Presents

Theatre on San Pedro Square29 N. San Pedro Sreet • Downtown San Jose

September 21 – October 14, 2012

Welcome / Director’s Note from Cathy Spielberger Cassetta, Executive Director

Theatre is more than a show. Tabard.

Welcome to our 12th Season!!!! This year we are celebrating the impact that certain people—Elvis Presley, Francis Biddle, Big Band leaders, song writers, arrangers, orchestras, Tony Bennett, Alonzo Fields, Mickey

Rooney and Judy Garland—have had on our lives through our theme of TRUE Lives: Stories & Songs of Real People. I’m sure you’ve heard of all of them except maybe Francis Biddle and Alonzo Fields—reason enough for you to join us as we take a glimpse into these two lives and experience their profound stories through Trying and Looking Over the President’s Shoulder, respectively. Closer to home, we are dedicating this season to three men who provided the true foundation and encouragement to their daughters to pursue their creative passions and talents. Without them, we truly would not be the women of theatre we are today:• Fred Spielberger—my father and Chris’ father-in-law, who passed away May 16th. Fred was Tabard’s first donor, who also donated the use of his garage for Tabard storage for 11 years, known to us as Fred’s Fine Storage. • Tom Higgins—father and father-in-law to our resident lighting designers Danny Jennifer Higgins Dunn and Beric Dunn, who passed away May 26th. • Bob Turner—father of Diana Turner, Tabard resident stage manager, who passed away June 26th. Without Fred, Tom and Bob, Tabard would not exist. Truly. So hats off to these fine fellows. We miss them more than words can express. Another loss in the Tabard family this summer was John Palmer’s brother, Gary. Two of our favorite actors also suffered the recent loss of a parent. We also lost Tabard’s first subscriber, Chiq Lockhart, a strong Tabard advocate and donor since 2001; and Joan Dahl, a relatively new subscriber. So this year, as we celebrate TRUE Lives: Stories and Songs of Real People, we celebrate and remember those who are no longer with us but who made a tremendous and lasting impact on us, making our lives far richer for having had them with us. The nonprofit for this show is Arts Angels, a program developed by Tabard and Nineteen Jazz Ensemble to provide arts mentors in local schools. Read more about Arts Angels later in this program. For now, put on your blue suede shoes and get ready to rock-and-roll with Elvis Has Left the Building.

To say Elvis is a “personality” might just be the understatement of the century. Although, obviously a real person, even years after his passing, Elvis (and ev-eryone who came into contact with him) somehow still seems larger-than-life.

Impossibly so. His life reads like a movie script. Or, a play, even. The writers and the Tabard creative team took the larger-than-life approach very much to heart when creating what you are about to see. One three-day period in the life of Elvis and his manager, Colonel Parker (also a real life person and personality in his own right), blown up into a giant ball of “what if it happened like this?” And, who’s to say it didn’t happen EXACTLY like this? I mean, why not, right? Truth or fiction, or more likely a bit of both, we hope you enjoy the show as much as we have putting it together and performing it for you.

Joseph O’Loughlin (Colonel Parker) makes his Tabard debut. He has appeared as the Judge in Gogol’s The Government Inspector (BBSC) and the Burglar in Shaw’s Heartbreak House (AE). Besides numerous staged readings of Shakespeare, Beaumont, Marlowe and Johnson plays for Subterranean Shakespeare, he has performed in the chorus for Festival, Livermore, and Opera San José opera companies and has written an award-wimming short play, The Psychic.

Ron Packard (Candy) returns to Tabard after his roles in It’s a Wonderful Life, See How They Run, A Taffeta Wedding and A Taffeta Christmas. He also enjoyed sharing the stage with his wife and three children in SBMT’s production of The Music Man. His favorite roles include Bobby Child in Crazy for You, Elliot Garfield in The Goodbye Girl, and Bud Frump in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (for which he received a Dean Goodman Choice Award).

Will Perez (Roscoe) returns after making his Tabard debut last season in Bandstand Beat. By day he is a Lasik technician in his hometown of San Jose. Favorite roles/shows include Victor (Smokey Joe’s Café), Frankie (Forever Plaid), and The Del Tones (Breaking Up Is Hard to Do), all for BBSC; The Producers (SBMT); Young Joe Hardy (Damn Yankees!, WVLO); and World Goes Round (Pear Avenue Theater). He thanks his family and friends for their support.

She also served as Dance Captain for Bandstand Beat and The Tin Pan Alley Rag. She received her bachelor’s degree in drama from San Francisco State University, where she was a member of the Brown Bag Theatre Company. When not dancing, Sarah loves watching SciFi television.

Her other memorable performances have been as Sara Jane Moore in Assassins (ATC), Mother Burnside in Mame (WVLO), and Miss Jones in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (Pioneer High’s alumni troupe, The Glue Factory). She hopes you will support Tabard’s very worthwhile cause, Arts Angels, and that you Enjoy The Show!!

meet the artists

Virginia Cate & Duke Ernsberger (Playwrights) are a mother/son writing duo whose credits include Losing Patients; Dracula Bites; Don’t Cry for Me, Margaret Mitchell; Sherlock Holmes and the Christmas Goose and, of course, Elvis Has Left the Building. Cate comes up with half the dialogue and the general concepts of their plays, while Ernsberger supplies the rest of the dialogue and—because he is an actor—the stage directions. He has appeared in more than 15 movies and indie films, including King Kong Lives, two of Jim Varney’s Ernest series, and the upcoming Killbilly Farm.

Cathy Spielberger Cassetta (Producer/Props) is a theatre/television veteran and entrepreneur who created/produced/co-hosted the weekly TV program Theatre This Week in the 1990s before founding Tabard in 2001. For Tabard she has directed Scapin, Dames at Sea, The Gifts of the Magi, The Dog Sitters, Sabrina Fair, A Taffeta Wedding, Stompin’ at the Savoy, Bandstand Beat (also created and wrote), It’s a Wonderful Life and Crossing Delancey. TRUE: She was born and raised in Mexico City.

Joe Cassetta (Technical Director) has been significantly involved with Tabard since the beginning, including building a theatre inside Opera San José’s 10,000-square-foot rehearsal hall for Stop Time! and guiding the tech team for all shows. An engineering manager at IBM by day, Joe was acknowledged last year by President Obama and IBM for his volunteer work with Tabard. TRUE: If he hadn’t been an engineer, he would have been an English teacher.

Beric Dunn (Lighting Designer) Having been with Tabard since the first show and at all 8 venues, Beric continues to enjoy the creative opportunities of designing light-ing for Tabard shows. TRUE: Beric was born in Kenya.

Valerie Gordon (Stage Manager) starred at age six in a community theatre produc-tion of One Eye, Two Eyes, Three Eyes. Since then, she’s had experience as performer, director, set and lighting designer. Valerie is proudest of directing How to Succeed in Business. After a long hiatus raising a family and establishing a career, she’s excited to be back working with the great team on Elvis Has Left the Building. TRUE: She lives in a 115-year-old house.

Susannah Greenwood (Director) has directed, acted, taught, written (Pandemo-nium) and even bartended for Tabard. Favorite directing gigs include The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe (Tabard), Bug and Bill of (W)Rights (RTE) and Wrong Turn at Lungfish (NTC).
