As little kids, we loved color and it didn’t change as I got older! I drew all the time- mostly female figures. In college, I received a degree in Bacteriology from the University of Chicago, and whenever I could, went to the Art Institute for a minor in Art. Later I continued studying Art at USC.

I believe that everybody can follow art in their own way if we set our minds to it; we don’t know what kinds of talent we really have!

It is a pleasure to issue our popular annual calendar showcasing the expressive artistic skills of our wonderful residents. Each year the new works selected are created by many individuals, some with little to no art background. Undeterred by physical and cognitive challenges, their vibrant art inspires all of the residents, their families, guests, visitors and the dedicated Reutlinger staff. We are happy to share their unique emotional expression though art with our community and supporters. In addition, our resident artists have enriched the campus common areas and hallways with beautifully framed original pictures. We also proudly participate in the prestigious public exhibition by San Francisco’s Art With Elders program. As you can see, art plays an important role in uplifting and beautifying our Reutlinger Community.While we continue to affirm life and the individualized attention of each and every one of our residents, we stay true to our mission of supporting those whose financial resources have been diminished. In our 70 years of service to the community, no one seeking housing, care or services within The Reutlinger Community has ever been asked to leave due to an inability to pay. The Resident Assistance Fund has supported Holocaust survivors, Jewish families and Jewish residents to ensure a dignified and comfortable level of care on our campus.We are also proud to announce two wonderful additions to our campus, due the generosity of the Ilse Schiff Trust, and our

supporters. We are opening our beautiful in-home Movie Theater, complete with the very finest equipment for visual and sound enjoyment, extra comfortable theater seats, and fresh popcorn! This opportunity will enable endless hours of movie pleasure for everyone. In addition, we are creating the Deborah L. Lind Memorial Garden, to provide the possibility of resident’s gardening themselves, in a special area of raised beds and lovely garden pathways. We can’t do any of our financial support for residents and campus improvements without you and the generosity of our dedicated and loyal donors. Please consider a donation to the Reutlinger Resident Assistance Fund. Doing so will support the funds we must raise each year for residents who have outlived their own financial capability. Let’s insure our budding senior artists, movie goers and gardeners, and any other residents in need, are able to continue to enjoy life, and express themselves creatively without fear and the uncertainty of financial pressures, beyond their ability to control or remedy. SKY LOOKING OVERWATER, GRASS AND WIND: 2019, Colored Pencil on Paper, 12" x 9"

This is my second wild sea grass painting. I like that these sea grasses are growing in different directions and doing their own thing! Watching the ocean has always been a fascination; I also have a a healthy fear of the power it has.

I am amazed at doing this painting. I ask myself, ‘Did I do that?’ and I feel proud. It’s different! I like the greens, the blues and whites underneath. I get the feeling I could look and look at this and not get tired of it! It makes me smile…

IN FLIGHT: 2019, Watercolor/Marker on Paper, 15" x 11"

One day in the art room, I was looking at a book on butterflies and saw some of the wings had been photographed under a microscope. The colors were so beautiful they inspired me to fly! These miraculous wings also inspired a series I have been working on for over a year- on flight!

In this painting “In Flight,” I see butterflies taking off in the sky-at night in the darkness. When I make these brushstrokes, the movement of my arm feels like flying! The paint is shimmering like the movement of their wings. For me, it’s all about color and movement. When I create something I like, it makes me happy.

“You Can Move Mountains” is an inside joke evoking laughter and change in our art studio! Resident artists quickly learn that with one stroke of a pencil or eraser, whole mountain ranges can appear…or disappear! In response to an attitude of “I can’t,” it reminds us of the power we have in our fingertips, mind and imagination to forge something new and to let go of obstacles such as negative beliefs.

Stepping into a creative, experimental space is magical…TIME begins to disappear…the paper becomes an open SPACE…one drops deeper from head to heart and body with a different energy

- received and sent….not by hearing or speaking words…but seeing and feeling - light, color, shapes and images. Something exciting is about to appear on the field! Color is on the tip of a brush you are holding; YOU guide it, learning how to steer…and suddenly something appears that you (and others) have never seen before.

A synopsis of a magical moment: the unfolding of Creation. We become so used to it, we forget we’ve created friendships, families, beauty in our homes, gardens, vessels to cook and serve the meals we make. Organizations appear that serve lives and we generate moments of loving kindness and generosity, anger and challenge and allow ourselves to find pure joy. We are co-creators with our Source, of our attitudes and our lives-with daily opportunities for design, response, intent and skill.

With life, we have the natural ability to create. All kids are gifted with that at birth, love it, and use it wildly. It’s always there…waiting to blossom with a little courage, willingness, focus and care. In our art studio, with gifts we have been given, we can move mountains…

When I was a kid, my first experience in a synagogue was being in the upstairs sanctuary of a house in Ohio. Over the years, I have been a member in synagogues in Ohio, Vegas, Walnut Creek, and Danville and have visited them all over the world in my travels and in books.

One day, it came to me that I’ve never heard of a synagogue in the forest! So, I thought, what if I create one? I would certainly like to go, and I think others would also, whether reform, conservative or orthodox.

More and more I dreamt of this synagogue, “Beit Or: House of Light” and now I have the artistic tools to create it! It makes me feel good that I can make this, visit it and share it with the world!

COMMUNITY SUKKOT: 2012, Digital Photograph on Paper, 7" x 5"

From the time I can remember, I have been interested in taking pictures. Looking at photos brings back precious moments of our lives and enables us to share them with new generations. I began documenting the residents, families and events at TRC with my arrival in 2012. I am most interested in capturing how we celebrate the days of our lives through holidays, family visits, lectures, concerts, artwork and food!

This photo from our Sukkah portrays the comfort of belonging, being together and celebrating Jewishly. Using my computer, I email residents, the families and staff these photos of people enjoying life and being safe and well cared for.

The advent of digital cameras and computers allowed me the freedom to document life and has become my passion. My camera is with me at all times…because you never know!

CHAPEL OF LOVE, BRIDAL VEIL FALLS, YOSEMITE: 2019, Graphite/Acrylic on Paper, 17" x 14"

We were inspired to paint this picture after my first trip to Yosemite National Park in 2018. Ofelia said it was like heaven to be there in the middle of nature, so we went on an adventure! Making this painting—and now, viewing it—we recall being in this wonder-filled place, surrounded by trees, waterfalls, lakes and meadows.

Creating “Chapel of Love, Bridal Falls” was exciting and also the most challenging image we have attempted. The contrasts of textures, warm and cool colors and light and shadow made a dramatic impact and drew us in. If you haven’t been to Yosemite, we hope this painting will entice you to want to visit! Meanwhile, maybe in your imagination, this painting will take you there!

Her troupe mates look on with admiration at her skill, and are tinged with envy at her position in the spotlight.They are also hopeful for their own future success knowing the work and effort required to achieve that kind of joy in the dance and the artistic success it brings.They have to dance because it’s a gift they’ve been given. As artists, they feel a responsibility to develop their G-d given gift.

FOG ON THE MOUNTAINSIDE: 2019, Graphite/Watercolor on Paper, 14" x 17"

I began “Fog on the Mountainside” last November, but ran into a medical problem which took me away from working for several months. It was much harder to start up again, since the skills I had learned were no longer fresh in my mind. However, with time, practice and patience, I regained my ability to follow the process, interpret the colors and do what I set out to do.

Originally, I was very attracted to the subtlety and softness of the colors in this scene. I liked the mix of blues, grays and yellow nearby in the sky and in the reflections. After finding a title for the painting, I more clearly realized its true subject. I went back into it and emphasized the fog with paint and water. I accomplished painting this picture as I envisioned it!

Each person puts themselves inside their painting and tells us about what’s in the world. Sometimes you see the world in a different way, and it makes you see a different world! What is important is to wake up in the morning and ask,”what is the world like? What am I seeing?”“The World Wants to See the Beauty That is There” shows the world has a lot of color in it. This is my idea of the world as it is. People have thoughts, shapes and colors in their mind; and, we can gain from it. There is a lot to say in the world and we have to look at all of it. This is our world - we need to love it and support it.

“Forest Spring” broadened my perspective of distances. Through painting the faint mist of the background, the solidness of the cliffs in the middle ground, and high contrasts of the forest in the foreground, I created the illusion of space!

After painting this, the brightness and the colors reminded me of springtime.

CARNIVAL IN RED: 2019, Watercolor on Paper, 9” x 12"

“Carnival in Red” is taking place at a park and there are two ferris wheels going around. When I was a child, carnivals came to our town with ferris wheels, roller coasters and merry-go-rounds and I was allowed to ride these three or four times each! My family packed a picnic of potato salad, baked fish, sliced peaches and punch; I also ate 3 dishes of ice-cream!!!!Red makes me so happy- I have loved it since I was a child. I had a red dress I wanted to wear every single day; I couldn’t talk my mom into that! I wondered why my mother didn’t have a red kitchen. Later, I had many things red in my own kitchen and now get to paint in RED.

I am a man of faith.

I have learned the technique of painting late in my life through much guidance. I never expected to learn to draw and paint such beauty in G-d’s creation for generations to admire! I did it for people to enjoy.

When I start the day and look at the sky and see the beauty of heavenly creation, I open my eyes with life and happiness. Love, peace on earth, G-d bless you always and forever. Amen.

STARLIGHT, STARBRIGHT: 2019, Graphite/Watercolor/Acrylic Pen on Paper, 12" x 18"

The heavenly body seen in this painting is part of our solar system! Since the beginning of human history and before, It has provided us with a form of starlight in our late afternoons. “Starlight, Starbright” is in primitive Yosemite, probably a thousand years ago. This was the home of Native Americans, who practiced conserving the land. They revered nature as holy. This is a practical approach to (conserving) our place in the universe.

I have traveled in Africa, Indonesia, Vietnam, Europe, and the Middle East on bikes and boats, and hiked in the Himalayas in Nepal, and in South America. All these experiences inform my painting, and come to me in flashes of memory.

I attended California College of Arts and Crafts for one year in drawing and CAL in painting. I picked up painting again about six years ago, studying with a group in oil.

This is my first watercolor; I like the sensation of the water floating across the paper. I also find the darks and lights dimensional and the experience calming. “Antique Waterlilies” expresses calmness in a gentle river.

On a Kenyan Safari, we saw hundreds of animals: elephants, lions, giraffes, baboons, zebras, hippos, and rhinoceros. I photographed this cheetah when she jumped onto our tour bus! Curious, she first put her paw out, then her head inside the bus, and I captured her up close with my camera!

This woodcarving was developed from a drawing I made using my photo. I’ve been woodcarving about eighteen years; the idea of using paint is relatively new. In “Focused Intention,” I find the color brings out her true appearance. I was inspired to do this piece for the favor I had in seeing her.

MULTI-DIMENSIONAL: 2019, Watercolor/Mixed Media on Paper, 20" x 14"

I spent time at Crown Beach and South Shore in Alameda as a teenager. Later, my wife Vivian and I went tide pooling in Half Moon Bay and snorkeling in Monterey, Hawaii and Cancun. It was in these experiences I saw both the diversity of colors and the power of the ocean (represented as the blue line!). I would encourage people to do this!

Vivian and I started ‘Multidimensional’ with one of my favorite colors -blue. We identified it as water; then, we built the painting layer by layer.
