September 2019 Year Overview Congratulations, You survived your first year of high school. Now it’s time to get back in the game and come up with a plan to make this year memorable. Here are a few things to consider as you start your sophomore year. Each month we will be providing tips and information to help you be successful. Attendance It is critical (very important) to attend class. Don’t fall behind. You need 5 credits every trimester. How can you pass if you don't come to class?! Extra-Curricular Activities- (October 21) Get Involved! Clubs, sports, volunteering, interning, etc. Make connections and make healthy friendships with others who share similar interests. Internships At WHSAT, students have multiple ways to obtain paid and unpaid internships. Code Nation Internship- ALL 10th graders are encouraged to enroll in our Code Nation Course. A group of expert programmers volunteer to teach you the art of coding. You get to go on trips and compete with other schools and win prizes. At the end of the course you may sign up for a PAID Code Nation Internship and attend classes at their locations. CTE ISP Internship- Students that took and continue to take Computer Science may enroll for a paid intern- ship opportunity. No coding expertise required. Students must be willing to at least work for a company that utilizes technol- ogy and what company doesn’t these days. Ask Ms. Argueta for the application SYEP /Ladders to Leaders- If you already had an SYEP experience make sure to ask St. Nicks for the Ladders to Leaders Application. Have all your documentation ready by February if you are planning on enroll- ing for a Summer Youth Employment at the end of the school year. Regents- (January 21-27) These exams are very important for graduation and college admission. You need 5 passed regents to graduate. But, to prevent wasting your time and money on remedial classes in college, make sure you are college ready 75 ELA & 80 Math Regents = College Ready • +1 Options: For anyone that struggled to pass one of their history regents and took that exam at least twice. The state is allowing students to replace their +1 exam with a Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) portfolio. You must be enrolled in a computer science course and have at least 60 hours of internship experience. By the time you graduate, you should have 216 hours of computer science/internship hours. It is still required to take both US and Global. In addition, you MUST pass at least ONE history exam towards graduation. AP Courses Take an AP class as a sophomore! These courses contain college level curriculum and your AP exam score could gain you FREE college credits. • Students with a 75+ Living Environment regents score are to take AP Bio • Students will be encouraged to take AP English this year to be well equipped for college rigor College Now Consider taking College Now courses next year. You could leave WHSAT with FREE college credits. These isn't any standardized exam for most of these classes and you can get a college ID with many benefits. PSAT/SAT (March 4th) Start test prepping for the PSAT to score well on the SAT in junior year. ALL sophomores will be scheduled for FREE to take the PSAT. Math and English teachers can provide you with PSAT prep materials. College Board Create your account or reset password. This website is the perfect place to begin your SAT prep utilizing Khan Academy. In addition, it is never too soon to begin researching colleges, creating your college lists and searching for scholarships. https://www.collegeboard.org/

Congratulations, You survived your first year of high school. Now it’s time to get back in the game and come up with a plan to make this year memorable. Here are a few things to consider as you start your sophomore year. Each month we will be providing tips and information to help you be successful.

AttendanceIt is critical (very important) to attend class. Don’t fall behind. You need 5 credits every trimester. How can you pass if you don't come to class?!

Felicitaciones, sobreviviste a tu primer año de secundaria. Ahora es el momento de volver al juego y elaborar un plan para que este año sea memorable. Aquí hay algunas cosas a tener en cuenta al comenzar su segundo año. Cada mes le proporcionaremos consejos e información para ayudarlo a tener éxito.

AsistenciaEs crítico (muy importante) asistir a clase. No te quedes atrás. Necesitas 5 créditos cada trimestre. ¿Cómo puedes pasar si no vienes a clase?

Actividades extracurriculares (21 de octubre)¡Involucrarse! Clubes, deportes, voluntariado, prácticas, etc. Haga conexiones y haga amistades saludables con otras personas que comparten intereses similares.

PasantíasEn nuestra escuela, los estudiantes tienen múltiples formas de obtener pasantías remuneradas y no remunera-das.

• Pasantía Código Nación- Se alienta a TODOS los alumnos de 10º grado a inscribirse en nuestro Curso de Código Nación. Un grupo de programadores expertos se ofrece como voluntario para enseñarle el arte de la codificación. Tienes la oportunidad de ir de viaje y competir con otras escuelas y ganar premios. Al final del curso, puede inscribirse en una Pasantía de Código Nación PAGADA y asistir a clases en sus ubicaciones.

• Pasantía CTE ISP - Los estudiantes que tomaron y continúan tomando Ciencias de la Computación pueden inscribirse para una oportunidad de pasantía remunerada.No se requiere experiencia en codificación. Los estudiantes deben estar dispuestos a trabajar al menos para una empre-sa que utiliza tecnología y en qué empresa no lo hace en estos días.Pídale a la Sra. Argueta la solicitud. • SYEP /Ladders to Leaders- Si ya tuvo una experiencia SYEP, asegúrese de pedirle a St. Nicks la Solicitud de Ladders to Leaders. Tenga toda su documentación lista para febrero si planea inscribirse para un Empleo Juvenil de Verano al final del año escolar.

Regentes (21-27 de enero)Estos exámenes son muy importantes para la graduación y la admisión a la universidad. Necesitas 5 regentes aprobados para graduarte. Pero, para evitar perder su tiempo y dinero en clases de recuperación en la universi-dad, asegúrese de estar listo para la universidad

75 ELA y 80 Regentes de Matemáticas = Preparados para la Universidad• Opciones de +1: para cualquiera que haya tenido dificultades para aprobar uno de sus regentes de historia y haya realizado ese examen al menos dos veces. El estado está permitiendo que los estudiantes reemplacen su examen +1 con un portafolio de Desarrollo de Carrera y Estudios Ocupacionales (CDOS). Debe estar inscrito en un curso de informática y tener al menos 60 horas de experiencia en prácticas. Para cuando te gradúes, deberías tener 216 horas de informática / pasantías. Todavía se requiere tomar tanto EE. UU. Como Global. Además, DEBE aprobar al menos UN examen de historia para graduarse.

Cursos AP¡Toma una clase AP como estudiante de segundo año! Estos cursos contienen un plan de estudios de nivel univer-sitario y su puntaje en el examen AP podría obtener créditos universitarios GRATUITOS.

• Los estudiantes con un 75+ regentes medio ambiente y vida son anotar a tomar la AP Bio• Se alentará a los estudiantes a tomar AP Inglés este año para estar bien equipados para el rigor universitario

College NowConsidera tomar cursos de College Now el próximo año. Podrías dejar WHSAT con créditos universitarios GRATIS. No hay ningún examen estandarizado para la mayoría de estas clases y puede obtener una identificación univer-sitaria con muchos beneficios.
