THE HEAD HAS HIS SAY... by Andrew Edwards

NEWS FROM NURSERY AND PRE-PREP

In my first assembly as Head of TPS, I used Usain Bolt and his story to illustrate the importance of four words which I believe sum up the essentials of an outstanding education: challenge, effort, respect and smile. We looked at

how Usain Bolt has always challenged himself to be the best that he can be, aiming high and always striving to improve. Then we looked back at his unsuccessful debut in the Olympic Games of Athens and how he had to put 100% effort into improving his technique, strength and flexibility. Then we remembered how respectful he was after being beaten by Justin Gatlin in the recent World Championships. Whilst some of the crowd were booing, Bolt said to Gatlin ‘Congratulations, you deserve it’. Finally, we remembered how Bolt’s sense of fun has lit up athletics arenas for a decade and we smiled as we watched him dancing to the Proclaimers just before a race during the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. If our boys and girls challenge themselves to be the best they can be, if they try their best and if they are respectful, I will always be extremely proud of them. We will also end up smiling a lot along the way!

REMINDERS• We continue to be very grateful to parents who are sticking to the three collection times at the end of the day – 4.00, 5.15 or 5.45. In return for this goodwill and support, we do of course understand if circumstances sometimes mean that parents have to pick up in between these times. If you need to pick up regularly at an ‘in between time’, please let your child’s Form Tutor know.

• The full Enrichment programme for Years 3 to 6 got off to a superb start last Saturday. If your child is attending and has a friend who does not attend TPS, but who would like to come along on Saturday mornings, he or she will be very welcome. The charge for non-TPS children is £100 per term and parents just need to contact Miss Page on [email protected]

Photo mania this week and I do hope you like them! However, if you do not wish to order just return the pack as there is

no pressure at all to purchase!

Nursery One and Two are having their usual action packed shots soon taken by Emily Fairweather just in time for Christmas! So do not worry, we have not forgotten you.

Reception have gone on their outing to a working farm today, their first outing as a group! Look out for a write up and photos next week.

On 27th September at 6pm we have the PTA AGM and as we can't be in two places at once the Pre-Prep Assessment evening will be postponed.

PUPILS CONQUER THE SOLENTContinued from front page:

Each swimmer had a safety kayaker assigned with Maisie Raven being escorted by Science Master and father, the indomitable Mr Raven. Flo Salter-Green and Hetty James, fellow Senior School pupils and mentors

to some of the younger swimmers in the Croatia Swimtrek, found this their toughest test yet wading ashore through the ebbing tide. Parents were supportive throughout and able to watch the event from a small cruising craft. Some like Mrs Halliday returning to watch Emily swim the same crossing as her brother Ollie had two years previously.

The conditions were quite challenging, not only was there the necessity to avoid large container ships, something that Josh Green joked about, it was both chilly and choppy throughout. However, showing great fortitude the team ploughed through the water putting all their hard training

throughout the previous year into practice. All the team’s swimmers were across in 100 minutes with the steadfast Geography teacher Mrs Coomber bringing up the rear and landing on the sandbanks of Ryde. The record for the crossing was broken by 12 minutes with Ollie Heard finishing in a ridiculously fast time of 53 mins, shortly followed by Macey Barrett in 61mins, 4 minutes faster than the previous fastest female. Macey said that she had achieved a lot and it has made her challenge herself more than ever before. Impressed Aspire Solent swim Coordinator Andrew Ogierman said: "I normally tell inquisitive adult swimmers the record was just over an hour, now I’m going to have to tell them the record is 53 mins and it was set by a 12-year-old." The whole team are immensely proud of themselves having completed a recognised crossing and rising to the challenge as a team. Proud parents, Mr & Mrs Coleman, thanking the School staff said: "TSLDSC has been brilliant for Darcie in so many ways… what wonderful things our 12-year-old daughter has achieved and she wouldn’t have done it without the support of the teachers that gave up their time to nurture and inspire them this summer".

TPS Headmaster Andrew Edwards commented: "I do not know of any other school in the world which gives 12-year-old pupils the opportunity to challenge themselves and succeed in this way. They are inspired and nurtured by a terrific team of staff and

these are events which will never ever be forgotten by these amazing boys and girls and their families. We are very proud of them all!"

Most don’t yet know the magnitude of their accomplishment or the impact their benevolence will have, having raised more than £8500 for the charity. Proud Swim Coach and Pastoral Head of Years 7&8 Hamish McCarthy said in measuring their courage and resilience "Normal Children don't wake up in the morning, jump in the Solent and swim for 3 miles in September, extraordinary special children can, Taunton Preparatory School children do." The Battle of Salamis 480 B.C.By Marni, Sophia, Joe, James, Aryan and Freddie

Forward, sons of the Greeks, liberate the fatherland, liberate your children, your women, the temples of your ancestral gods, the graves of your forebears: This is the battle for everything".

Aeschylus (eye witness to the battle)

By 480B.C. the Persian Empire, under the command of their King, Xerxes, had invaded almost half of the Greek Empire.

The Greeks had been defeated at the Battles of Artemesium and Thermopylae and things were not looking good.

However, the Greek navy had escaped and were waiting at the island of Salamis, near Phaleron, the port of Athens. The navy was led by the Athenian admiral Themistocles, who had a plan to lure the Persian navy into the narrow straits of Salamis, before attacking them. The battle took place in the Saronic Gulf, near modern day Athens.

The Greek fleet was heavily outnumbered, having 371 galleys, compared to 1207 Persian ships! The Greek force was a combined effort from all the city states, including Sparta, Athens and Hermione.

The attack began when a Greek ship rammed the leading Persian ship and then the fighting began in earnest. The Greek ships either rammed or boarded the Persian ships and by nightfall almost one third of the Persian ships had been destroyed. The Persians found it difficult to manoeuvre in the cramped conditions and were sitting ducks.

The historian Herodotus noted that few Greeks were killed as they were good swimmers whereas almost all the Persian sailors who died, drowned.

Amongst those Persians killed, was Xerxes’s nephew.

The Battle of Salamis was historically important as the Persian defeat meant that Xerxes had to delay his planned invasion of the Greek mainland and this gave the Greeks time to gather their forces and prepare for battle.

It is also the first recorded naval battle in history!

Adventure, challenges and fun! Last weekend, whilst camping

at the 1610 base close to Hestercombe House, the students from The Grange (Taunton School International Middle School) enjoyed a weekend full of adventure, challenges and fun. Eagerly, the students headed up to the house, met the staff and took part in some warm up activities.

The students were divided into four groups and chose their own names: “The Eagles”, “The Marshmallows Bears”, “The Hurricanes” and “The Survivors”. The teams were then ready to compete against each other for points and prizes.

The students headed for the campsite set in the middle of the woods, pitched their tents and prepared themselves for the team building

activities ahead. All the students took part in a communicative exercise using a standard deck of cards; a team building task using various pieces of

wood and rope; a challenging puzzle in which they had to work together to fill up a funnel to raise a ball by first solving the issue of transporting the water and, finally, they embarked on a search to find words hidden in the woods.

As the challenges were completed, the students sat around

the camp fire under the stars, watching the daylight slowly fade away whilst they were told a ghost story by Andrew the group leader of 1610. The story

highlighted the dark history of Hestercombe House. Students and staff were then treated to a ghost walk through the dark woods towards the haunted, creepy and terrifying Hestercombe House.

After a very early wake up, the pupils enjoyed completing an obstacle course, rock climbing and paintball target shooting. The teams worked

tirelessly through the activities. Over the weekend they made many new international friends whilst developing a wealth of team building skills. Congratulations to the Survivors, who just made it into first place.

NEW OPPORTUNITIES AT THE BREWHOUSE THEATRETaunton School and The

Brewhouse Theatre have teamed up in a newly arranged sponsorship deal.

Chief Executive of The Brewhouse, Vanessa LeFrancois, said: “We are delighted to welcome Taunton School as a new sponsor of The Brewhouse Theatre. We look forward to working together to create many more opportunities for young people to experience the arts as audience, participants and creators. Together we are committed to ensure every child in Taunton is a theatre goer and will continue to invest in the holistic education of young people.”

The sponsorship is in place for an initial three years although both parties envision that it is the beginning of a longstanding relationship.

Headmaster Lee Glaser said: “I am delighted that we have formalised our partnership with The Brewhouse - such a fabulous facility in the heart of Taunton and so much more than just a theatre. There is much synergy between Taunton School and The Brewhouse and our association goes back many years. We are looking forward to the array of wonderful opportunities for collaboration and mutual support over the coming months and years.

It's another exciting community partnership for us.”

BOARDERS SETTLE IN TO THE NEW YEARThe Wacky Water Contest and

trip to Exmoor Zoo gave the children of Thone House the opportunity to down tools and divert their focus, having completed their first full week back at school. The rigours of school routine, as opposed to relaxed holiday mode are now reality, but it has been wonderful to see how the House has embraced the transition. Merrily moving from the day to day opportunities experienced

at school, Thone House has enjoyed an array of evening activities. Making pizza toasties during their cookery activity,

having fun testing their swimming rescue abilities in the Keeling pool, trying out new musical instruments during music and making time to enjoy tuck and a film on the big screen. Added to this, it has been special to welcome a number of visitors into Thone, as a number of day pupils have opted to stay throughout the week.

With Exeat upon us this weekend, there will be time to reflect on the start of the academic year and to plan for the forthcoming trips. THIS WEEK'S SPORTU9 RUGBY

MILLFIELD U10 FESTIVAL, SATURDAY 16TH SEPTU13 Rugby

The Under 9s have had a busy first couple of weeks as they try to get to grips with contact rugby for the first time. A rugby festival at St Peter's last week saw them play against Blundell's, Queen's, and Exeter Cathedral School. Although the scores were not counted the team played very well with everyone making tackles and running hard with the ball. On Thursday we welcomed King's Hall to Taunton. This was a much tougher test as they had some very strong individual boys. However the TPS pupils again played some excellent rugby in both of the games. They can all feel proud with how much they have already achieved in this short time and the progress they have made in this contact version of the game.

Shaun WinsorSquad: Cornelius Workman, Charlie Vile, Theo Howard, Rufus Holden, Heryck Gallimore, Thomas Dutton, William Cooper, Theo Winsor, Reuben Thomas, Zachary Roberts, Harrison Perrone, Atul Gudsoorkar, Xavier Flay, Louis Thompson, Thomas Ford

Congratulations to the U13A rugby team who played three games in a mini festival on Saturday, winning one and drawing two. What is most impressive is one of these teams they lost to by 50 points last year! It just shows how much they have improved as a team. On Wednesday the 13As played Hazlegrove. Despite going three tries down in the first half the team fought back to level the scores at 15-15 with only two minutes to go. A lost scrum in their own 22 then saw Hazlegrove score to win the match. A thrilling game to watch although not the results the TPS parents on the side-line were cheering for.

Shaun Winsor

The U10As took part in a rugby festival at Millfield this Saturday and produced an outstanding display of teamwork, skill and commitment. Six matches were played in the afternoon, with Taunton coming out on top in five of them.

The first match was a closely fought one against Clifton College. A huge defensive effort was needed to repel them, with the odd bit of brilliance moving the ball to create enough space to score. Taunton eventually coming out on top at the end. By the second match the boys were clearly well warmed up and ran in a number of tries, with excellent movement of the ball across the whole team, against Port Regis without conceding. The third match was a similar affair, again showing a very good attacking display by using great width and depth to create a number of try scoring opportunities that were taken well against a defensively good All Hallows side. Blundell’s was our fourth match of the day, in a rematch of Wednesday's fixture.

Unfortunately they were slightly too strong for us, as their size and physicality won the day. In the penultimate match of the day, we again came out on top against a good Port Regis side (including two of our own players, due to injuries). A hard fought match, with both teams putting in some big tackles at key moments. Finally we came up against Millfield, by far our best performance of the day was produced, even though the boys had already played 50 minutes of rugby. The contest was extremely close until the last couple of minutes, when we managed to get two tries in quick succession.

A big congratulations to all the boys who took part.

U13As Tennis vs Heathfield U13As – Friday 15th September

U13a third place at Blundell’s TournamentSATURDAY, 16TH SEPTEMBER

Throughout the Summer term the under 13As participated in a county wide tennis division. Having won all their matches throughout the term, they qualified top of their group and secured a place in the county play off finals, with the winners getting the chance to qualify for the regional finals held later this month.

Although now most of the team has moved up to the Senior School, we still had Findlay Robertson representing the Prep School alongside Adam Lewis-Williams, Rowan Keyte and Teddy Woolstencroft. They were up against a good Heathfield side, who also qualified top of their group. The singles ended up two matches apiece, meaning it was

very well poised going into the final round of doubles. Our boys took control at this point and secured both doubles rubbers, winning the match 4-2 overall.

A big congratulations to all the boys on their efforts in reaching the regional finals later this month.

This was a very promising start to our season with many more goals scored than conceded. Our first match was against Danes Hill. It was a good match with a fast pace of

play. It was goal for goal all the way through but ended 3-2 to Danes Hill. We then faced St Peters, where we continued playing fast hockey and won 3-0. Against

Blundell’s B team we had a fantastic game winning 8-0. We allowed the pace of our game to slow down against Exeter, but still managed to win 2-0. We then faced Blundell’s A team who we knew would be strong. It was an end to end match with both teams scoring well. Blundell’s won a short corner on the full time whistle, which they converted into a goal, resulting in a win for them 3-2. Our final match against Maynards was 6-0 to Taunton. Overall we came 3rd, but played some great hockey all morning. A very exciting start.

A successful tournament with only one loss, two wins and three draws. It was a good learning curve for the girls that the need to score in a tournament is very important, draws can work against you in the overall standings. We came away with bronze medals but played very well and could have finished higher!

U13b Team Hazlegrove Tournament

The Under 13C team went to Hazelgrove for a Tournament on Saturday. They played 4 matches and a 5 minute playoff. Kate made some great saves in goal, whilst Daisy, Ashie and Grace were strong in defence. Marnie scored a super goal against Sherborne, with Charlotte and Zoe also attacking well.

The Year 4 girls started their season well against King’s Hall. All the girls played and showed good promise for the term.

U9 V KINGS HALL

Wednesday saw a visit from Tatworth Primary School where it gave all the girls another opportunity to represent the U10s.

Tatworth won the toss and chose first push back. They dominated the first half, though Taunton defence put up a good show in the first quarter. It was evident that the

Tatworth girls were showing real grit and determination on the ball and despite an excellent goal by Millie T the first half ended on a score of 2-1 to Tatworth.

After a bit of a pep talk from Mrs Seymour and Mrs Page on showing some aggression and hunger for the ball, the girls really picked up in the

second half, only conceding one goal and scoring two goals. Well done Millie T again and Emily V on super goals.

The final score was 3-3, another draw for the U10s.

Well done to Millie T on two fantastic goals and to Leila who was voted player of the match.

Played: 5

Won: 5

Tries scored: 26

Tries conceded: 1The Year 6 rugby team travelled

down to West Buckland on Saturday 16th September in good spirits after two good performances earlier in the week. First game was against a strong Queen's side who had beaten Taunton the previous year. However, with new found belief and confidence in their defence the Taunton boys were confident of a win. A strong defensive work rate (which was the main theme of the day) ensured Taunton won this match 15-0, a very promising start.

Next up, were one of the Colston’s teams. A strong start saw Taunton race in to an early lead through Kian, who scored two really well taken tries, in only his second experience of competitive rugby. A strong defence

ensured Colton’s didn’t score and the boys were 2 from 2.

Up next, were a tough West Buckland side who were the only team all day to score past this strong Taunton defence. However the boys defence was once again strong and despite a small lapse in concentration once, the game was won a comfortable victory was recorded. Well done to Brogan for scoring 3 tries in this game, each one was well deserved.

Our penultimate game was against Colston’s other side. They were listed as Colston’s A; however, the result proved to be much more one sided as Taunton won by 40 points to nil. Taunton showed how devastating they can be with ball in hand when everyone hits the ball at pace and from depth. This attacking play combined with good line speed and strong defence is impossible to play against.

Taunton’s final game was against

Wellington Prep. The boys went in to this game knowing victory would see them crowned champions and played like winners. Everything was done at high intensity, carrying, rucking, tackling, and some great offloading meant Taunton were impossible to keep out. Another one sided result ensued and another game where we stopped the opposition scoring.

Taunton put on a real masterclass today, ending the day with 5 wins from 5 games, scoring 26 tries and only conceding 1, a testament to how hard all of the squad worked in defence. The most pleasing aspect of the day was the togetherness the team showed; no bickering or arguing and all 13 boys showed their opponents and the officials the utmost respect throughout each game.

Well done boys, a fantastic achievement.
