Chris Auville, FACMPEVMGMA President

Keynote Speaker, September 25

Thank you for considering to join us at the beautiful Kingsmill Resort for our fall confer-ence. The education committee has worked hard to bring you timely topics and engaging speakers for valuable “take aways”. We are excited to have Monica Wofford, who has been a very popular speaker at past conferences and the Lunch & Learn series. She brings valuable information in a humorous manner. VMGMA looks forward to the return of Elizabeth Woodcock, who is nationally known for her knowledge on efficient

operations in all areas of practice management. In this conference, she is zoning in on reimburse-ment and the efficient practice.

As social media has become an intricate part of our practices, don’t miss Nancy Rose Senich’s breakouts, Peter Verlessa’s Creating an App or Branding Your Practice with Holly Van Auken.

These are just a few of the topics we are offering. So pack up the car and join us in Williamsburg!

Prescribing for Chronic Pain: Compliance Challenges and Best PracticesRalph A. Orr, DirectorVirginia Prescription Monitoring Program

Gerald C. Canaan, II, JD, PartnerHancock, Daniel, Johnson & Nagle, P.C.

Karla J. Walker, PharmD, Director, Clinical ToxicologyMedTox LABORATORIES, LabCorp Specialty Testing Group

Joe Gierok, Specialty Development Executive - Clinical Drug TestingMedTox LABORATORIES, LabCorp Specialty Testing Group

Prescribing for chronic pain has drawn intense scrutiny from Federal and State regulators to combat increases in addiction, overdoses and deaths. Drug diversion, drug seeking behavior and non-compliance with medication regimens are constant battles for the prescriber, the staff and the practice manager. Practice managers can no longer assume that prescribers are following the law in this complicated area. What are the laws and regulations that must be followed? What are the universal precautions for prescribing for chronic pain? What are the top

reasons prescribers and their practices get in trouble? What is the Virginia Prescription Monitoring Program and how must a practice use it to determine a patient’s controlled substance prescription history, minimize the risk of duplicating pre-scriptions and prevent potential illegal activity? How can my practice utilize drug screening test results with confidence? The principles of drug screening by immunoassay will be discussed, including the importance of detection limits and cross-reactivities. Identification and quantitation of drugs by chromatographic methods with mass spectrometry will also be reviewed. The panel will also address issues that affect interpre-tation of results, including detection periods, metabolic pat-terns and the value of quantitative assessment. This interactive panel discussion will examine these questions and more.

The Efficient PracticeElizabeth Woodcock, MBA, FACMPE, CPCPrincipal, Woodcock & AssociatesAtlanta, GAIf chaos rules the day during office hours, this session will help you get back on track to efficiency. As reimbursement declines and costs escalate, there’s no better time than today to focus your efforts on your practice operations. This session features best practices on improving patient flow and prac-tice efficiency to create value for the patient, mission critical in today’s value-based reimbursement environment. From preparing for the visit to wisely managing providers’ time, this session will reveal the key strategies to running an efficient and effective medical practice.

Breakout Sessions

Denial Management: Strategies to Improve Cash FlowElizabeth Woodcock, MBA, FACMPE, CPCPrincipal, Woodcock & AssociatesAtlanta, GAThink your medical practice has a healthy revenue cycle? If you haven’t focused – really focused

– on insurance denials, then think again. Denials might be the most underestimated and poorly understood sources of signifi-cant cash leakage from your practice’s revenue cycle. National speaker and practice management expert Elizabeth Woodcock shows you how to dig into the causes of claim denials in your practice and drastically reduce lost revenue. She’ll show you how to:

• Assess denial patterns and discover their root causes; • Quantify the financial impact of denials; • Utilize more streamlined processes to correct and resub-

mit denials; • File effective appeals of denials and underpayments; • Develop strategies to prevent denials and improve staff

productivity. Tracking, analyzing, resolving and eliminating causes of deni-als is much more than good housekeeping – it might just be the difference between financial stability and failure for your practice.

Reimbursement Reality 2016: The Challenges and OpportunitiesElizabeth Woodcock, MBA, FACMPE, CPCPrincipal, Woodcock & AssociatesAtlanta, GAIn this session, industry expert Elizabeth Woodcock translates legislative and regulatory changes to medical practice opera-tional imperatives. Attend this session to learn how to:

• Leverage 2016’s key changes -- what’s next for Medicare re-imbursement, its impact on specialties and CPT® changes that could affect you;

• Handle the Affordable Care Act – determine what pro-grams are being extended – and how the ACA is impact-ing price transparency;

• Successfully participate in the government’s incentive pay-ment programs, including Value-based Payment Modifier and Meaningful Use.

Is Your Practice Ready for Value Based MedicinePamela Ballou-Nelson, RN, MSHP, PhD, PCMH CCESenior Consultant, MGMA Health Care Consulting GroupEnglewood, COValue-based contracting models will require new practice models that represent an evolution in

clinical and payment methodologies. These new models will create quality and cost outcomes, foster greater accountabil-ity and take advantage of innovations in medical technology. Preparing your practice requires seeing your practice, and your patient, through a new lens. The objectives for this session include:

• Examine your theoretical framework: view your practice through a new lens;

• Ask what am I doing with my population: population health management is here to stay;

• Understand the CMS terms of payment reform; • Discuss the key components of value based practice models.

Help Me UnderstandMonica Wofford, CSPContagious CompaniesOrlando, FLWhether in a simple employee misunderstanding or one that results in legal action, helping others to understand each other is a daily effort in the HR role. Human Resource Profession-als spend an inordinate amount

of time in mediation, doing the best they can to get others to get each other and get their own message across. Help Me Understand makes that role easier by teaching key principles that can be used and shared. No more waiting and hoping that one day that difficult employee or intolerant boss or doctor or even challenging co-worker, will one day wake up and “get it”! In this powerful session, participants will “get THEM” and everyone else, by learning:

• How to go beyond personalities and interpret traits, behaviors and actions that reveal what people really need to hear;

• Methods for making meaningful connections, even with those very different from themselves;

• 10 simple strategies for effectively getting along with anyone;

• 3 strategies for sharing this information with their work-force.

A Guide to Effective and Legal Performance AppraisalsJonathan Sumrell, Esquire, AssociateHancock, Daniel, Johnson & Nagle Glen Allen, VARegular and candid employee evaluations are an excellent opportunity to reestablish ex-

pectations and address performance issues before they become unmanageable. However, poorly planned and executed perfor-mance appraisals can lead to a host of issues. In this session, we will discuss how to conduct strategies for effective performance appraisals while avoiding various legal pitfalls.

Guerilla Medical Practice Marketing: Social Media 2016 Nancy Rose SenichNancy Rose & Associates – Medical Marketing and PRMcLean, VAFor better or for worse, the complex and continuously growing cyber-world of social media has become an es-

Bring your ques-tions to this fun and interactive session!

Breakout Sessions

The Power of BrandCulture for Your Practice Holly Van Auken, Sr. Account Manager, Healthcare DivisionMarketing WorksChesapeake, VADoes healthcare brand building consist solely of impressions made through advertisements, marketing brochures or a website? Or

does it begin when a doctor enters an exam room? Neither—not by a longshot. Your brand is shaped by every interaction with any person, place or thing associated with your organization. And it begins with internal culture—the strongest influence on your team’s behavior. This session demonstrates how you can learn BIG lessons from high-performing organizations like Disney, Zappos, The Ritz-Carlton and Chick-fil-A about unifying brand (expectations and experiences influencing choice) and culture (associate beliefs and behaviors shaping both internal and customer-facing interactions). The end result? Recruiting and retaining the right associates AND recruiting and retaining the right patients.

Learning Objectives:

Attendees will be equipped with the knowledge to:

• Learn how to apply best practices from leaders in retail and hospitality to healthcare;

• Understand the make-or-break impact of internal culture on customer experience, brand perception, customer loyalty and profitability;

• Develop a clearly differentiated BrandCulture in a health-care organization;

• Apply more effective approaches to recruiting, training and retaining an exceptional team;

• Implement customer service practices that attract more of the right patients.
