“Hi! How are you?” “I’m good. How are you?” “Oh. We have been just crazy busy!”

As Americans we believe that the “busier” we are, the more “blessed” we are in this life. All of us have admitted from time to

time that we are “SO” busy. But what are we really, so busy about? Well, according to the most recent statistical studies, we are very busy with the things of this world. For example, the “American Time Use Survey Summary”, that was just released this past June 19, 2019, revealed that we are not lying when it comes to our claim that we are in fact, “SO VERY BUSY.” For the average working man in this country worked during the week 8.2 hours while women worked 7.9 hours. Well, right there, that is 30% of your day gone, in order to bring home the bacon. By the time that you made it home, the average woman spent 2.6 hours doing household work, while the average man spent about 2 hours each day doing household chores. Well, there goes another 8% of your day just doing things around the house. When it comes to leisure, men spent on average nearly 6 hours doing “fun stuff”, while the average woman spent on average about 5 hours in leisure time each day. (*By the way, half of that leisure time was spent watching television.) So, give or take, about another 20% of the day is for just having some down time. If you add in another 6-8 hours of sleep, that again is at least another 25% of your day. We have almost used up the entire day just through work, sleep and recreation. Yet, with that little remaining time, some 20-22%, people amazingly rebuild boats and homes, learn a musical instrument, paint great paintings, and a whole host of creative and inventive things in their garage, basement or workshop. Sadly however, the spiritually creative work of worship is not part and parcel of this present generation. For some of these same new statistics reveal some very sad realities of how we spend our time when it comes to religion. For only 22% of Americans, regardless of their denomination, attend services weekly. Some 80% of Americans today are either sleeping in, having a late breakfast, or reading the Sunday paper on any given

“For the children of this world are more prudent in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light.” - St. Luke

Sunday morning. Today’s Gospel parable from St. Luke’s account is a strange one as the villain of the story almost comes across as virtuous. Specifically, a steward who has squandered his master’s money and is discovered, cleverly decides to ensure a bright future for himself by reducing the debts of those owing his master money. Amazingly, he has created a very clever, financial WIN-WIN situation. The debtors are getting a winning deal by a reduced amount, and the master is receiving a winning deal by collecting monies that he might have not recovered any time in the near future, if at all. So, the passage ends with the master, giving the corrupt steward kudos with coming up with such a clever plan with regards to cash and cash flow. I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT IN ORDER TO BE CATHOLIC AND CHRISTIAN, WE HAVE TO BE CLEVER TO GET TO THE CELESTIAL HEIGHTS. In the Sacred Scriptures, the mark of sincere holiness seems to be rooted in being clever. Recall, in the New Testament, the Acts of the Apostles, St. Paul finds himself in the Greek city of Athens. In this town of some 10,000 people it is filled with shrines and temples to the ancient pagan gods. For St. Paul to see this was nothing less of being repulsive. Yet, then St. Paul sees a Greek shrine to the “Unknown God”. With great theological cleverness, he says, “I know who your unknown God is, for it is Jesus Christ!” As a result, many of the Greeks came to believe in the Son of God. On multiple occasions the Lord has been able to get Himself out of particularly complex theological pickles by putting that sharp mind of His to use. Perhaps the best example that comes to my mind is when they bring to Jesus the woman caught in the act of adultery. The law of Moses said to stone her. Jesus knew it was theologically dangerous to contradict the great Moses who wrote down the Ten Commandments. Yet, the Messiah also did not want to go against His message of mercy. How clever when Christ says to those men: “Let he who is without sin be the first to cast a stone at her.” The situation was resolved in a very clever theological way. We are a time in the Church and a time in Christianity where the culture is presenting some challenging issues to us, from people not sitting in the pews on Sunday, to a broad spectrum of sexual behaviors that society is approving, to stewardship slipping and spiritual houses of worship seeing their doors closed. *(In the most recent issue of the Diocese of New Ulm paper, “The Prairie Catholic”, it was reported that four more of our Catholic Churches closed including: Green Valley, Clements, Morton and Beardsley.) We need holy leadership to see us through these spiritually slippery times. We need clergy and laity

to be as clever on the weekends with our worship as we are on the weekdays when it comes to our workplace. As a Christian and as a Roman Catholic, strive this week to be clever not only in the workplace, but also in that place of prayer that we are called into to worship weekly. Have a great week. See you in church next week! Rev. Paul van de Crommert Pastor

Stewardship Of Gratitude

Several weeks ago we received word from the Diocese of New Ulm that Holy Rosary was “randomly” chosen this year to have a financial audit of our parish books of the past Fiscal Year of 2018-2019. The weight of this audit fell on our Parish Administrator, Jim Theuninck. Many documents needed to be sent in advance to the auditing firm as well as sizable questionnaires had to be filled out with a bit of help of this pastor. Last week the auditors arrived and spent a couple of hours reviewing the books and asking some remaining questions. While the final report will not come out until December of 2019, those reviewing our records commended our administrator at the good work that is being done in terms of accounting for the parish’s stewardship. I mention this, because within the Catholic Church we hear today so much of crisis and financial scandals. In fact, I just read in the latest edition of the Archdiocesan weekly paper from St. Paul and Minneapolis of a former parish administrator at the Church of St. Francis Xavier in Buffalo, MN who has been recently charged with stealing $100,000.00 of parish funds. In my 30 years as pastor I have always told my councils that I try to treat the parish monies like my own. We have been blessed with very sound stewardship week in and week out for the past five years. This past weekend is again no exception as we are well above budget. Just as you are called to be good stewards by what you place in the basket each week or contribute through electronic giving; so too, we in administration are equally called to be good stewards when those offerings are taken out of the basket after the liturgies. As always, thank you for your gifts! -Father

WOW! What a Wonderful

Sunday Mass in Wheeler

Park! I arrived home on Friday afternoon but quickly learned that our area had been suffering much of the week from rain and storms. My secretary texted me the Good News on my way home that the forecast for our 15th Annual Outdoor Mass was to be in the low 80’s and sunny! That sounds almost perfect for southern Minnesota. On Saturday night I was not only praying for no rain and lots of sunshine, but also for no wind. Just before I went to bed on Saturday night, the forecast was also for “calm” winds. What a beautiful Sunday morning that was given to us by Mother Nature and the Almighty! Although we had to reposition the location of the seating for Mass, it seemed to work out quite well. We believe that between 500-600 people were in attendance at the Mass and served almost 500 people for the picnic that followed. By all accounts our attendance was up again this year from a year ago. A special word of thanks to all that once again made the day possible. First and foremost to Jim Theuninck and the committee for organizing this important day in the life of the parish. Also a special thanks to the Knights of Columbus for all of their help in both setting up and taking things down for this annual event. What sets our parish apart from so many other churches is the wonderful music that is provided. Thank you to all of our musicians who added so much to this outdoor liturgy. We are equally grateful to all who donated for the cause both financially as well as through the many fine deserts that we enjoyed. Certainly all the faithful that made the sacrifice to come was critical for this great celebration. Most of all we are grateful to God for the beautiful day and for the faith that calls us together to practice our religion and to believe in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ! Thank you everyone who made the day so very special and successful!!!

September 25th, at 6:00 P.M. in the Holy Rosary School building. Registrations were mailed out to all registered households of Holy Rosary at the close of August. Many have registered, but there are numerous families that have not registered. In order for your son or daughter to participate in religious education, they must be registered. You may register on-line, stop by the Parish Office, drop your registration in the weekend collection or drop it in the mail. It is important that your son or daughter gets a great start in their study of God. The first classes are so important. Please take a moment to register today.

Loyola Catholic School Assessment: Pd. to Date: $90,000.00 Due: $179,571.97

Total Paid to Date 2019-20: $93,656.03 Apostolate Stewardship 2019-20: $296,847.65

As you may notice above, this week we contributed another $11,000.00 towards our stewardship commitment to our area Loyola Catholic School. This brings us to a “cool”$80,0000.00 that has already been given in this present fiscal year. When compared to last year at this time, the parish had contributed $36,000.00 at that time. Our ability to be $44,000.00 ahead of last year at this time is certainly worth noting. On the other hand, while we have contributed a little bit less than $3,000.00 to the Diocese of New Ulm so far this year, last year at this time we had contributed nearly $15,000.00. So on that end of stewardship we are behind by some $12,000.00. So, when you subtract $12,000.00 from $44,000.00, we are still ahead of the stewardship curve by $32,000.00! My pastoral hope is to continue to move forward in both areas and to possibly have the majority of these stewardship commitments completed by the close of the calendar year of 2019. Hope springs eternal. If we are able to complete these stewardship commitments in a timely fashion, we will be able to continue to do the repairs and updates on our church facility both upstairs and downstairs. As you are all aware, the front entrance of the church will be soon under construction. In addition, we have been informed by the State of Minnesota that the present church kitchen in the lower church hall (specifically the range, ovens and vents) may NO LONGER BE USED AFTER JULY 1ST OF 2020. This is both a challenge and an opportunity as to how we want to make use of our kitchen facility. We will be under discussion with the Finance and

Confirmation Parent and Student

Meeting this Sunday – Sept. 22nd! A recent letter was sent this past August announcing the start of our Confirmation program this fall. We will be gathering after the 10:00 A.M. Mass for lunch followed by a brief presentation in the upper church Both parents as well as their sons and daughter in the 9th and 10th grades are required to attend. Parents and students are asked to bring their calendars to find two agreeable times each month to meet on Sunday afternoons after the morning Mass. We are anticipating about 12 classes prior to the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation on Saturday, April 18th at Holy Rosary with Bishop John LeVoir of the Diocese of New Ulm.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word

Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLW) begins soon! Dismissal of children grades 1, 2, and 3 will begin on Sunday, September 29th at the 10:00 A.M. Mass . CLW takes place during the homily. It is a time of prayer, reflection on the scripture for that Sunday, names the children’s intentions and profession of the creed. The children return to their parents at offertory time. This is for children from Loyola and Holy Rosary’s Religious Education program.

Pastoral Councils as how to best proceed. There have been already some preliminary discussions with the Finance Council on this matter. For in addition to the issues in the parish kitchen, we are dealing with an ongoing moisture problem in the social hall. We are assessing as to how to best address this concern. The bathrooms in the church have not been updated since their construction in 1950. This area also needs to be discussed. In addition to all of this, we also need to address numerous areas in the church proper. We are presently planning to address some electrical concerns and improvements yet this fall that will run nearly $10,000.00. Some of the areas are not up to code, as for example we turn on an off the church lights not through a legal switch, but through flipping breakers. Apparently, this is frowned upon by those working in the electrical area. And so it goes! I will keep you posted as the projects develop and the stewardship comes into the Sunday collections. We will do as much as our stewardship allows. Thank you for your gifts!

TWENTY FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 22, 2019

Stepping Up in Faith Collected this week: $200.00 Received to date: $83,117.22 Goal: $175,000.00 As we are preparing the bulletin on Tuesday morning, we are anticipating that any day the work will begin on our front entrance. Specifically, we are anticipating that the demolition will begin and the ground will be broken. This week we finalized the selection of brick that will go on the planters on either side of the steps. The bricks are remarkably close to the original brick but it is tricky to be exact as even bricks are faded by the sun after some 70 years. I hope by next week we will start seeing some progress on the front entrance as already in the month of October we have seen our first snowflakes. The firm has given us their assurance that it will all be completed before we celebrate the holidays. I certainly hope so! Your continued support for this project is still welcome. Thank you to all of you that have been so generous up to this point. Thanks!

Endowment Fund Update

Over the past few years we have been working on our Holy Rosary Endowment Fund. Like many other Catholic parishes and institutions across the country that have established such formal legal funds, they are designed to insure a sound and secure stewardship future for parishes and institutions. The money or the principal that is placed in this designated fund is never to be spent and when formally set up through an attorney such as we have done here at Holy Rosary, it would be both illegal and criminal to “ever” remove principal monies either by this pastor or his successors. Prior to my arrival as pastor, monies were given by a specific family with the hope that these monies would be preserved while only taking off if needed the dividends or the interest. At the time, this had not been honored. In the past years we have been taking money from the general fund along with the various monies that have been donated to build up this Endowment Fund. Last year at this time we had reached the amount of $156,748.32. Just one year later, the fund has grown with additional monies and neither interest nor dividends removed to now $224,580.57. In just the past 12 months this account has increased by nearly $70,000.00. Recently, Holy Rosary Parish received a single gift of $10,000.00 from one of our generous benefactors. We also are receiving monies frequently from parishioners on a weekly basis as well as at the time of funerals or included in final planning. Are you planning or updating your estate plans? Have you received as recent windfall? Do you want to insure that your stewardship will live on after you are not longer among the living? Perhaps you might consider a gift to our Holy Rosary Endowment Fund to insure that the Catholic Faith will remain strong and vibrant at Holy Rosary for many more generations to come! Thank you for your stewardship support!
