A Note From Our Pastor

NEW DEACON ASSIGNMENT

I am very pleased to inform you that the Archdiocese of Detroit has assigned a new permanent deacon to STM. He is Deacon Don Baross. Deacon Don will be leaving his present assignment at St. Rene Goupil Parish (Sterling Heights) and coming to our parish community the weekend of October 5/6. I have asked Deacon Don to write a little bit about himself so we can include it in net week’s bulletin. I know both Deacon Don and Deacon Michael will bless STM with their service. Please give Deacon Don a warm and happy welcome to STM!

PET BLESSING

We will be conducting our annual Pet Blessing Ceremony this coming Saturday at 2:30pm. The Church blesses pets on a day closest to the feast of St. Francis of Assisi (October 4). Our beloved pets are exactly that—beloved—and we love them like family. So please bring your pets for the blessings and let them know you love them “spiritually”, too.

Have a wonderful week enjoying God’s Autumn and please find a place for me in your prayers.

Msgr. Tom Rice

St. Thomas More presents

Bible Study for

Faith Formation Parents

Faith Formation Parents: we know that you care deeply about passing on The Faith to your children. But, it can be difficult to be a good example when we don’t know as much about Sacred Scripture and our faith as we should. Let us help.

Many people want to read the Bible because they know it is God’s Word, but they give up because it seems so complicated. Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible helps you to get the “big picture” of the Bible by showing how fourteen narrative books of the Bible tell the complete story from Adam and Eve to Christ and the Church.

OCTOBER 12 & 13

It’s back! Yes it is what you think! We sit in pretty much the same pew every Mass we attend, but how many can say hello to the person in front or in back of them (also sitting in “their” same pew) by name? The weekend of October 12 & 13 we will make it easier for you to get to know that person behind or next to you. Volunteers and staff will have name tags available before Mass and we ask that you participate and allow fellow parishioners to get to know those around them by name.

As creatures of habit, it is reasonable that even at Sunday Eucharist we can begin to break through the wall of anonymity and take the first step towards building meaningful community. Just like the Cheers theme song says, we really do have a deep desire to go where people know our names.

Page 8 Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

We all have been given great power by God in the form of Time, Talent, and Treasure. Today’s readings remind us that this power is meant to be used for great good. And, the failure to do so has eternal consequences.

We see the urgency for us to put our powers to good use in today’s Gospel passage from Luke. Our Lord tells the rather chilling parable of the rich man who ignored poor Lazarus during their lifetimes. At the moment of the rich man’s death, he goes down to the netherworld while Lazarus is taken to the eternal joy and comfort in the bosom of Abraham. The rich man keenly regrets his indifference towards the needs of Lazarus, but it is too late for regret. His choices have played out, and now the rich man will face the consequences of his failure to use the gifts God gave him.

Pursuit of God’s kingdom and care for the poor are not trifling matters. Our Lord makes this clear to us over and over in the Scriptures and the constant teachings of our 2,000 year-old Church. We are free to ignore these teachings and live instead for ourselves. But there will be tragic results for us in the end. And, because we are made for eternity, living selfishly on this earth doesn’t really bring us true happiness anyway.

So how can we use our great powers for great good? By embracing a stewardship way of life. By putting God first in all areas of our lives — in the way we spend our time, the ways we share our talents, the ways we give of our financial resources. Stewardship living calls us out of our comfort zone and into commitment to the Lord and the things that matter to Him.

Stewardship TIME, TALENT AND TREASURE

Evangelization UNLEASH THE GOSPEL

Jesus said: “Follow Me” by John Hannigan

Last week I wrote how each of us has a vocation, a way we are called by God to live the Gospel and to evangelize. I write this article on the Feast of St. Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist. Matthew was a sinner, a tax collector who cheated his neighbors. He wrote how Jesus called him by simply saying: “Follow me” (Matt 9:9-13). And Matthew did! Jesus, the Divine Physician, called him because he was a sinner: “I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.” Today, Jesus is calling you away from sin, to follow Him more closely, and to heal you and save you.

For the Feast of St. Matthew, the Magnificat, a magazine of daily readings, prayer and meditations, included this poem by one of my favorite poets, Rita A. Simmonds. I think this can be a prayer for everyone who seeks forgiveness, for anyone seeking to know Jesus and how He desires to show us Mercy, and for all those seeking to realize their calling.

He Called These coins I count, pinched from kindred flesh strained from blood, stain my hands and soul mark me deep in debt among my own. A place of no return: No gauge to know the length I’ve gone until a line is thrown: “Follow me.” A rope that reached and begged my heart “take hold.” A voice that leapt into the depths, a rescue and a probe. A way to count among my own, a call I didn’t earn, a chance to leave the coins I’ve squeezed, the lead to my return. I stand up straight and walk away yet dare not even crawl. The debt I owe, I can’t repay. I come this way because He called.

Knight’s Tootsie Roll Drive to Help the Mentally Impaired

St. Thomas More’s “Round Table” Knights of Columbus Council #8659, will be outside of church following all the Masses on the weekend of October 12th and 13th to collect donations to help the mentally impaired in our community.

The Knights have traditionally had a special calling to support the dignity and care of those with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

Please be generous and help support the dedicated local charities that help God’s very special children!

Donations to St. Thomas More

Recently the parish has been receiving donation checks from Sunday offertory that are postdated for a future date. Given the volume of envelopes counted every week, the volunteers are not able to look at every check to make sure the date is accurate. If we deposit a check that is postdated, the bank removes the check from our deposit and returns it to the parish. This is a bookkeeping problem, as we then need to adjust the deposit and pull the envelopes for the parishioner that postdated the check. In recent weeks we have received calls every Monday from the bank letting us know they are deducting checks from our deposit for incorrect dates.

If it is more convenient for managing your funds, you may consider giving electronically. You can sign up with the current e-giving company the parish offers by accessing through the website or contact your bank to issue an e-check to the parish. With either option giving can be done weekly, monthly or other timing that works for you.

Thank you for your continued generosity to the parish. For questions please contact me at the parish office or by email: [email protected].
