their classes; and those like our rosary group whoencourage each other in the ways of prayer. Each one who takes part
in such shared experiences comes out stronger: for example theparents who pray with their child do not just bring blessings to theirchild but themselves grow in grace. Obviously it makes sense to avoidbad apples but we should also seek out holy people and learn fromthem. When you sit in church before Mass with someone who wantsto talk it is distracting, but when you sit with someone who is deep inprayer it will inspire you to spend time with God. Thats why peopleare attracted to visiting monasteries. Its not just the fine buildings andthe sense of history; they are inspired by the community of peoplededicated to God.
This week - and it happens every year in early September - both yourpriests will be away for nearly three days. We will be gathering with
the Bishop and all the priests of the Diocese for the annualConvocation. Its a time of learning, discussion and common prayer. Please pray that as we gather together in Christs name He will be inthe midst of us. Meanwhile we are grateful to Father Patrick Patton, aretired priest from Montana, who will celebrate the 9:00 am Mass onWednesday and Thursday. Please note that the next week (onSeptember 14th) we will resume the 7:00 pm Wednesday eveningMass - another occasion to get together with some good people, comeinto the presence of God, and be built up spiritually.
