From the established WHL veterans alreadydrafted by NHL Clubs, to the top rated prospects for the upcoming NHL Entry Draft, to the new crop ofhighly touted rookies entering the WHL, these young stars will excite fans in all of our WHL markets.The WHL provides an ideal environment for players to develop as they continue to pursue their dreamof playing in the NHL or representing their country in a major international competition. Many of thesetop draft eligible prospects for the 2014 NHL Draft will have the opportunity to showcase their skills asthe WHL hosts the CHL / NHL Top Prospects game, January 15, in Calgary.The WHL also takes great pride in offering our players the best academic and hockey opportunitiespossible, as we award over 325 WHL Scholarships to graduate players each season, while more than 20percent of all NHL players got their start in the WHL.As you cheer on your favorite WHL team in their quest to capture the Ed Chynoweth Cup and a berth inthe MasterCard Memorial Cup, I am sure you will enjoy watching the world’s finest young prospects inaction throughout the WHL.

A Welcome from the President

Welcome back to another exciting year of Kootenay ICE Hockey. With the way the Hockey Club finished last year the 2013-2014 season has the potential to be very special. Mirrored in last place at Christmas, the Club posted the fifth best record in the WHL in the second half of the season and made the playoffs for a 15th straight year, while finishing with a .500 or better record for a 14th consecutive season (which are both the longest active streaks in the WHL).

Our organization has been very fortunate since moving to Cranbrook to enjoy an unparalleled amount of on ice success. This year for the first time in franchise history one of our players has the potential to be the first overall selection in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. With that comes added pressure to perform, but with reigning WHL Coach of the Year, Ryan McGill leading our team, Sam Reinhart and the rest of the players will receive the necessary guidance and leadership in achieving all of their goals.

With the invaluable experience our team gained last season, we expect our returning players along with our new prospects to once again battle for contention in the very competitive Eastern Conference. Our expectations of success both on and off the ice will not change. Our fans have come to expect a team that is hard working on the ice and ambassadors for Cranbrook and the entire East Kootenay region off the ice.

ICE NOTES VS LETHBRIDGEICE CHIPS: The KOOTENAY ICE enter tonight’s action with a 0-2-0-0 record (0-1-0-0 at home, 0-1-0-0 on the road, 0-0-0 in overtime) and tied for fourth place in the CENTRAL DIVISION...The ICE finished the 2012-2013 regular season with a .500 or better record for the 14th consecutive season, which is the longest active streak in the WESTERN HOCKEY LEAGUE...After tonight’s’ game KOOTENAY will host REGINA (September 28) before traveling to CALGARY (October 4).

ROSTER UPDATE: The ICE have 24 players on their roster, including two goalies, eight defensemen and 14 forwards…Of those players, there are two 1993 born players, five 1994 born players, nine 1995 born players, five 1996 born players and three 1997 born players...KOOTENAY begins the 2013-2014 season with 16 returning players from last year.

TRANSACTIONS: KOOTENAY has acquired 18-year-old Forward RYAN CHYNOWETH from the TRI-CITY AMERICANS in exchange for a first round draft pick in either the 2014 or 2015 WHL BANTAM DRAFT (September 25)....The ICE have reas-signed JORDYN BOYD to a to be determined Junior A team (September 24).

TONIGHT’S OPPONENTKootenay: The Lethbridge Hurricanes and Kootenay Ice are playing their first of six games against each other for the 2013-14 season tonight. After opening the season with back-to-back losses to the Medicine Hat Tigers, the Hurricanes are looking to bounce back against the Ice. Kootenay is also looking to bounce back after they dropped their first two games of the season (to Red Deer) and both teams currently sitting in 5th and 6th place in the Central Division.

In one pre-season game against Kootenay, the Hurricanes knocked off the Ice 4-1. The game was played at the “Thunder Chal-lenge” tournament in the Crowsnest Pass on September 13th. In the game, ‘Canes goaltender Jonny Hogue came up with a 35 goal-save performance for the win.

In 2012-2013 season, Lethbridge and Kootenay split their series 3-3 (Sept. 29th: 4-2 win, Dec. 8th: 6-1 win, Feb. 2nd: 3-0 loss, Feb 24th: 2-0 loss, Mar. 12th: 3-1 loss, Mar. 13th: 4-2 win) with Russell Maxwell leading in points in the series with 7 points in 6 games (3G, 4A).

Accomplishments/ Awards:-The leaders: The Lethbridge Hurricanes were proud to announce overage forward Josh Derko as the 23rd Captain in franchise history. He follows in the footsteps of Graham Hood (2012-2013), Brody Sutter, Cam Braes (2011-2012). Assistant Captains were also named this week and include fellow overage forward Brady Ramsay, last season’s goals leader Jaimen Yakubowski, and 16-year-old defenceman Ryan Pilon. -Central Scouting: Two Hurricanes players were listed on Central Scouting’s preliminary list on September 23rd. Centreman Reid Duke and listed Hurricanes player Chase Phelps were listed as “C” North American skaters to watch. In 57 games with the ‘Canes last season, Duke had 24 points (8G, 16A). -NHL Camps: Several Hurricanes players also attended NHL rookie and development camps over the summer and include: Jaimen Yakubowski - Detroit Red Wings Development Camp Macoy Erkamps - Ottawa Senators Development Camp Josh Derko - San Jose Rookie Camp Adam Henry - Chicago Blackhawks Development and Rookie Camp Axel Blomqvist - Winnipeg Jets Development and Rookie Camp
