Are you interested in joining the Catholic Church? The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, RCIA, is a pro-gram for people interested in exploring and possibly joining the Catholic Church.

Adults wishing to enter the Catholic Church typically receive the sacraments of Baptism (unless baptized in another Christian faith), Confirmation, and the Holy Eucharist at Easter. Our new program has started. Feel free to join in at any time. All are welcome! RCIA meets every Tuesday evening at 7PM in the Siena Room. It is not necessary to sign up. Please contact Sally at 707-731-7933 for more information.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I would like to thank all of you who called, emailed and met with me regarding my comments at the end of Mass last week, especially those who did not agree with me for your respectful and insightful feedback. If everyone agreed with me on everything the world would be a very boring place. Differences of opinion are what add personality and character to our community. However, direct communication based upon the facts allows us to understand each other and strive to be another Christ to one another. Some of you expressed that you are totally in the dark as to what prompted my comments last week. When decisions are made that affect people, or are sensitive in nature, there is a protocol as to who hears the news first. When those that hear of changes first speak before the rest of the parish is privy to the information, especially when they spread misinformation, it is dangerous to our community. As soon as it is appropriate to communicate any decisions or changes to the parish at large, you have my word I will do just that. So, please be patient and I promise you as soon as we can I will give you all the information you need.

During my morning walk the other day, this was the beautiful and peaceful scene I encountered.

Many of you have asked how St. Dominic’s can help the fire victims in Lake and Butte Counties. St. Vincent de Paul coordinates on disaster relief across the country, here is the information for the fire areas being affected: Our Contact at St. Vincent de Paul for the affected area is Philip A. Livescan is here today for onsite fingerprinting! 10am-12pm (Drop in), In the Aquinas Room

All parish volunteers over the age 18 who work with children need to be fingerprinted, regardless of whether they've been fingerprinted elsewhere (even within the diocese or at the school). The parish pays the cost of the fingerprinting for all church volunteers. SDS School Families are invited to get their fingerprints done in order to volunteer in classrooms and attend field trips on this date as well. However, SDS parents will need to cover the $47 rolling fee. Checks may be made out to St. Dominic’s Church or bring Cash. Bring a valid Photo ID.

Livescan for Volunteers

Dear Parishioners,

This weekend I had the opportunity to attend Rite of Candidacy for Deacons. As many of you know, Tony Hensley and Shawn Carter have been discerning the call to become permanent deacons in the Catholic Church. Like a lot of discernments this one requires a significant amount of prayer, years of education, and a whole lot of grace. It is not something that is taken lightly. For the past year, these men and their wives have been attending classes and group discussions, and deepening their knowledge of the Faith. Yet even after a year there was no commitment on either side to continue the necessary steps of formation in order to become deacons—until Saturday. It was at this point that both Tony and Shawn solidified their desire to serve God and His Church. Like all ordained roles in the church, it is foremost a call to serve the people. It takes many more years of formation, but God willing they will be ordained in 2018. Both men and their wives must commit countless weekends and evenings of study and prayer, and they must make regular treks to the seat of our diocese, Sacramento. And they do all this for you and your families. The ceremony of candidacy occurred at Holy Family Church in Citrus Heights (northeast of Sacramento) for both Tony and Shawn, as well as 32 of their classmates—one of the largest classes in history. The bishop called them all forward to accept their formal entrance into the program. Please pray for all of them and their wives. It is not an easy journey, and some may find that the requirements are too demanding. But they will all be an asset to the Church. Sometime in the future they may indeed serve you and your needs.

Please take the time to congratulate them and offer them your prayers and encouragement! Pax Christi, Fr. Corwin

Deaconate Candidates

Dear Parents As we begin the new school year, we should be mindful of the transcendent value religious education brings to our family. But my reminder will not come so much from the authority of the Church as it will come first from the authority of a parent. I'm a husband of 36 years and a father of three grown children, twin daughters and a son. When our twins were 4 years old, their first encounter with death was the loss of their pet rabbit. Unexpectedly however, their immediate question was not so much why the death of their beloved pet, but rather, why death. I look back on that moment as a crisis of faith, where my credibility as a parent and a Christian was on the line. I also felt that whatever words fell out of my mouth in that moment, my daughters would never forget for the rest of their lives. Additionally, I knew my response would not only have to be a statement of faith but also be a response that gave them a bigger story that would leave them knowing that the universe was still a safe place and that death was not the final answer. In so many words, I told them that we are all beloved children of God - that we come from God to live for God and at the end of this earthly life, return to God. And because God loves us so much, our names are already written in heaven. My daughters tell me to this day my response left them knowing the universe was still a safe place and that death was not the final answer. Well, death was the first of many parenting crises of faith where the circumstances and ensuing discussions became much more nuanced and complicated - why sin, why suffering, why love, why betrayal? And with each and every crisis, I believe we overcame each crisis because we held a common worldview and a common language from which too see and speak from. Religious education not only gave us a story, but a language within a story in which to dialogue the mysteries of life together as a family. Religious education keeps the family together because it keeps the faith conversation alive at every stage of our children's spiritual development, because without it, an unbelieving world will fill those gaps of meaning which demand a faith response. While we struggle with the complexity of life, I believe we all want the authority of God in our lives. Our children have that authority. They have the authority to remind us that we are inherently beloved and that we are forever loved and forgiven. Therefore, religious education is important for our sake as it is for theirs! Being a parent is the greatest privilege we will have in this life and we are blessed to have the Church guide us in our vocation as parents. God bless you, your children and all those at St. Dominic's entrusted with the care your children's religious education. Yours in Christ, Deacon Errol Kissinger
