Rabbi’s Message Dennis Ross
For the High Holidays: A Moral Dilemma If you've ever kept to your left to run up an escalator to save a few seconds, "experts," according to the New York Times, say that you are seizing an advantage at the expense of others. Riding an escalator two by two – standing side by side – is, on the whole, faster for all. In an experiment on the London Underground, with 40 percent of passengers walking up an escalator and 60 percent standing, the average time for standers was 138 seconds, and 46 seconds for walkers – including ride time and wait time to board the escalator. When everyone stood, the average time fell to 59 seconds, meaning walkers lost 13 seconds and standers got a 79-second improvement. So here's the moral dilemma: Should I stand on the escalator instead of walking? Standing means it would take me longer to get to the top – or bottom – but my sacrifice would serve the greater public good, as everyone would, on average, arrive faster if I stayed in place. In terms of what most people might do, one of the expert researchers said, "I am not too optimistic that people's sense of altruism can override their sense of urgency and immediacy," said one. "Self-interest dominates our behavior," said another. As for me, I have to say I’m less concerned about the “time-saving” and more concerned about the morals, especially given the negativity coming from those expert opinions. After all, getting home 13 seconds earlier won’t make much difference in most of our lives. But there are times when we may decide to put the public interest ahead of our own, because bringing a greater good to the larger numbers carries a higher moral demand. The High Holidays call us to think of ourselves -- in relation to others. It is a time to consider the ways our behavior impacts the people around us. And when we don't like what we see, these days call us to teushuva, to return to the good and the right. Wishing you and loved ones a sweet start to 5779!I look forward to a time of sharing! High Holidays Cantor Betsey Peters - Epstein
Shalom from the Cantor Emerita from Temple Sholom of West Essex. I served at Temple Sholom of West Essex for almost 16 years. I was ordained in 1989 at Hebrew Union College Seminary in New York. I actually worked with Rabbi Ross in Pittsfield for a year in the early 90s so I was really interested when I was persuing the High Holiday listing in the American Conference of Cantors placement list. I came up for an interview in the spring and was greeted warmly by the committee and I was thrilled when they expressed their desire to engage me. The first thing I asked for was the music compilation for the High Holy Days. I was happy to see so much of the music I have done at my Temple and at the two High Holy Day positions I have had since retiring. One was in Fort Meyers, FL and the other in Indianapolis. I work hard to meet the needs of the community I serve. I want to preserve their musical traditions with familiar melodies and to sing in a key low enough so that they can participate. I bring in a few of my High Holiday favorites also. I have been working with Erin Cross via phone meetings to get everything arranged. She has also been a delight and I look forward to working with her in person in September. I live in New York City with my husband Daniel Epstein who is a pianist. David teaches at the Manhattan School of Music and Rutgers where he is head of Keyboard Studies. He still actively performs with orchestra and chamber music. We usually do several performances a year together. I have two married daughters in Los Angeles. We usually meet up in Orland Maine where I spend my summers now that I am retired. I look forward to meeting you all as we greet the Jewish New Year in September. High Holidays Cantor Betsey Peters-Epstein

best place it could possibly be for our students.” Laura is just as excited as Marilyn. She says, “I’m looking forward to
working with Marilyn who has a fresh outlook. She brings years of

Early Temple Services during the summer were well attended. We will be
starting to have EARLY SERVICE EVERY 4TH FRIDAY OF THE MONTH beginning
Friday on September 28. Watch for notifications as to Pre-neg and Service
Start Times.
We will resume First Friday Hallelu services in October. Also, on First Fridays,
we will be offering a 6:15 pm Tot Shabbat service. The Tot Shabbat will begin
in October on Friday, October 5.
This year during the High Holy Day services, we are trying some new things:
1. After Shachrit Service of Day One, Rosh Hashanah, we will have apples and
honey, challah and water in the Social Hall before we gather and walk to
the pond for Tachlich.
2. Instead of the discussion period on Yom Kippur, we will have the Sanctuary
open for rest, quiet meditation and reflection during this time.
